Separate source-channel coding for Transmitting Correlated Gaussian sources Over Degraded Broadcast channels

The problem of transmitting a pair of correlated Gaussian sources over degraded broadcast channels using optimal separate source and channel codes is studied. Upper bounds are derived for the rate penalty (in terms of channel uses per source symbol) and the power loss endured by separate coding compared to joint coding. Although source-channel separation is suboptimal in general, it is demonstrated that the performance of separate coding comes close to that of optimal joint coding, especially for low distortion pairs. In fact, in some cases, separate coding performs better than the best known joint schemes so far. It is also shown analytically that separate coding is optimal when either of the sources is to be reconstructed in a near-lossless fashion.

We propose an adaptive lossy joint source-channel coding (JSCC) scheme for sending correlated sources over two-terminal discrete-memoryless two-way channels (DM-TWCs). The main idea is to couple the independent operations of the terminals via an adaptive coding mechanism, which can mitigate cross-interference resulting from simultaneous channel transmissions and concurrently exploit the sources' correlation to reduce the end-to-end reconstruction distortions. Our adaptive JSCC scheme not only subsumes existing lossy coding methods for two-way simultaneous communication but also improves their performance. Furthermore, we derive outer bounds for our two-way lossy transmission problem and establish complete JSCC theorems in some special settings. In these special cases, a non-adaptive separate source-channel coding (SSCC) scheme achieves the optimal performance, thus simplifying the design of the source-channel communication system.

On Robustness of Hybrid Digital/Analog source-channel coding With Bandwidth Mismatch

For transmission of memoryless Gaussian sources over channels with additive white Gaussian noise, the tradeoff between the distortion when the channel quality is good versus bad is investigated under the constraint that the distortion is optimal when the channel has the targeted median quality. The problem was proposed by Tian and Shamai, who subsequently proved remarkable achievability results for bandwidth expansion ratios kappa, which are integers or unit fractions, i.e., kappa = 2, 3, 4, ... or kappa = 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, ... Their result is extended here to all kappa >= 2 and kappa <= 1/2 by generalizing the hybrid digital/analog (HDA) scheme of Wilson et al. to the case of bandwidth mismatch. Finally, novel schemes are proposed for 1/2 <= kappa < 1 and 1 < kappa <= 2 achieving nontrivial tradeoffs outperforming all known schemes. These latter schemes rely on another extension of the HDA scheme by Wilson et al., namely, the relaxation of the independence of source and channel input sequences.

TTCM-Aided Rate-Adaptive Distributed source coding for Rayleigh Fading channels

Adaptive turbo-trellis-coded modulation (TTCM)-aided asymmetric distributed source coding (DSC) is proposed, where two correlated sources are transmitted to a destination node. The first source sequence is TTCM encoded and is further compressed before it is transmitted through a Rayleigh fading channel, whereas the second source signal is assumed to be perfectly decoded and, hence, to be flawlessly shown at the destination for exploitation as side information for improving the decoding performance of the first source. The proposed scheme is capable of reliable communications within 0.80 dB of the Slepian-Wolf/Shannon (SW/S) theoretical limit at a bit error rate (BER) of 10(-5). Furthermore, its encoder is capable of accommodating time-variant short-term correlation between the two sources.

Multiple description coding of scalable video stream based on unequal loss protection and optimal rate allocation

Forward Error Correction (FEC) codes may be used to protect a video code stream against packet erasures or errors when passing through an error-prone network. To have maximum possible fidelity at the decoder side, an Unequal Loss Protection (ULP) approach should be used to packetize the scalable video code stream, so that the different parts of the scalable video stream are protected according to their importance. Unequal loss-protected packetization leads to segmentation of the scalable code stream, such that the source can be reconstructed with the maximum possible fidelity at the decoder side. In Ardestani et al. (2009) [1] we have found an analytical relation between the optimal sizes of any two consecutive segments. This idea yields an efficient (as efficient as the local search algorithm in Stankovic et al. (2002) [2]) low-complexity progressive solution for the segmentation problem. In this paper, we use a progressive approach for ULP packetization of a scalable video stream generated from a T + 2D encoder. In addition, an optimal rate allocation is used for optimal rate budget division between successive Groups Of Pictures (GOPs) of the video sequence. The experimental results demonstrate that the optimal rate budget allocation outperforms the conventional strategy of equal rate budget distribution up to 0.65 dB. Nonlinear Transform source-channel coding for Semantic Communications

In this paper, we propose a class of high-efficiency deep joint source-channel coding methods that can closely adapt to the source distribution under the nonlinear transform, it can be collected under the name nonlinear transform source-channel coding (NTSCC). In the considered model, the transmitter first learns a nonlinear analysis transform to map the source data into latent space, then transmits the latent representation to the receiver via deep joint source-channel coding. Our model incorporates the nonlinear transform as a strong prior to effectively extract the source semantic features and provide side information for source-channel coding. Unlike existing conventional deep joint source-channel coding methods, the proposed NTSCC essentially learns both the source latent representation and an entropy model as the prior on the latent representation. Accordingly, novel adaptive rate transmission and hyperprior-aided codec refinement mechanisms are developed to upgrade deep joint source-channel coding. The whole system design is formulated as an optimization problem whose goal is to minimize the end-to-end transmission rate-distortion performance under established perceptual quality metrics. Across test image sources with various resolutions, we find that the proposed NTSCC transmission method generally outperforms both the analog transmission using the standard deep joint source-channel coding and the classical separation-based digital transmission. Notably, the proposed NTSCC method can potentially support future semantic communications due to its content-aware ability and perceptual optimization goal.

Quality enhancement of printed-and-scanned images using distributed coding

In this paper we address visual communications via print-and-scan channels from an information-theoretic point of view as communications with side information that targets quality enhancement of visual data at the output of this type of channels. The solution to this problem addresses important aspects of multimedia data processing and management. A practical approach to side information communications for printed documents based on Wyner-Ziv and Gray setups is analyzed in the paper that assumes two separated communications channels where an appropriate distributed coding should be elaborated. The printing channel is considered to be a direct visual channel for images ("analog" channel with degradations). The "digital channel" is considered to be an appropriate auxiliary channel exploited to communicate the information exploited for quality enhancement of printed-and-scanned image. We demonstrate both theoretically and practically how one can benefit from this sort of "distributed paper communications". (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Optimal and suboptimal channel precoding and decoding matrices for linear video coding

Linear video coding (LVC) has recently emerged as a very promising paradigm for robust video delivery over unreliable channels. The pioneering LVC paper, introducing SoftCast, showed that, a cross-layer approach, based on linear-only processing followed by analog modulation, was able to improve the quality of received video with respect to traditional, layered approaches, when unreliable links to several users are considered. This paper considers the power allocation problem when the transmission channel consists of several sub-channels, each with its own power constraint. This framework models, e.g., multi-antenna, DSL, or powerline transmission systems. Minimizing the mean-square error at a receiver leads to an precoding and decoding matrix design problem. Our contributions consist in (1) formulating the matrix design problem in such a way that a multi-level water-filling solution proposed for MIMO channels can be adapted to LVC;(2) the proposal of three suboptimal power allocations techniques, with different trade-offs between complexity and efficiency;(3) a precoding matrix design for the multiple receivers scenario;(4) extensive simulations of the power allocation methods. The proposed optimal power allocation largely outperforms a simple adaptation of the allocation considered in SoftCast for the per-subchannel power constrained problem;moreover two of the suboptimal solutions perform very close to the optimal one, with a sensibly reduced complexity.

The Rate-Distortion-Perception-Classification Tradeoff: joint source coding and Modulation via Inverse-Domain GANs

The joint source-channel coding (JSCC) framework leverages deep learning to learn from data the best codes for source and channel coding. When the output signal, rather than being binary, is directly mapped onto the IQ domain (complex-valued), we call the resulting framework joint source coding and modulation (JSCM). We consider a JSCM scenario and show the existence of a strict tradeoff between channel rate, distortion, perception, and classification accuracy, a tradeoff that we name RDPC. We then propose two image compression methods to navigate that tradeoff: the RDPCO algorithm which, under simple assumptions, directly solves the optimization problem characterizing the tradeoff, and an algorithm based on an inverse-domain generative adversarial network (ID-GAN), which is more general and achieves extreme compression. Simulation results corroborate the theoretical findings, showing that both algorithms exhibit the RDPC tradeoff. They also demonstrate that the proposed ID-GAN algorithm effectively balances image distortion, perception, and classification accuracy, and significantly outperforms traditional separation-based methods and recent deep JSCM architectures in terms of one or more of these metrics.

The duality between information embedding and source coding with side information and some applications

Aspects of the duality between the information-embedding problem and the Wyner-Ziv problem of source coding with side information at the decoder are developed and used to establish a spectrum new results on these and related problems, with implications for a number of important applications. The single-letter characterization of the information-embedding problem is developed and related to the corresponding characterization of the Wyner-Ziv problem, both of which correspond to optimization of a common mutual information difference. Dual variables and dual Markov conditions are identified, along with the dual role of noise and distortion in the two problem's. For a Gaussian context with quadratic distortion metric, a geometric interpretation of the duality is, developed. From such insights, we develop a capacity-achieving information-embedding system based on nested lattices. We show the resulting encoder-decoder has precisely the same decoder-encoder structure as the corresponding Wyner-Ziv system based on nested lattices that achieves the rate-distortion limit. For a binary context with Hamming distortion metric, the information-embedding capacity is developed, along with its relationship to the corresponding Wyner-Ziv rate-distortion function. In turn, an information-embedding system for this case based on nested, linear codes is constructed having an encoder-decoder that is identical to the decoder-encoder structure for the corresponding system that achieves the Wyner-Ziv rate-distortion limit. Finally, based on these results, a simple layered joint source-channel coding system is developed with a perfectly symmetric encoder-decoder structure. Its application and performance is discussed in a broadcast setting in which there is a need to control the fidelity experienced by different receivers.
