Several embedded video coding schemes have been recently developed for multimedia streaming over IP. In particular, Fine-Granular -Scalability, (FGS) video coding has been recently adopted by the MPEG-4 standard as the core video-compression method for streaming applications. From its inception, the FGS scalability, structure was designed to be packet-loss resilient especially under Unequal Packet-loss Protection (UPP). In this paper we introduce the notion of Fine Grained Loss Protection (FGLP), which provides UPP within the FGS enhancement-layer, and we develop an analytical framework for evaluating FGLP bounds. Based on these bounds, we show the impact of applying fine-grained protection to the FGS enhancement-layer for different types of video sequences and over a wide range of bit-rates and packet-loss ratios. Subsequently the FGLP framework has been implemented using forward error correction codes and its performance for Internet video streaming has been evaluated. As illustrated by our extensive simulation results, fine-grained loss protection for the FGS enhancement-layer can provide significant resilience under moderate-to-high packet-loss ratios (e.g. 5-10%).

The energy-distortion tradeoff for the transmission of a white Gaussian source over the additive white Gaussian broadcast channel is investigated by translating the known upper and lower bounds into the infinite bandwidth regime. While a gap continues to exist between the bounds in this regime, it is shown that in a certain region on the distortion plane, the energy difference between the best known upper and lower bounds is quantifiably small.

This paper is concerned with the strategic quantization setting where the encoder and the decoder have misaligned objectives and communicate over a noisy channel, extending the work on classical channel-optimized quantization. This problem without the quantization constraint has been well-studied under the theme of information design problems in Economics. It is more appealing and relevant to engineering applications with a constraint on the cardinality of the message space. We consider a scalar source X and develop a gradient-descent based solution in conjunction with random index assignment, which has been used in prior literature on classical channel-optimized quantizaton. In our prior work, we used dynamic programming for this problem. Here, we employ gradient descent to reduce the complexity of the algorithm. We finally present numerical results obtained via the proposed algorithm that suggest its validity and demonstrate the strategic quantization features that differentiate it from its classical counterpart. In this paper, a joint source channel coding scheme for error resilient image transmission is proposed. Instead of compressing the image using the classical entropy coder, the redundancy of the image is exploited by using turbo codes for both data compression and error protection. At the decoder, the bit-planes are reconstructed in sequence by a multistage decoder. By properly choosing rate and puncturing, the system is able to approach the limit theoretically attainable and to outperform the separated approach of a JPEG2000 compressed image and the best turbo codes for the same overall length.

SoftCast-based linear video coding and transmission (LVCT) schemes have been proposed as a promising alternative to traditional video coding and transmission schemes in wireless environments. Currently, the performance of LVCT schemes is evaluated by means of traditional objective scores such as PSNR or SSIM. Nevertheless, since the compression is performed in a very different way from traditional coding schemes such as HEVC, visual artifacts are also quite different and deserve to be subjectively assessed. In this paper, we propose a subjective quality assessment of SoftCast, pioneer and standard of the LVCT schemes. This study aims to better understand the trade-offs between the LVCT parameters that can be tuned to improve the quality. These parameters, including different GoP-sizes, Compression Ratios (CR) and channel Signal-to-Noise Ratio (CSNR), are used to generate a dataset of 85 videos. A Double Stimulus Impairment Scale (DSIS) test is performed on the received videos to assess the perceived quality. Results show that the key characteristic of SoftCast, the linear relation between CSNR and PSNR, is also observed with the Mean-Opinion Scores (MOS), except at high CSNR where the quality saturates. In addition, Bjpntegaard model is used to quantify the trade-offs between CR, GoP-size and CSNR, depending on the intended application. Finally, the performance of objective metrics compared to the obtained MOS is evaluated. Results show that Multi-Scale SSIM (MS-SSIM), SSIM and Video Multimethod Assessment Fusion (VMAF) metrics offer the best correlation with the MOS values.

FGS (Fine Granularity Scalability) is a scalable coding technique which can provide flexibility and good performance for Internet video streaming. However. FGS is not suitable for wireless video streaming. This is mainly because the low coding efficiency of FGS does not fit the limited bandwidth of wireless networks. In this paper, we jointly consider mode selection and UEP (unequal error protection) for FGS video transmission over wireless channels. In particular, we provide two modes for encoding the FGS enhancement layer of each video frame, i.e., with prediction or without prediction. The mode selection depends on the capability of UEP while the solution for UEP depends on the vulnerability of source data. We construct an overall end-to-end rate-distortion (R-D) function. Based on this end-to-end R-D function, we are able to find the optimal solutions for both mode selection and UEP so that an optimal tradeoff between efficiency and robustness can be achieved. Experimental results demonstrate the proposed system is able to significantly improve the end-to-end video quality for wireless FGS video coding, and transmission.

We consider analog multiple description joint source-channel schemes for the transmission of a Gaussian source over two independent AWGN parallel channels under a quadratic error distortion criteria. For such systems, Lines mapping was proved to be a simple and efficient mapping when MMSE decoding is used. However, MMSE decoding presents a high computational load. In order to reduce complexity of such schemes, this paper studies the suitability of replacing the MMSE decoders by the much simpler ML decoders. The scenario where the ML decoders have some additional side information (Wyner-Ziv scenario) is also analyzed. Their performances are compared with the corresponding theoretical bound and with the obtained simulation results of their MMSE counterparts.

Fine-Granularity-Scalability (FGS) has recently been adopted as the MPEG-4 standard for the efficient and flexible distribution of multimedia over the Internet. The FGS framework allows spatio-temporal-SNR tradeoffs in real-time (not limited to encoding time) at transmission or (post-) processing time, depending upon the available bit-rate, sequence characteristics, priority, user preferences or receiver resources. This paper discusses the versatility of FGS and how it can be used to great advantage in a variety of application domains beyond Internet video streaming, such as robust wireless video transmission and flexible scalable storage. In particular, the focus is on investigating the use of FGS for enabling the Universal Media Access (UMA) paradigm for wireless networks. To cope with detrimental channel conditions, we use several joint source-channel coding schemes for wireless transmission, termed Robust FGS (RFGS). RFGS exploits the FGS property of compressing video data in a set of multi-priority streams, based on the channel characteristics and terminal capabilities, by adapting the channel coding. Our results show that RFGS can provide graceful adaptability to varying network conditions while also offering additional benefits such as flexible Quality-of Service (QoS) management and channel adaptation and allocation. Moreover, the use of FGS for scalable storage of video content in gateways and in-home centralized storage units is also investigated. The results show that the proposed scalable method allows storing ten times or more video data on the same storage device depending on the desired guaranteed minimum quality level.

In this paper we consider the problem of faded wireless image and video transmission schemes under energy transmission constraints. An example of such a constrained system experiencing Rayleigh fading is Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) where power control is used. We imposed on the average energy transmitted per an image or image sequence. A computationally inexpensive analytic mean square error (MSE) distortion rate (D-R) estimator for progressive wavelet coders which generates an exact distortion rate (D-R) function for 2-D and 3-D SPIHT algorithm is utilized from our previous research. Using the D-R function, the expected mean square error(MSE) at the receiver is minimized by optimally assigning the energy and parity allocation per each transmission block among the packets. A gain of 1.09 dB relative to optimal equal error protection (EEP) is obtained by varying both energy and parity among the transmission blocks. The results can be used to to increase image and video quality in CDMA systems.

State-of-the-art performance for many emerging edge applications is achieved by deep neural networks (DNNs). Often, the employed DNNs are location- and time-dependent, and the parameters of a specific DNN must be delivered from an edge server to the edge device rapidly and efficiently to carry out time-sensitive inference tasks. This can be considered as a joint source-channel coding (JSCC) problem, in which the goal is not to recover the DNN coefficients with the minimal distortion, but in a manner that provides the highest accuracy in the downstream task. For this purpose we introduce AirNet, a novel training and analog transmission method to deliver DNNs over the air. We first train the DNN with noise injection to counter the wireless channel noise. We also employ pruning to identify the most significant DNN parameters that can be delivered within the available channel bandwidth, knowledge distillation, and non-linear bandwidth expansion to provide better error protection for the most important network parameters. We show that AirNet achieves significantly higher test accuracy compared to the separation-based alternative, and exhibits graceful degradation with channel quality.
