Asymptotic energy-distortion performance of zero-delay communication under Gaussian broadcasting is investigated. The analysis can be motivated by the scenario where the same internet of things (IoT) device is transmitting its measurements to multiple control units that are experiencing varying noise levels. Using high-resolution analysis for quantizer design coupled with orthogonal signaling, the higher-order term in the negative logarithm of the distortion, termed the energy-distortion dispersion, is optimized while keeping the leading term, the energy-distortion exponent, at its optimal value for the zero-delay regime.

Sensor nodes in wireless sensor networks should preferable be both cheap and energy efficient. To cope with these requirements an algorithm for designing distributed scalar quantizers optimized for noisy channels is proposed and evaluated. Applying the algorithm results in locally optimal systems. It is demonstrated that the correlation between the sources can be used to reduce the quantization distortion when the channel is close to error-free. If, on the other hand, there are a lot of disturbances on the channel the correlation can be used to introduce protection against channel errors.

Recently, the joint source-channel coding schemes based on analog mappings have gained prominence. Their simplicity and low delay compared to other coding strategies make them more suitable for real-time applications. In this work, we propose a novel joint source-channel coding scheme, based also on analog mappings, for a point-to-point communication channel with side information at the receiver (also known as Wyner-Ziv scenario).

The aim of this paper is to present a robust still-image transmission scheme and show its performance when used on a frequency flat fading channel. By following a joint source-channel coding approach, it is shown that image transmission with good visual quality is possible even with BER as high as 4%. Furthermore, this scheme only requires 26% redundancy for Error Control coding (ECC). The ECC part can be completed by an original PDE-based restoration algorithm to further improve the visual quality of the image.

The goal of a class of sensor networks is to monitor an underlying physical reality at the highest possible fidelity. Sensors acquire noisy measurements and have to communicate them over a power- and possibly bandwidth-constrained interference channel to a set of base stations. The goal of this paper is to analyze, as a function of the number of sensors, the trade-offs between the degrees of freedom of the underlying physical reality, the communication resources (power, temporal and spatial bandwidth), and the resulting distortion at which the physical reality can be estimated by the base stations. The distortion can be expressed as the sum of two fundamentally different terms. The first term reflects the fact that the measurements are noisy. It depends on the number of sensors and on their locations, but it cannot be influenced by the communication resources. The second contribution to the distortion can be controlled by the communication resources, and the key question becomes: What resources are necessary to make it decay at least as fast as the first distortion term, as a function of the number of sensors? This question is answered threefold: First, a lower bound to the power-bandwidth trade-off is derived, showing that at least a constant to linearly increasing total power is required for typical cases (as a function of M). But is this also sufficient? In the second answer, communication strategies are considered where each sensor applies the best possible distributed compression algorithm, followed by capacity-achieving channel codes. For such a separation strategy, it is shown for typical cases that the power must increase exponentially as a function of the number of sensors, suggesting that the lower bound derived in this paper is far too optimistic. However, in the third answer, it is shown that this is not the case: For some example scenarios, the power requirements of the lower bound are indeed achievable, but joint source-channel coding is required. In this paper, minimum energy required to achieve a distortion-noise profile is studied for robust transmission of Gaussian sources over Gaussian channels when there is side information about the source at the receiver. The distortion-noise profile is a function indicating the maximum allowed distortion value for each channel noise level and side information quality, where neither are known at the transmitter. It is shown here that uncoded transmission is optimal for (inversely) linear profiles. Turning then to staircase profiles, a proposed coding scheme is studied to obtain an upper bound to the minimum energy needed. Conversely, a general family of lower bounds is derived for the minimum required energy and compared against the upper bound.

Networked embedded control systems are present almost everywhere. A recent trend is to introduce radio communication in these systems to increase mobility and flex- ibility. Network nodes, such as the sensors, are often simple devices with limited computing and transmission power and low storage capacity, so an important prob- lem concerns how to optimize the use of resources to provide sustained overall sys- tem performance. The approach to this problem taken in the thesis is to analyze and design the communication and control application layers in an integrated man- ner. We focus in particular on cross-layer design techniques for closed-loop control over non-ideal communication channels, motivated by future control systems with very low-rate and highly quantized sensor communication over noisy links. Several fundamental problems in the design of source–channel coding and optimal control for these systems are discussed. The thesis consists of three parts. The first and main part is devoted to the joint design of the coding and control for linear plants, whose state feedback is trans- mitted over a finite-rate noisy channel. The system performance is measured by a finite-horizon linear quadratic cost. We discuss equivalence and separation proper- ties of the system, and conclude that although certainty equivalence does not hold in general it can still be utilized, under certain conditions, to simplify the overall design by separating the estimation and the control problems. An iterative opti- mization algorithm for training the encoder–controller pairs, taking channel errors into account in the quantizer design, is proposed. Monte Carlo simulations demon- strate promising improvements in performance compared to traditional approaches. Reliable and efficient communication of analog observations over a fading multiple access channel (MAC) is important in wireless sensor networks. A sensor network can be well modelled by a set of correlated Gaussian sources communicating to a common receiver over a fading Gaussian MAC (GMAC). It is known that traditional separate source-channel (SSC) coding is sub-optimal when channel state information (CSI) is not available to the transmitters. For this case, neither the optimum performance theoretical achievable (OPTA) nor any practical coding schemes that can outperform traditional coding, remain known. This thesis investigates the minimum mean square error (MMSE) of communicating a pair of Gaussian sources over a bandwidth-matched GMAC with block Rayleigh fading (BF-GMAC) in the absence of transmitter CSI. We derive several upper-bounds to the MMSE as a function of transmitter powers, channel signal-to-noise ratio (CSNR), and the correlation coefficient of the two sources. To derive nontrivial upper bounds which improve on those of SSC coding and uncoded transmission, we incorporate ideas from joint source-channel coding and hybrid digital–analog (HDA) coding to construct coding schemes for which the achievable MMSE can be determined. One main contribution is two new MMSE upper bounds, which appear to be the best known characterizations of the OPTA to date. These bounds (JSC-VQ and HDA-JSC-VQ bounds) are derived by considering a transmission scheme where optimally vector quantized Gaussian sources are directly transmitted in analog form over the BF-GMAC. A comparison of these bounds with the MMSE bound for traditional SSC coding shows a gap that grows with source correlation and CSNR. Although there exists a gap even when the sources are uncorrelated, this gap is relatively small. It is shown that, for highly correlated sources and low average CSNR, uncoded transmission can achieve performance approaching the HDA-JSC-VQ bound. The difficulty of designing a pract

The basic tradeoff in lossy compression is that between the compression ratio (rate) and the fidelity of reproduction of the object that is compressed. Traditional (asymptotic) information theory seeks to describe the optimum tradeoff between rate and fidelity achievable in the limit of infinite length of the source block to be compressed. A perennial question in information theory is how relevant the asymptotic fundamental limits are when the communication system is forced to operate at a given fixed blocklength. The finite blocklength (delay) constraint is inherent to all communication scenarios. In fact, in many systems of current interest, such as real-time multimedia communication, delays are strictly constrained, while in packetized data communication, packets are frequently on the order of 1000 bits. Motivated by critical practical interest in non-asymptotic information-theoretic limits, this thesis studies the optimum rate-fidelity tradeoffs in lossy source coding and joint source-channel coding at a given fixed blocklength. While computable formulas for the asymptotic fundamental limits are available for a wide class of channels and sources, the luxury of being able to compute exactly (in polynomial time) the non-asymptotic fundamental limit of interest is rarely affordable. One can at most hope to obtain bounds and approximations to the information-theoretic non-asymptotic fundamental limits. The main findings of this thesis include tight bounds to the non-asymptotic fundamental limits in lossy data compression and transmission, valid for general sources without any assumptions on ergodicity or memorylessness. Moreover, in the stationary memoryless case this thesis shows a simple formula approximating the nonasymptotic fundamental limits which involves only two parameters of the source. The first part of the thesis focuses on asymptotic energy-distortion performance of zero- and low-delay transmission of Gaussian sources over energy-limited Gaussian channels. A lower bound for the leading term in the negative logarithm of the distortion, termed the energy-distortion exponent, is derived through an achievable scheme based on high-resolution quantization coupled with orthogonal signaling. The higher-order term in the negative logarithm of the distortion, termed the energy-distortion dispersion, is optimized while keeping the leading term, the energy-distortion exponent, at its optimal (respectively, the best known) value for the zero-delay (respectively, low-delay) regime. In contrast with the decaying dispersion previously reported in the literature, the proposed coding scheme achieves a constant dispersion. When the scheme is optimized, this constant can be improved with respect to its naïve value, i.e., that achieved by optimizing purely the source coding performance instead of the end-to-end distortion. Lastly, a tradeoff of achievable energy-distortion exponents is derived for broadcast scenarios by extending the point-to-point scheme to include a successive refinement source coder coupled with two rounds of orthogonal signaling. The second part examines the idea of randomized response together with the method of types and large deviations techniques to analyze the accuracy of potential electronic privacy-preserving voting and survey schemes. Previous work by Tuncel proposed a voting scheme in which votes are randomly changed by the system before being transmitted with a chosen flipping probability to preserve the privacy of the voters. The vulnerable interval in, where the voting results are very close to 50%-50%, is tackled by introducing a third possible outcome referred to as "too close to call".
