Considering the problem of joint source-channel coding (JSCC) for multi-user transmission of images over noisy channels, an autoencoder-based novel deep joint source-channel coding scheme is proposed in this paper. In the proposed JSCC scheme, the decoder can estimate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and use it to adaptively decode the transmitted image. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves impressive results in adaptability for different SNRs and is robust to the noise in the SNR estimation of the decoder. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first deep JSCC scheme that focuses on the adaptability for different SNRs and can be applied to multi-user scenarios.

Minimum power required to achieve a distortion-noise profile, i.e., a function indicating the maximum allowed distortion value for each noise level, is studied for the transmission of Gaussian sources over Gaussian channels under a regime of bandwidth approaching zero. A simple but instrumental lower bound to the minimum required power for a given profile is presented. For an upper bound, a dirty-paper based coding scheme is proposed and its power-distortion tradeoff is analyzed. Finally, upper and lower bounds to the minimum power is analyzed and compared for specific distortion-noise profiles, namely rational profiles with order one and two.

We propose a novel joint source and channel coding (JSCC) scheme for wireless image transmission that departs from the conventional use of explicit source and channel codes for compression and error correction, and directly maps the image pixel values to the complex-valued channel input signal. Our encoder-decoder pair form an autoencoder with a non trainable layer in the middle, which represents the noisy communication channel. Our results show that the proposed deep JSCC scheme outperforms separation-based digital transmission at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and low channel bandwidth regimes in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). More strikingly, deep JSCC does not suffer from the "cliff effect" as the channel SNR varies with respect to the SNR value assumed during training. In the case of a slow Rayleigh fading channel, deep JSCC can learn to communicate without explicit pilot signals or channel estimation, and significantly outperforms separation-based digital communication at all SNR and channel bandwidth values.

Recently, several methods that divide the original bitstream of an image/video progressive wavelet based source coders into multiple correlated substreams have been proposed. The principle behind transmitting independent multiple substream is to generate multiple descriptions of the source such that the graceful degradation is achieved when transmitted over severe fading channels and lossy packet networks since some of the streams may be recovered. Noting that multiple substream can benefit from multiple independent channel paths, we naturally consider Multi-Input Multi-Output communication systems where we obtain multiple independent fading channels. Depending on several factors including: the number of antennas employed, the transmission energy, the Doppler shift (due to the motion between the transmitter antenna and receiver antennas), the total transmission rate and the distortion-rate (D-R) of the source-there exists an optimal number of balanced substreams and an optimal joint source-channel coding policy such that the expected distortion at the receiver is minimized. In this paper we derive an expected distortion function at the receiver based on all of. these parameters and provide a fast real-time numerical technique to find the optimal or near optimal number of balanced substreams to be transmitted. This expected distortion is based on our derivation of the probabilistic loss patterns of a balanced multiple substream progressive source coder.. The accuracy of the derived expected distortion estimator is confirmed by Monte-Carlo simulation employing Dent's modification of Jakes' model. By accurately estimating the optimal number of balanced substream's to be transmitted, a substantial gain in visual quality at low and intermediate signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is obtained over severely fading channels.' At hi-h SNR, the single stream source coder's source efficiency makes it slightly better than the multiple substream source coder. Overall, using our analytic

Arithmetic codes are being increasingly used in the entropy coding stage in many multimedia transmission applications. Combining channel coding with arithmetic coding can give implementation and performance advantages compared to separate source and channel coding. In this work, novel improvements are introduced into a technique by Grangetto et al. that uses maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation for decoding joint source-channel coding using arithmetic codes. The arithmetic decoder is modified for quicker symbol decoding and error detection by the introduction of a look-ahead technique. and the calculation of the MAP metric is modified for faster error detection. These modifications also result in improved performance compared to the original scheme. Experimental results show an improvement of up to 0.4 dB when using soft-decision decoding and 0.6 dB when using hard-decision decoding.

Wireless image transmission and estimation techniques have found a variety of applications in 5G Internet. of Things (IoT) under the finite block length transmissions. However, the traditional digital transmission scheme is known to suffer from the "cliff effect". By using deep machine learning techniques, we propose an autoencoder-based joint source channel coding (JSCC) scheme for image transmission and estimation in multi-user wireless sensor networks. At the wireless edge, sensors independently observe a common image and encode the noisy observation to a complex vector. At the receiver side, the decoder receives all the transmitted signals to estimate the common image. We design an end-to-end autoencoder to complete this task, and combine mean squared error (MSE) and structural similarity index matrix (SSIM) as the loss function to explore both pixel-wise and structural features of the images. Our proposed scheme is evaluated in two types of noisy observation scenarios, multi-fous scenario and partial observation scenario, considering both additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and Rayleigh fading channel, and comparing the performance with the traditional transmission scheme. In both scenarios, our scheme achieves better peak-to-noise ratio (PSNR) performance, especially when the channel bandwidth is limited or the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is low.

Benefited from the advances of deep learning (DL) techniques, deep joint source-channel coding (JSCC) has shown its great potential to improve the performance of wireless transmission. However, most of the existing works focus on the DL-based transceiver design of the JSCC model, while ignoring the resource allocation problem in wireless systems. In this paper, we consider a downlink resource allocation problem, where a base station (BS) jointly optimizes the compression ratio (CR) and power allocation as well as resource block (RB) assignment of each user according to the latency and performance constraints to maximize the number of users that successfully receive their requested content with desired quality. To solve this problem, we first decompose it into two subproblems without loss of optimality. The first subproblem is to minimize the required transmission power for each user under given RB allocation. We derive the closed-form expression of the optimal transmit power by searching the maximum feasible compression ratio. The second one aims at maximizing the number of supported users through optimal user-RB pairing, which we solve by utilizing bisection search as well as Karmarkar's algorithm. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed resource allocation method in terms of the number of satisfied users with given resources.

We propose a new code design for compress-and-forward relaying over bandlimited relay-to-destination channels. The main contribution of this paper is a code design based on joint (source-channel) coding and modulation that uses the correlation between the observations at the relay and the destination as protection against channel errors. This allows for relay nodes with reduced complexity, shifting most of the processing requirements to the destination node. Moreover, by using scalar quantizers with an entropy constraint our system provides remarkable performance in channel conditions where neither amplify-and-forward nor compress-and-forward efficiently exploit the presence of a relay node. Simulation results confirm the benefits of our proposed system.

We consider the problem of transmission of correlated discrete alphabet sources over a Gaussian Multiple Access channel (GMAC). A distributed bit-to-Gaussian mapping is proposed which yields jointly Gaussian codewords. This can guarantee lossless transmission or lossy transmission with given distortions, if possible. The technique can be extended to the system with side information at the encoders and decoder.

This paper shows new tight finite-blocklength bounds for the best achievable lossy joint source-channel code rate, and demonstrates that joint source-channel code design brings considerable performance advantage over a separate one in the non-asymptotic regime. A joint source-channel code maps a block of k source symbols onto a length-n channel codeword, and the fidelity of reproduction at the receiver end is measured by the probability epsilon that the distortion exceeds a given threshold d. For memoryless sources and channels, it is demonstrated that the parameters of the best joint source-channel code must satisfy nC - kR(d) approximate to root nV + kV(d)Q(-1) (epsilon), where C and V are the channel capacity and dispersion, respectively;R(d) and V(d) are the source rate-distortion and rate-dispersion functions;and Q is the standard Gaussian complementary cdf.
