In this paper, we develop an approach toward joint source-channel coding for motion-compensated DCT-based scalable video coding and transmission. A framework for the optimal selection of the source and channel coding rates over all scalable layers is presented such that the overall distortion is minimized. The algorithm utilizes universal rate distortion characteristics which are obtained experimentally and show the sensitivity of the source encoder and decoder to channel errors. The proposed algorithm allocates the available bit rate between scalable layers and, within each layer, between source and channel coding. We present the results of this rate allocation algorithm for video transmission over a wireless channel using the H.263 Version 2 signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) scalable codec for source coding and rate-compatible punctured convolutional (RCPC) codes for channel coding. We discuss the performance of the algorithm with respect to the channel conditions, coding methodologies, layer rates, and number of layers.

We propose a joint source-channel coding (JSCC) scheme based on model-predictive control (MPC) for encoding an analog discrete-time source over a memoryless communication channel. The decoder is assumed to be fixed and given, and the MPC encoder is set to minimize the frequency-weighted mean-squared error (FWMSE) while satisfying a channel input constraint. We derive analytic expressions for the associated finite-horizon optimization MPC problem for an asymptotic (in time) average or sum channel input constraint. For the case of complex additive white Gaussian noise channel and an M-quadrature-amplitude modulation (M-QAM) decoder, these expressions can be written explicitly, which allows for an efficient numerical solution. For the case M=4 and considering a frequency weighting criterion that models the sensitivity of the human hearing, we show by simulations that our proposed scheme yields an FWMSE significantly smaller than that yielded by the corresponding non-JSCC scheme (a 2-bit uniform quantizer in tandem with a 4-QAM channel encoder and decoder). This letter considers a code design for an asymmetric Slepian-Wolf multiple-access relay channel, in which the users and relay have different channel conditions. In this case, the conventional parity approach distributed source coding is no longer applicable. Hence, a new distributed joint source-channel superposition coding (DJSC-SC) is proposed. The proposed DJSC-SC matches the asymmetric channels, and makes full use of the good channel to obtain a better performance. Simulation results show that, compared with the conventional PA, the performance of the DJSC-SC scheme has a significant improvement and is within 1.4 dB from the capacity limit.

We propose a novel joint source-channel coding (JSCC) framework that jointly optimizes encoding modes of macroblocks and unequal error protection (UEP) of packets for error-resilient video transmission, and address the problem of source packet loss due to bit errors incurred in error-prone channels. In the proposed framework, we consider the source packet loss probability as a function of the encoding configuration of a slice. The task of optimization is complicated by the inherent interdependency between macroblocks in the same slice, since the encoding mode optimization for each macroblock requires the encoding configuration of entire slice to be known in advance. We resolve such interdependency via an iterative method that alternates between the optimization of the slice size and the associated encoding modes, and we also utilize adaptive quantization for coding residual for source rate control in different channel conditions. Simulation results show that our framework outperforms existing approaches.

This paper quantifies the fundamental limits of variable-length transmission of a general (possibly analog) source over a memoryless channel with noiseless feedback, under a distortion constraint. We consider excess distortion, average distortion and guaranteed distortion (d-semifaithful codes). In contrast to the asymptotic fundamental limit, a general conclusion is that allowing variable-length codes and feedback leads to a sizable improvement in the fundamental delay-distortion tradeoff.

Consider an Internet-of-Things (IoT) system that monitors a number of multi-valued events through multiple sensors sharing the same bandwidth. Each sensor measures data correlated to one or more events, and communicates to the fusion center at a base station using grant-free random access whenever the corresponding event is active. The base station aims at detecting the active events, and, for each active event, to determine a scalar value describing each active event's state. A conventional solution based on Separate source-channel (SSC) coding would use a separate codebook for each sensor and decode the sensors' transmitted packets at the base station in order to subsequently carry out events' detection. In contrast, this paper considers a potentially more efficient solution based on joint source-channel (JSC) coding via a non-orthogonal generalization of Type-Based Multiple Access (TBMA). Accordingly, all sensors measuring the same event share the same codebook (with non-orthogonal codewords), and the base station directly detects the events' values without first performing individual decoding for each sensor. A novel Bayesian message-passing detection scheme is developed for the proposed TBMA-based protocol, and its performance is compared to conventional solutions.

Transmission of a Gaussian source over a time-varying Gaussian channel is studied in the presence of time-varying correlated side information at the receiver. A block fading model is considered for both the channel and the side information, whose states are assumed to be known only at the receiver. The optimality of separate source and channel coding in terms of average end-to-end distortion is shown when the channel is static, while the side information state follows a discrete or a continuous and quasiconcave distribution. When both the channel and side information states are time-varying, separate source and channel coding is suboptimal in general. A partially informed encoder lower bound is studied by providing the channel state information to the encoder. Several achievable transmission schemes are proposed based on uncoded transmission, separate source and channel coding, joint decoding, and hybrid digital-analog transmission. Uncoded transmission is shown to be optimal for a class of continuous and quasiconcave side information state distributions, while the channel gain may have an arbitrary distribution. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example, in which the uncoded transmission achieves the optimal performance thanks to the time-varying nature of the states, while it is suboptimal in the static version of the same problem. Then, the optimal distortion exponent, which quantifies the exponential decay rate of the expected distortion in the high SNR regime, is characterized for Nakagami distributed channel and side information states, and it is shown to be achieved by hybrid digital-analog and joint decoding schemes in certain cases, illustrating the suboptimality of pure digital or analog transmission in general.

In this paper, we propose a joint source-channel coding (JSCC) methodology which minimizes the end-to-end distortion for the transmission of H.264/MPEG-4 scalable video over packet loss channels. The proposed JSCC-approach employs low-density parity-check codes in order to provide channel protection and relies on Lagrangian-based optimization techniques to derive the appropriate protection levels for each layer produced by the scalable source codec. Experiments show that our JSCC methodology delivers competitive results to state-of-the-art Lagrangian-based algorithms. However, in contrast to the state-of-the-art, our approach significantly reduces the computational complexity. We conclude that the proposed JSCC methodology provides optimized resilience against transmission errors in scalable video streaming over variable-bandwidth error-prone channels.

A new analog-digital hybrid coding architecture for joint source-channel coding is proposed. The encoder generates a channel input by a symbol-by-symbol mapping of the observed (analog) source and its (digital) compression codeword, while the decoder reconstructs the source by a symbol-by-symbol mapping of the (analog) channel output and the decoded (digital) compression codeword from it. When applied to the problem of lossy communication of sources over the two-user discrete memoryless interference channel, this hybrid coding scheme achieves the best known performance and recovers as special cases several previous results on lossless and lossy communication over single hop networks.

We consider the lossy transmission of a memoryless bivariate Gaussian source over an average-power-constrained bandwidth-mismatched Gaussian broadcast channel with two receivers where each receiver is interested in only one component. We propose new hybrid digital/analog coding schemes which are demonstrated to outperform the previously known schemes.
