In this paper, we are interested in the lossy transmission of a single source over parallel additive white Gaussian noise channels with independent quasi-static fading and receiver channel state information. We call this the lossy multi-connectivity problem. Motivated by the ultra-reliable and low latency communication requirements, we consider the finite blocklength performance of lossy multi-connectivity. By generalizing the non-asymptotic bounds of Kostina and Verdi' for the lossy joint source-channel coding problem, we derive non-asymptotic achievability and converse bounds for the lossy multi-connectivity problem. Using these non-asymptotic bounds, under mild conditions on the fading distribution, we derive good approximations for the finite blocklength performance in the spirit of second-order asymptotics for any discrete memoryless source under any bounded distortion measure. Our results demonstrate that the asymptotic notions of outage probability and outage capacity are actually good criteria even in the finite blocklength regime. Finally, we illustrate our results via numerical examples.

SoftCast-based linear video coding and transmission (LVCT) schemes have been proposed as a promising alternative to traditional video coding and transmission schemes in wireless environments. Currently, the performance of LVCT schemes is evaluated by means of traditional objective scores such as PSNR or SSIM. Nevertheless, since the compression is performed in a very different way from traditional coding schemes such as HEVC, visual artifacts are also quite different and deserve to be subjectively assessed. In this paper, we propose a subjective quality assessment of SoftCast, pioneer and standard of the LVCT schemes. This study aims to better understand the trade-offs between the LVCT parameters that can be tuned to improve the quality. These parameters, including different GoP-sizes, Compression Ratios (CR) and channel Signal-to-Noise Ratio (CSNR), are used to generate a dataset of 85 videos. A Double Stimulus Impairment Scale (DSIS) test is performed on the received videos to assess the perceived quality. Results show that the key characteristic of SoftCast, the linear relation between CSNR and PSNR, is also observed with the Mean-Opinion Scores (MOS), except at high CSNR where the quality saturates. In addition, Bjpntegaard model is used to quantify the trade-offs between CR, GoP-size and CSNR, depending on the intended application. Finally, the performance of objective metrics compared to the obtained MOS is evaluated. Results show that Multi-Scale SSIM (MS-SSIM), SSIM and Video Multimethod Assessment Fusion (VMAF) metrics offer the best correlation with the MOS values.

Combined source and channel coding is a technique to mitigate channel errors without increasing the bit error rate. channel optimized vector quantizer (COVQ) [3] performs these objectives in the context of vector quantization. This paper presents a study of channel optimized matrix quantizer (COMQ) applied to quantize the Line Spectral Pair (LSP) parameters [5] as an extension of COVQ technique. Gaussian and slow-fading Rayleigh channels are considered and GMSK (Gaussian Minimum Shift-Keying) is used as modulation technique. Several channel signal to noise ratio (CSNR) are considered to measure the performance of this system. In addition, for comparison purposes, the performance of other schemes for quantizing the LSP parameters are computed.

Wireless applications are subject to the end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. This paper presents a new resources allocation algorithm that allows to transmit scalable multimedia data over a frequency selective channel with partial channel knowledge. The available resources are subject to payload and QoS constraints and the algorithm aims at maximizing the transmission robustness to channel estimation errors. The impact of this technique is evaluated for a MPEG-4 audio application.

We consider the design problem of a strategic quantizer over a noisy channel, extending the classical work on channel-optimized quantization to strategic settings where the encoder and the decoder have misaligned objectives. Building on our recent work on strategic quantization over noiseless channels, we employ a random channel index assignment mapping, as done in prior work on classical channel-optimized quantizer design literature, combined with a dynamic programming approach to optimize quantization boundaries. Our analysis and numerical results demonstrate several interesting aspects of channel-optimized strategic quantization which do not appear in its classical (nonstrategic) counterpart. We consider the joint source-channel coding (JSCC) problem where the real valued outputs of two correlated memoryless Gaussian sources are scalar quantized, bit assigned, and transmitted, without applying any error correcting code, over a multiple access channel (MAC) which consists of two orthogonal point-to-point time-correlated Rayleigh fading sub-channels with soft-decision demodulation. At the receiver side, a joint sequence maximum a posteriori (MAP) detector is used to exploit the correlation between the two sources as well as the redundancy left in the quantizer's indices, the channel's soft-decision outputs, and noise memory. The MAC's sub-channels are modeled via non-binary Markov noise discrete channels recently shown to effectively represent point-to-point fading channels. For the simple case of quantizing the sources with two levels, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition under which the joint sequence MAP decoder can be reduced to a simple instantaneous symbol-by-symbol decoder. Then, using numerical results obtained by system simulation, it is observed that when the sources are highly correlated and soft-decision quantization is used, JSCC can profit from a high correlation in the channel noise process and provide significant signal-to-distortion ratio improvements of up to 6.3 dB over a fully interleaved channel.

In this paper we address visual communications via printing channels from an information-theoretic point of view as communications with side information. The solution to this problem addresses important aspects of multimedia data processing, security and management, since printed documents are still the most common form of visual information representation. Two practical approaches to side information communications for printed documents are analyzed in the paper. The first approach represents a layered joint source-channel coding for printed documents. This approach is based on a self-embedding concept where information is first encoded assuming a Wyner-Ziv set-up and then embedded into the original data using a Gel'fand-Pinsker construction and taking into account properties of printing channels. The second approach is based on Wyner-Ziv and Berger-Flynn-Gray set-ups and assumes two separated communications channels where an appropriate distributed coding should be elaborated. The first printing channel is considered to be a direct visual channel for images ("analog" channel with degradations). The second "digital channel" with constrained capacity is considered to be an appropriate auxiliary channel. We demonstrate both theoretically and practically how one can benefit from this sort of "distributed paper communications".

This paper proposes a cooperative multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) architecture to transmit the video reliably. By exploring the configurable resources of the scalable video and the coded MIMO system, we further propose a novel joint source-channel coding (JSCC) framework with optimal tradeoff among diversity, multiplexing and coding gains. In this framework, the concatenated low-density parity-check codes (LDPC) and diversity-embedded space-time block codes (DE-STBC) provide double unequal error protection for the video layers, and the STBCs switching enables the adaptability to the varying channel. Experiments demonstrate the superiority of cooperative architecture and the effectiveness of our JSCC algorithm.

Optimal scalar quantizer design for transmission over a finite-state channel is considered. The objective is to minimize the mean-squared error when the channel is in the normal mode of operation, while guaranteeing a minimum fidelity when the channel is in the ''bad'' state. An optimal quantizer design algorithm for the general case where noisy state information is available both at the receiver and at the transmitter is derived. It is shown that using mixed strategies is necessary in order to achieve the optimal performance. Finally, the case where the observation is noisy is considered and it is shown that the optimal scheme in this case is to apply the algorithm for the ''no observation noise'' to the mean-squared estimate of the desired random variable from the noisy data.

We present a source-channel coding system for operation over code-division multiple-access channels with time-varying conditions. The proposed system consists of a multistage vector quantizer (MSVQ) in conjunction with unequal protection against channel errors. The receiver estimates the channel conditions and decodes as many stages of the quantizer as can be reliably decoded, The approach to system design and optimization is first derived and evaluated for a system that employs hard decoding of stage indices. The approach is then extended to the more general case of weighted decoding. Simulation results are given for transmission of Gauss-Markov sources over broadcast and slow fading channels. Consistent and substantial improvement is achieved over the standard MSVQ with equal error protection, and the gains, in terms of source signal-to-noise ratio, are in the range of 3-5 dB.
