This paper investigates a new approach to formulate performance indices of biometric system using information theoretic models. The performance indices proposed here (unlike conventionally used FAR, GAR, DET etc.) are scalable in estimating performance of large scale biometric system. This work proposes a framework for identification capacity of a biometric system, along with 'insights on number of cohort users, capacity enhancements from user specific statistics etc. While incorporating feature level information in a rate-distortion framework, we derive condition for optimal feature representation. Furthermore, employing entropy measures to distance (hamming) distribution of the encoded templates, this paper proposes an upper bound for false random correspondence probability. Our analysis concludes that capacity can be the performance index of a biometric system while individuality expressed in false random correspondence can be the performance index of the biometric trait and representation. This paper also derives these indices and quantifies them from system parameters.

Conventionally, posterior matching is investigated in channel coding and block encoding contexts - the source symbols are equiprobably distributed and are entirely known by the encoder before the transmission. In this paper, we consider a streaming source, whose symbols progressively arrive at the encoder at a sequence of deterministic times. We derive the joint source-channel coding (JSCC) reliability function for streaming over a discrete memoryless channel (DMC) with feedback under regularity conditions. We propose a novel instantaneous encoding phase that operates during the symbol arriving period and that achieves the JSCC reliability function for streaming when followed by a block encoding scheme that achieves the JSCC reliability function for a classical source whose symbols are fully accessible before the transmission. The instantaneous encoding phase partitions the evolving message alphabet into groups whose priors are close to the capacity-achieving distribution, and randomizes the group indices to ensure that the transmitted group index has the capacity-achieving distribution. Surprisingly, the JSCC reliability function for streaming is equal to that for a fully accessible source, implying that the knowledge of the entire symbol sequence before the transmission offers no advantage in terms of the reliability function.

Unequal error protection (UEP) for multimedia communications relies on transmitting more important data through the sub-channels experiencing lower bit error rates (BERs). In radio broadcasting, UEP is implemented by deploying multiresolution (MR) modulations which allow the support for users close to the transmitter with higher perceived recovered image quality, while the users farther away experience the acceptable quality. This paper proposes a new approach to design MR modulations for such an image broadcasting scenario that optimizes the near users quality by exploiting the inherent scalability in image compression and UEP flexibility in 2-D modulation schemes. The proposed new framework for the design of MR modulations effectively integrates constellation distances and priority bits assignments, resulting in two user optimized joint source-channel coding. We present the simulation results for near and far users's image quality in such two-tier optimized radio broadcasting systems.

We investigate multicast/broadcast of digital video over spread-spectrum CDMA cellular networks, a platform targeted at various kinds of multimedia services. In particular, we propose an end-to-end embedded transmission scheme which combines a scalable video source coder, adaptive power allocation, adaptive channel coding and an embedded multiresolution modulation strategy to simultaneously deliver a basic quality-of-service (QoS) to less capable receivers and an enhanced QoS for more capable receivers. We demonstrate the efficacy of this approach using the ITU-T H.263+ video source coder, although the approach is generally applicable to other scalable source coding schemes as well.

The proposed relaying scheme, which is an optimized scalar quantize-and-forward (QF) protocol, has at least three attractive features: 1. it is simple;2. it exploits the signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) of the source-relay and relay-destination channels;3. it can be seen as a digital alternative of the conventional (analog) amplify-and-forward (AF) in a digital relay transceiver. The presented QF protocol is optimized in terms of end-to-end distortion, extending the idea of joint source-channel coding. Using this cooperation protocol over orthogonal relay channels, it is shown that the quantization noise introduced by the relay can significantly degrade the receiver performance if the latter uses a maximum ratio combiner (MRC) to combine the two signals from the source and relay. In order for the receiver to compensate for this effect, we propose a maximum likelihood detector (MLD), which is optimum for the QF protocol.

Characterizing the set of achievable distortions in lossy transmission of dependent sources over multi-user channels is an open problem. Even for a channel such as the multiple access channel, where the capacity is well-understood, the complete characterization of achievable distortions is still unknown. Since separation of source coding and channel coding is sub-optimal for this case, bounds on achievable distortions require tools beyond prior channel capacities and rate-distortion bounds. In this paper we propose a systematic approach for finding lower bounds on the set of distortions achievable through joint source-channel coding.

We consider the image transmission problem over a noisy wireless channel via deep learning-based joint source-channel coding (DeepJSCC) along with a denoising diffusion probabilistic model (DDPM) at the receiver. Specifically, we are interested in the perception-distortion trade-off in the practical finite block length regime, in which separate source and channel coding can be highly suboptimal. We introduce a novel scheme, where the conventional DeepJSCC encoder targets transmitting a lower resolution version of the image, which later can be refined thanks to the generative model available at the receiver. In particular, we utilize the range-null space decomposition of the target image;DeepJSCC transmits the range-space of the image, while DDPM progressively refines its null space contents. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate significant improvements in distortion and perceptual quality of reconstructed images compared to standard DeepJSCC and the state-of-the-art generative learning-based method.

Several embedded video coding schemes have been recently developed for multimedia streaming over IP. In particular, Fine-Granular -Scalability, (FGS) video coding has been recently adopted by the MPEG-4 standard as the core video-compression method for streaming applications. From its inception, the FGS scalability, structure was designed to be packet-loss resilient especially under Unequal Packet-loss Protection (UPP). In this paper we introduce the notion of Fine Grained Loss Protection (FGLP), which provides UPP within the FGS enhancement-layer, and we develop an analytical framework for evaluating FGLP bounds. Based on these bounds, we show the impact of applying fine-grained protection to the FGS enhancement-layer for different types of video sequences and over a wide range of bit-rates and packet-loss ratios. Subsequently the FGLP framework has been implemented using forward error correction codes and its performance for Internet video streaming has been evaluated. As illustrated by our extensive simulation results, fine-grained loss protection for the FGS enhancement-layer can provide significant resilience under moderate-to-high packet-loss ratios (e.g. 5-10%).

This work focuses on the construction of optimized binary signaling schemes for two-sender uncoded transmission of correlated non-uniform sources over non-orthogonal Gaussian multiple access channels. Based on an error-rate analysis under joint maximum-a-posteriori decoding, optimized binary-pulsed amplitude modulation constellations for two senders are derived to minimize the system's error rate. The joint probability distribution of the two-senders' source is observed to induce a special layout of optimized constellations which can effectively control the interference due to non-orthogonal transmission. Numerical results further confirm that significant gains are achievable by the proposed design.

In a sensor network, exploiting the correlation among different sources allows a significant reduction of the transmitted energy at the cost of a complex decoder scheme. This paper introduces the first hardware implementation for joint source-channel decoding of correlated sources. Specifically, a dual-clustered VLIW processor with a highly optimized datapath is presented.
