In this paper we consider the problem of faded wireless image and video transmission schemes under energy transmission constraints. An example of such a constrained system experiencing Rayleigh fading is Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) where power control is used. We imposed on the average energy transmitted per an image or image sequence. A computationally inexpensive analytic mean square error (MSE) distortion rate (D-R) estimator for progressive wavelet coders which generates an exact distortion rate (D-R) function for 2-D and 3-D SPIHT algorithm is utilized from our previous research. Using the D-R function, the expected mean square error(MSE) at the receiver is minimized by optimally assigning the energy and parity allocation per each transmission block among the packets. A gain of 1.09 dB relative to optimal equal error protection (EEP) is obtained by varying both energy and parity among the transmission blocks. The results can be used to to increase image and video quality in CDMA systems.

This paper proposes a hybrid sender/receiver-driven error protection scheme to transmit scalable video packets over packet-lossy peer-to-peer networks. In our scheme, given an estimated system uplink capacity, a joint source-channel coding (JSCC) mechanism based on receiver-driven subscriptions is proposed to minimize the visual distortion received by child-peers by subscribing to appropriate amounts of source and channel coding packets. Because the bandwidth for inter-peer transmissions may fluctuate largely due to peer dynamics, in our method peers estimate the available system uplink capacity based on consensus propagation to avoid the fluctuating allocations of JSCC. To efficiently utilize the uplink bandwidth of peers, parent-peers use sender-driven contribution-guided peer selection to reject the low-contribution subscriptions requested from candidate child-peers. Simulation results demonstrate that our method significantly improves visual quality, compared to other state-of-the-art schemes.

joint source-channel coding schemes based on deep neural networks (DeepJSCC) have recently achieved remarkable performance for wireless image transmission. However, these methods usually focus only on the distortion of the reconstructed signal at the receiver side with respect to the source at the transmitter side, rather than the perceptual quality of the reconstruction which carries more semantic information. As a result, severe perceptual distortion can be introduced under extreme conditions such as low bandwidth and low signal-to-noise ratio. In this work, we propose CommIN, which views the recovery of high-quality source images from degraded reconstructions as an inverse problem. To address this, CommIN combines Invertible Neural Networks (INN) with diffusion models, aiming for superior perceptual quality. Through experiments, we show that our CommIN significantly improves the perceptual quality compared to DeepJSCC under extreme conditions and outperforms other inverse problem approaches used in DeepJSCC.

We investigate the minimum transmitted energy required to reproduce k source samples with a given fidelity after transmission over a memoryless Gaussian channel. In particular, we analyze the reduction in transmitted energy that accrues thanks to the availability of noiseless feedback. Allowing a nonvanishing excess distortion probability epsilon boosts the asymptotic fundamental limit by a factor of 1 - epsilon, with or without feedback. If feedback is available, achieving guaranteed distortion with finite average energy is possible.

The coordination of autonomous agents is a critical issue for decentralized communication networks. Instead of transmitting information, the agents interact in a coordinated manner in order to optimize a general objective function. A target joint probability distribution is achievable if there exists a code such that the sequences of symbols are jointly typical. The empirical coordination is strongly related to the joint source-channel coding with two-sided state information and correlated source and state. This problem is also connected to state communication and is open for non-causal encoder and decoder. We characterize the optimal solutions for perfect channel, for lossless decoding, for independent source and channel, for causal encoding and for causal decoding.

Ensuring intelligible speech communication for hearing assistive devices in low-latency scenarios presents significant challenges in terms of speech enhancement, coding and transmission. In this paper, we propose novel solutions for low-latency joint speech transmission and enhancement, leveraging deep neural networks (DNNs). Our approach integrates two state-of-the-art DNN architectures for low-latency speech enhancement and low-latency analog joint source-channel-based transmission, creating a combined low-latency system and jointly training both systems in an end-to-end approach. Due to the computational demands of the enhancement system, this order is suitable when high computational power is unavailable in the decoder, like hearing assistive devices. The proposed system enables the configuration of total latency, achieving high performance even at latencies as low as 3 ms, which is typically challenging to attain. The simulation results provide compelling evidence that a joint enhancement and transmission system is superior to a simple concatenation system in diverse settings, encompassing various wireless channel conditions, latencies, and background noise scenarios.

The focus of this demonstration is the performance of streaming video over the mobile wireless channel. We compare two schemes: the standard approach to video which transmits H. 264/AVC-encoded stream over 802.11-like PHY, and SoftCast - a clean-slate design for wireless video where the source transmits one video stream that each receiver decodes to a video quality commensurate with its specific instantaneous channel quality.

We propose a new scheme for wireless video multicast based on compressed sensing. It has the property of graceful degradation and, unlike systems adhering to traditional separate coding, it does not suffer from a cliff effect. Compressed sensing is applied to generate measurements of equal importance from a video such that a receiver with a better channel will naturally have more information at hands to reconstruct the content without penalizing others. We experimentally compare different random matrices at the encoder side in terms of their performance for video transmission. We further investigate how properties of natural images can be exploited to improve the reconstruction performance by transmitting a small amount of side information. And we propose a way of exploiting inter-frame correlation by extending only the decoder. Finally we compare our results with a different scheme targeting the same problem with simulations and find competitive results for some channel configurations.

Collaborative inference systems are one of the emerging solutions for deploying deep neural networks (DNNs) at the wireless network edge. Their main idea is to divide a DNN into two parts, where the first is shallow enough to be reliably executed at edge devices of limited computational power, while the second part is executed at an edge server with higher computational capabilities. The main advantage of such systems is that the input of the DNN gets compressed as the subsequent layers of the shallow part extract only the information necessary for the task. As a result, significant communication savings can be achieved compared to transmitting raw input samples. In this work, we study early exiting in the context of collaborative inference, which allows obtaining inference results at the edge device for certain samples, without the need to transmit the partially processed data to the edge server at all, leading to further communication savings. The central part of our system is the transmission-decision (TD) mechanism, which, given the information from the early exit, and the wireless channel conditions, decides whether to keep the early exit prediction or transmit the data to the edge server for further processing. In this paper, we evaluate various TD mechanisms and show experimentally, that for an image classification task over the wireless edge, proper utilization of early exits can provide both performance gains and significant communication savings.

The purpose of our work is to report a solution for the problem of the joint source-channel coding (JSCC) of the H.263-DG bit stream to be transmitted through error prone channels. Our investigations show that the H.263 syntactical elements have different error sensitivities. This result led us to classify them into several classes of different significance. A more robust scheme, named H.263-DG, was obtained by optimally grouping the H.263 classes. This resulted in a maximum PSNR gain of 5.5 dB at 10(-3) bit error rate (BER). The solution presented in this paper further increases the error robustness by unequal protecting the classes of H.263-DG coding scheme. A good reconstructed video quality is achieved at 64 Kbps transmission rate using Rate Compatible Punctured Convolutional (RCPC) codes. By exploiting the different class sensitivities, we present an Unequal Error Protection (UEP) scheme that outperforms the optimal Equal Error Protection (EEP). The forward error correction adopted has resulted in PSNR improvements over 20 dB for bit error rates higher than 4x10(-3).
