The basic tradeoff in lossy compression is that between the compression ratio (rate) and the fidelity of reproduction of the object that is compressed. Traditional (asymptotic) information theory seeks to describe the optimum tradeoff between rate and fidelity achievable in the limit of infinite length of the source block to be compressed. A perennial question in information theory is how relevant the asymptotic fundamental limits are when the communication system is forced to operate at a given fixed blocklength. The finite blocklength (delay) constraint is inherent to all communication scenarios. In fact, in many systems of current interest, such as real-time multimedia communication, delays are strictly constrained, while in packetized data communication, packets are frequently on the order of 1000 bits. Motivated by critical practical interest in non-asymptotic information-theoretic limits, this thesis studies the optimum rate-fidelity tradeoffs in lossy source coding and joint source-channel coding at a given fixed blocklength. While computable formulas for the asymptotic fundamental limits are available for a wide class of channels and sources, the luxury of being able to compute exactly (in polynomial time) the non-asymptotic fundamental limit of interest is rarely affordable. One can at most hope to obtain bounds and approximations to the information-theoretic non-asymptotic fundamental limits. The main findings of this thesis include tight bounds to the non-asymptotic fundamental limits in lossy data compression and transmission, valid for general sources without any assumptions on ergodicity or memorylessness. Moreover, in the stationary memoryless case this thesis shows a simple formula approximating the nonasymptotic fundamental limits which involves only two parameters of the source. Reliable and efficient communication of analog observations over a fading multiple access channel (MAC) is important in wireless sensor networks. A sensor network can be well modelled by a set of correlated Gaussian sources communicating to a common receiver over a fading Gaussian MAC (GMAC). It is known that traditional separate source-channel (SSC) coding is sub-optimal when channel state information (CSI) is not available to the transmitters. For this case, neither the optimum performance theoretical achievable (OPTA) nor any practical coding schemes that can outperform traditional coding, remain known. This thesis investigates the minimum mean square error (MMSE) of communicating a pair of Gaussian sources over a bandwidth-matched GMAC with block Rayleigh fading (BF-GMAC) in the absence of transmitter CSI. We derive several upper-bounds to the MMSE as a function of transmitter powers, channel signal-to-noise ratio (CSNR), and the correlation coefficient of the two sources. To derive nontrivial upper bounds which improve on those of SSC coding and uncoded transmission, we incorporate ideas from joint source-channel coding and hybrid digital–analog (HDA) coding to construct coding schemes for which the achievable MMSE can be determined. One main contribution is two new MMSE upper bounds, which appear to be the best known characterizations of the OPTA to date. These bounds (JSC-VQ and HDA-JSC-VQ bounds) are derived by considering a transmission scheme where optimally vector quantized Gaussian sources are directly transmitted in analog form over the BF-GMAC. A comparison of these bounds with the MMSE bound for traditional SSC coding shows a gap that grows with source correlation and CSNR. Although there exists a gap even when the sources are uncorrelated, this gap is relatively small. On the Asymptotics of Some Low-Delay Transmission Scenarios

The first part of the thesis focuses on asymptotic energy-distortion performance of zero- and low-delay transmission of Gaussian sources over energy-limited Gaussian channels. A lower bound for the leading term in the negative logarithm of the distortion, termed the energy-distortion exponent, is derived through an achievable scheme based on high-resolution quantization coupled with orthogonal signaling. The higher-order term in the negative logarithm of the distortion, termed the energy-distortion dispersion, is optimized while keeping the leading term, the energy-distortion exponent, at its optimal (respectively, the best known) value for the zero-delay (respectively, low-delay) regime. In contrast with the decaying dispersion previously reported in the literature, the proposed coding scheme achieves a constant dispersion. When the scheme is optimized, this constant can be improved with respect to its naïve value, i.e., that achieved by optimizing purely the source coding performance instead of the end-to-end distortion. Lastly, a tradeoff of achievable energy-distortion exponents is derived for broadcast scenarios by extending the point-to-point scheme to include a successive refinement source coder coupled with two rounds of orthogonal signaling. The second part examines the idea of randomized response together with the method of types and large deviations techniques to analyze the accuracy of potential electronic privacy-preserving voting and survey schemes. Previous work by Tuncel proposed a voting scheme in which votes are randomly changed by the system before being transmitted with a chosen flipping probability to preserve the privacy of the voters. The vulnerable interval in, where the voting results are very close to 50%-50%, is tackled by introducing a third possible outcome referred to as "too close to call". We consider distributed linear transceivers for sending a second-order wide-sense stationary process observed by two noisy sensors over a Gaussian multiple-access channel (MAC). We derive the minimum mean-square error (MSE) distributed linear transceiver. The optimal linear transmitter exploits bandwidth expansion by repeating transmission and the transmitters at the two sensors are the same except for a constant factor. When the source is white, uncoded transmission is the best linear code for any SNR. But for a colored source, whitening transmit filter is sub-optimal. In high SNR regime, the magnitude response of the optimal transmission filter is inversely proportional to fourth-root of the power spectrum of the process (while that for the whitening filter is inversely proportional to the square-root of the spectrum). In the special case of a single sensor with Gaussian source, we also quantify the performance loss of linear source-channel codes with respect to the Shannon limit.

Image-based teleoperation offers significant flexibility and efficiency in several applications, such as teleoperated driving;still, it highly depends on reliable communication bandwidth and high Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), which is hard to guarantee in uncontrolled environments. This poster tackles the challenge of reliable communication under limited bandwidth. We propose to leverage the context and task knowledge to guide the compression to favor task performance rather than image fidelity. In particular, we jointly designed source-channel coding with a task performer to present an end-to-end TAsk-Guided Image Communication (TAGIC) framework, which uses Soft Introspective Variational Autoencoder (S-IntroVAE) and prioritizes the task-critical image information with limited communication bandwidth in the low SNR region. We demonstrate the effectiveness of TAGIC in a teleoperated driving scenario through the CARLA simulation platform - a widely used simulator in the autonomous driving community. Given the equivalent value of bandwidth compression ratio, TAGIC achieves a 202.6% improvement in the driving score over existing methods at low SNR.

We consider analog multiple description joint source-channel schemes for the transmission of a Gaussian source over two independent AWGN parallel channels under a quadratic error distortion criteria. For such systems, Lines mapping was proved to be a simple and efficient mapping when MMSE decoding is used. However, MMSE decoding presents a high computational load. In order to reduce complexity of such schemes, this paper studies the suitability of replacing the MMSE decoders by the much simpler ML decoders. The scenario where the ML decoders have some additional side information (Wyner-Ziv scenario) is also analyzed. Their performances are compared with the corresponding theoretical bound and with the obtained simulation results of their MMSE counterparts.

Image and video transmission is highly expected to proliferate with the wide spread of Wi-Fi devices and the introduction of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. This paper proposes a novel precoder for video transmission in overloaded MIMO systems, which is based on an eigen-beam space division multiplexing (E-SDM) technique. This paper also proposes a low complexity postcoder, which detects some of data symbols by a linear approach and the others by a prevoting vector cancellation (PVC) approach. It is shown from simulation results that the proposed precoder and postcoder achieve 40 dB in peak signal-to-noise ratio while reducing the computational complexity by over 61% compared to the conventional PVC-based detection when received signal-to-noise ratio is higher than 10 dB.

We study the lossy communication of a bivariate Gaussian source over an interference channel with the presence of a helping relay. We assume that the wireless links introduce random phase shifts which are unknown to the transmitters (including the relay) and call the channel a phase incoherent interference relay channel (PI-IRC). We derive inner and outer bounds for the achievable distortion region, where the inner bound is derived under specific strong interference conditions as well as strong gain conditions between transmitters and the relay. When the sources are correlated, we find an approximate achievable distortion region in the high SNR regime. In case of independent sources, the bounds are tight and by explicitly providing the achievable distortion region, we show that a separation theorem results for the PI-IRC under strong interference conditions. By removing the relay, the result also specializes to an interference channel.

The proliferation of edge-based wireless speech applications necessitates the development of resource-efficient, low-latency speech communication systems capable of functioning across diverse communication channel conditions. Ensuring intelligible speech communication under conditions of constrained resources and low-latency presents a challenging problem within the domain of speech transmission. In this paper, we introduce a very low-latency configurable speech transmission system leveraging joint source-channel coding and deep neural networks (DNNs). Our proposed system is a unified deep neural network system engineered to operate effectively across a wide range of wireless communication channel scenarios. The system encompasses both a joint source-channel encoder and a joint source-channel decoder, each with access to channel state information (CSI). In this context, CSI signifies the type of fading in the wireless channel. Notably, our system has a total latency of 2 ms. Through extensive simulations, we empirically demonstrate that the proposed configurable system closely approximates the performance of ideal systems specifically tailored to individual wireless channel scenarios. Our evaluation is rooted in the assessment of instrumental measures of speech quality and intelligibility, affirming the efficacy of our system in diverse and resource-constrained communication contexts.
