Error correction for low power sensors in asynchronous communication

We propose a forward error correction scheme for asynchronous sampling via level crossing (LC) sampling and time encoding, where the dominant errors consist of pulse deletions and insertions, and where encoding is required to take place in an instantaneous fashion. For LC sampling the presented scheme consists of a combination of an outer systematic convolutional code, an embedded inner marker code, and power-efficient frequency-shift keying modulation at the sensor node. Decoding is first obtained via a maximum a-posteriori (MAP) decoder for the inner marker code, which achieves synchronization for the insertion and deletion channel, followed by MAP decoding for the outer convolutional code. Besides investigating the rate trade-off between marker and convolutional codes, we also show that residual redundancy in the asynchronously sampled source signal can be successfully exploited in combination with redundancy only from a marker code. This provides a low complexity alternative for deletion and insertion error correction compared to using explicit redundancy. For time encoding, only the pulse timing is of relevance at the receiver, and the outer channel code is replaced by a quantizer to represent the relative position of the pulse timing. Numerical simulations show that LC sampling outperforms time encoding in the low to moderate signal-to-noise ratio regime by a large margin. (c) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Total system energy minimization for wireless image transmission

In this paper, we focus on the total-system-energy minimization of a wireless image transmission system including both digital and analog components. Traditionally, digital power consumption has been ignored in system design, since transmit power has been the most significant component. However, as we move to an era of pico-cell environments and as more complex signal processing algorithms are being used at higher data rates, the digital power consumption of these systems becomes an issue. We present an energy-optimized image transmission system for indoor wireless applications which exploits the variabilities in the image data and the wireless multipath channel by employing dynamic algorithm transformations and joint source-channel coding. The variability in the image data is characterized by the rate-distortion curve, and the variability in the channel characteristics is characterized by the path-loss and impulse response of the channel. The system hardware configuration space is characterized by the error-correction capability of the channel encoder/decoder, number of powered-up fingers in the RAKE receiver, and transmit power of the power amplifier. An optimization algorithm is utilized to obtain energy-optimal configurations subject to end-to-end performance constraints. The proposed design is tested over QCIF images, IMT-2000 channels and 0.18 mum, 2.5 V CMOS technology parameters. Simulation results over various images, various distances, two different channels, and two different rates show that the average energy savings in utilizing a total-system-energy minimization over a fixed system (designed for the worst image, the worst channel and the maximum distance) are 53.6% and 67.3%, respectively, for short-range (under 20 m) and long-range (over 20 m) systems.

Precoder and Postcoder Design for Wireless Video Streaming with Overloaded Multiuser MIMO-OFDM Systems

Mobile video traffic is expected to increase explosively because of the proliferating number of Wi-Fi terminals. An overloaded multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique allows the receiver to implement smaller number of antennas than the transmitter in exchange for degradation in video quality and a large amount of computational complexity for postcoding at the receiver side. This paper proposes a novel linear precoder for high-quality video streaming in overloaded multiuser MIMO systems, which protects visually significant portions of a video stream. A low complexity postcoder is also proposed, which detects some of data symbols by linear detection and the others by a prevoting vector cancellation (PVC) approach. It is shown from simulation results that the combination use of the proposed precoder and postcoder achieves higher-quality video streaming to multiple users in a wider range of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) than a conventional unequal error protection scheme. The proposed precoder attains 40 dB in peak signal-to-noise ratio even in poor channel conditions such as the SNR of 12 dB. In addition, due to the stepwise acquisition of data symbols by means of linear detection and PVC, the proposed postcoder reduces the number of complex additions by 76% and that of multiplications by 64% compared to the conventional PVC.

A channel code is constructed using sparse matrices for stationary memoryless channels that do not necessarily have a symmetric property like a binary symmetric channel. It is also shown that the constructed code has the following remarkable properties. 1. joint source-channel coding: Combining channel code with lossy source code, which is also constructed by sparse matrices, a simpler joint source-channel code can be constructed than that constructed by the ordinary block code. 2. Universal coding: The constructed channel code has a universal property under a specified condition.

Determination of optimal distortion-based protection in progressive image transmission: A heuristic approach

In this paper, we describe a method for fast determination of distortion-based optimal unequal error protection (UEP) of bitstreams generated by embedded image coders and transmitted over memoryless noisy channels. The UEP problem is reduced to the more general problem of finding a path in a graph, where each path of the graph represents a possible protection policy, with the objective of selecting the best path being that one inducing minimal distortion. The problem is combinatorially complex and excludes a brute force approach. The solution is provided by, applying heuristic information from the problem domain to reduce search complexity. In particular, we use graph search procedure A suggested by Hart et al., well known in the field of artificial intelligence, to avoid exhaustive search. Numerical results show that this technique outperforms the method presented by Hamzaoui et al., in terms of Mean Square Error (MSE) distortion and computational complexity. After testing our solution using analytical models of the operational distortion curves proposed by Charfi et al., we implement a transmission architecture that, using the actual distortion values generated by a real embedded coder, computes the optimal protection policy for the considered image, protects the packets, and transmits them over a channel.

Distributed soft video transmission based on hybrid digital and analog scheme

This study presents a novel distributed soft video delivery scheme using hybrid digital and analog framework, which realizes a relatively lightweight encoder as well as good robustness. Specifically, after applying scalar quantization to the interframes, the scaled analog information (quantization error) and the scaled digital information (quantized source) are superimposed and then transmitted. In this way, the proposed scheme directly delivers pseudo-analog symbols over the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) channels and involves no complicated digital codec. Moreover, we utilize cross-frame correlation to implement a distributed paradigm which further reduces the encoder complexity since the complex motion estimation and compensation algorithms are transferred to the decoder. Accordingly, the power distortion optimization scheme, which resolve the allocation of power and the parameters optimization to achieve minimum transmission distortion, is proposed. To solve it, first, we formulate the power distortion expressions regarding quantization parameters and power allocation coefficients. Subsequently, we divide the problem into two sub-problems based on the fast coordinate descent method and further propose a greedy iterative algorithm to optimize them. We also develop a data-driven optimization algorithm based on deep learning that reduces the additional delay brought by the iterative optimization method. At the receiver, we estimate the quantization output and quantization error by the modified linear least squares estimation with the virtual noise variance. Based on the simulation results, the proposed framework has a better performance in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio and structural similarity than the relevant cutting-edge schemes while maintaining good robustness.

In this paper, an improved soft in soft out (SISO) iterative decoding scheme for joint source-channel coding is presented. It is realized as the iterative soft decoding of arithmetic code based on sequential decoding to successively prune the decoding tree. Making use of the forecasted forbidden symbols, an error-resistant arithmetic code with an improved a posteriori probability (APP) metric is adopted to further enhance the error correction performance. Simulation results have validated the superiority of our scheme in terms of packet error rate for the AWGN channel.

Recently, the joint source-channel coding schemes based on analog mappings have gained prominence. Their simplicity and low delay compared to other coding strategies make them more suitable for real-time applications. In this work, we propose a novel joint source-channel coding scheme, based also on analog mappings, for a point-to-point communication channel with side information at the receiver (also known as Wyner-Ziv scenario).

An optimal bit rate allocation algorithm for image compressed with SPIHT is proposed. A threshold-based transmission scheme of SPIHT bit streams and a rate optimization algorithm based on threshold after analyzing the characteristics of SPIHT bit stream are developed in this paper. Simulation results show that, the proposed technical solution is better than the traditional bit stream allocation schemes in terms of the packet number used to decode and PSNR of reconstructed image. Therefore, the scheme is more potential and practical for future efficient and reliable wireless multimedia communication systems.

This paper considers the Softcast joint source-channel video coding scheme for data transmission over parallel channels with different power constraints and noise characteristics, typical in DSL or PLT channels. To minimize the mean square error at receiver, an optimal precoding matrix design problem has to be solved, which requires the solution of an inverse eigenvalue problem. Such solution is taken from the MIMO channel precoder design literature. Alternative suboptimal precoding matrices are also proposed and analyzed, showing the efficiency of the optimal precoding matrix within Softcast, which provides gains increasing with the encoded video quality.
