This paper deals with lossy joint source-channel coding for transmitting memoryless sources over AWGN channels. The scheme is based on the geometrical interpretation of communication by Kotel'nikov and Shannon where amplitude-continuous, time-discrete source samples are mapped directly onto the channel using curves or planes. The source and channel spaces can have different dimensions and thereby achieving either compression or error control, depending on whether the source bandwidth is smaller or larger than the channel bandwidth. We present a general theory for 1:N and M:1 dimension changing mappings, and provide two examples for a Gaussian source and channel where we optimize both a 2:1 bandwidth-reducing and a 1:2 bandwidth-expanding mapping. Both examples show high spectral efficiency and provide both graceful degradation and improvement for imperfect channel state information at the transmitter.

Deep joint source-channel coding for Adaptive Image Transmission Over MIMO channels

We introduce a vision transformer (ViT)-based deep joint source and channel coding (DeepJSCC) scheme for wireless image transmission over multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels, called DeepJSCC-MIMO. We employ DeepJSCC-MIMO in both open-loop and closed-loop MIMO systems. The novel DeepJSCC-MIMO architecture surpasses the classical separation-based benchmarks, while exhibiting robustness to channel estimation errors and flexibility in adapting to diverse channel conditions and antenna configurations without requiring retraining. Specifically, by harnessing the self-attention mechanism of the ViT, DeepJSCC-MIMO intelligently learns feature mapping and power allocation strategies tailored to the unique characteristics of the source image and prevailing channel conditions. Extensive numerical experiments validate the significant improvements in both distortion quality and perceptual quality achieved by DeepJSCC-MIMO for both open-loop and closed-loop MIMO systems across a wide range of scenarios. Moreover, DeepJSCC-MIMO exhibits robustness to varying channel conditions, channel estimation errors, and different antenna numbers, making it an appealing technology for emerging semantic communication systems.

Energy-Limited joint source-channel coding via Analog Pulse Position Modulation

We study the problem of transmitting a source sample with minimum distortion over an infinite-bandwidth additive white Gaussian noise channel under an energy constraint. To that end, we construct a joint source-channel coding scheme using analog pulse position modulation (PPM) and bound its quadratic distortion. We show that this scheme outperforms existing techniques, since its quadratic distortion attains both the exponential and polynomial decay orders of Burnashev's outer bound. We supplement our theoretical results with numerical simulations and comparison to existing schemes.

Transport of wireless video using separate, concatenated, and joint source-channel coding

Transmission of video over time-varying wireless communication channels can benefit from the use of joint source-channel (JSC) coding methods. In this paper, we survey relevant research in JSC code design and discuss how this work can be used for video compression and transmission. A main focus is the use of estimation-based techniques to take advantage of the residual redundancy present at the output of the source encoder. As noted in recent work, the combination of the source encoder and channel carl often be modeled as a hidden Markov model. This statistical framework is the basis for state estimation and minimum mean-square error estimation procedures for. JSC decoding, and it can also be used to develop channel state and channel parameter estimation methods. We discuss these approaches, along with work that also incorporates modulation, channel coding, and rate allocation within the JSC design. The integration of these methods into video compression standards is considered.

The joint source-channel coding problem is considered. The joint source-channel coding theorem reveals the existence of a code for the pair of the source and the channel under the condition that the error probability is smaller than or equal to epsilon asymptotically. The separation theorem guarantees that we can achieve the optimal coding performance by using the two-stage coding. In the case that epsilon = 0, Han showed the joint source-channel coding theorem and the separation theorem for general sources and channels. Furthermore the epsilon-coding theorem (0 <= epsilon < 1) in the similar setting was studied. However, the separation theorem was not revealed since it is difficult in general. So we consider the separation theorem in this setting.

An estimation setting is considered, where a number of sensors transmit their observations of a physical phenomenon, described by one or more random variables, to a sink over noisy communication channels. The goal is to minimize a quadratic distortion measure (Minimum Mean Square Error - MMSE) under a global power constraint on the sensors' transmissions. Linear MMSE encoders and decoders, parametrically optimized in encoders' gains, Shannon-Kotel'nikov mappings, and nonlinear parametric functional approximators (neural networks) are investigated and numerically compared, highlighting subtle differences in sensitivity and achievable performance.

The Dispersion of Mismatched joint source-channel coding for Arbitrary sources and Additive channels

We consider a joint source channel coding (JSCC) problem in which we desire to transmit an arbitrary memory-less source over an arbitrary additive channel. We propose a mismatched coding architecture that consists of Gaussian code-books for both the source reproduction sequences and channel codewords. The natural nearest neighbor encoder and decoder, however, need to be judiciously modified to obtain the highest communication rates at finite blocklength. In particular, we consider an unequal error protection scheme in which all sources are partitioned into disjoint power-type classes. We also regularize the nearest neighbor decoder so that an appropriate measure of the size of each power type class is taken into account in the decoding strategy. For such an architecture, we derive ensemble-tight second-order and moderate deviations results. Our first-order (optimal bandwidth expansion ratio) result generalizes the seminal results by Lapidoth (1996 and 1997). The dispersion of our JSCC scheme is a linear combination of the mismatched dispersions for the channel coding saddle-point problem by Scarlett, Tan, and Durisi (2017) and the rate-distortion saddle-point problem by the present authors, thus also generalizing these results.

In this paper, nonlinear distributed joint source-channel coding (JSCC) schemes for transmission of multivariate Gaussian sources over a Gaussian multiple access channel are proposed and analyzed. The main contribution is a zero-delay JSCC named Distributed Quantizer Linear Coder (DQLC), which performs relatively close the information theoretical bounds, improves when the correlation among the sources increases, and does not level off as the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) becomes large. Therefore it outperforms any linear solution for sufficiently large SNR. Further an extension of DQLC to an arbitrary code length named Vector Quantizer Linear Coder (VQLC) is analyzed. The VQLC closes in on the performance upper bound as the code length increases and can potentially achieve the bound for any number of independent sources. The VQLC leaves a gap to the bound whenever the sources are correlated, however. JSCC achieving the bound for arbitrary correlation has been found for the bivariate case, but that solution is significantly outperformed by the DQLC/VQLC when there is a low delay constraint. This indicates that different approaches are needed to perform close to the bounds when the code length is high and low. The VQLC/DQLC also apply for bandwidth compression of a multivariate Gaussian transmitted on point-to-point links.

joint source-channel coding schemes based on analog mappings for point-to-point channels have recently gained attention for their simplicity and low delay. In this paper, these schemes are extended either to scenarios with or without side information at the decoders to transmit multiple descriptions of a Gaussian source over independent parallel channels. They are based on a lattice scaling approach together with bandwidth reduction analog mappings adapted for this multiple description scenario. The rationale behind lattice scaling is to improve performance through band-width expansion. Another important contribution of this paper is the proof of the separation theorem for the communication scenario of multiple description with side information at the decoders. This proof allows us to compare the performance of the proposed schemes with the theoretical limits when considering AWGN channels. Finally, when the channels are parallel slow-fading Rayleigh, the proposed schemes are optimal in terms of distortion exponent.

Most modern communication systems rely on separate source encoding and channel encoding schemes to transmit data. Despite the long-lasting success of separate schemes, joint source channel coding schemes have been proven to outperform separate schemes in applications such as video communications. The task of this research is to develop a joint source-channel coding scheme that mitigates some of the limitations of current separate coding schemes. My research will attempt to leverage recent advances in machine/deep learning techniques to develop resilient schemes that do not depend on explicit codes for compression and error correction but automatically learn end-to-end mapping schemes for source signals. The success of the developed scheme will depend on its ability to correctly approximate an input vector under inconsistent channel conditions.
