Industry 4.0 brought digital technology changes at a rate unparalleled to the past. Consequential to such change, the importance of a digitally literate society is emphasized. Digital literacy is, however, vast and subject to the fast-paced changes of Industry 4.0. The challenge then lies in learning and developing digital literacy. knowledge visualization (KV) is considered a means to address this challenge, through its use of visual mechanisms to transfer complex insights. The purpose of the study was to identify factors of KV that, if addressed, can facilitate successful knowledge creation and transfer in a digital literacy learning and development process. We employed a systematic review of existing literature to reveal several critical success factors (CSFs) of KV towards digital literacy learning and development. The KVCSFs were presented in an online questionnaire to respondents to rank and possibly expose additional CSFs. The study produced 20 kV CSFs toward digital literacy learning and development, that can serve as a guide for KV in future digital literacy learning and development endeavors.

Text2Simulate: A Scientific knowledge visualization Technique for Generating Visual Simulations from Textual knowledge

Recent research has developed knowledge visualization techniques for generating interactive visualizations from textual knowledge. However, when applied, these techniques do not generate precise semantic visual representations, which is imperative for domains that require an accurate visual representation of spatial attributes and relationships between objects of discourse in explicit knowledge. Therefore, this work presents a Text-to-Simulation knowledge visualization (TSKV) technique for generating visual simulations from domain knowledge by developing a rule-based classifier to improve natural language processing, and a Spatial Ordering (SO) algorithm to solve the identified challenge. A system architecture was developed to structurally model the components of the TSKV technique and implemented using a knowledge visualization application called 'Text2Simulate'. A quantitative evaluation of the application was carried out to test for accuracy using modified existing information visualization evaluation criteria. Object Inclusion (OI), Object-Attribute Visibility (OAV), Relative Positioning (RP), and Exact Visual Representation (EVR) criteria were modified to include Object's Motion (OM) metric for quantitative evaluation of generated visual simulations. Evaluation for accuracy on generated simulation results were 90.1, 84.0, 90.1, 90.0, and 96.0% for OI, OAV, OM, RP, and EVR criteria respectively. User evaluation was conducted to measure system effectiveness and user satisfaction which showed that all the participants were satisfied well above average. These generated results showed an improved semantic quality of visualized knowledge due to the improved classification of spatial attributes and relationships from textual knowledge. This technique could be adopted during the development of electronic learning applications for improved understanding and desirable actions.

Rapid increase of data in the current digital age has led to an unprecedented rate of knowledge acquisition while the half-life of knowledge decreases. Communication and transfer of knowledge is a challenging and time-consuming task, especially when using the written word. Visual representation of knowledge is superior to verbal and written communication but has a high level of difficulty and cost regarding the maintenance of the visualizations, the reification of invalid views and the possibility of misinterpretation that could mislead or manipulate users. Therefore, the aim of this study is to provide a checklist of knowledge visualization success factors to guide designers in creating effective visualizations with maximum communicative power. The checklist of knowledge visualization success factors was developed through a document analysis where 25 success factors were identified. The 25 success factors were grouped according to the why, what, for whom, and how of knowledge before a questionnaire was distributed to software engineering professionals to validate and triangulate the findings. The use of the checklist provides designers with a list of knowledge visualization success factors to be considered to improve the effectiveness of the visualization.

Choosing optimal means of knowledge visualization based on eye tracking for online education

In online education, the appropriate choice of means of knowledge visualization can reduce cognitive load and improve cognitive efficiency. However, no universal basis for selection can cause confusion in the pedagogical context. This study used the revised Bloom's taxonomy to combine the types of knowledge with cognitive goals. We used a course on marketing research as an example to summarize the choices for visualizing factual knowledge (FK), conceptual knowledge (CK), procedural knowledge (PK), and metacognitive knowledge (MK) through four experiments. Visualized cognitive stages were used to determine the cognitive efficiencies of visualization for different knowledge types. In this stage, eye tracking is used for collecting eye movement indicators to measure cognitive load. The cognitive goals stage is used to get cognitive goals of the means of knowledge visualization. Combining the two stages, we get the conclusions as follows: Teachers and students can mostly benefit from presenting FK and CK points via mind maps. Using mind maps to teach FK online could be indirectly beneficial for improving students' creativity. Concept maps may be chosen for this point if the linked knowledge points are PK and the achievement of the analytical objective is emphasized in the student's knowledge points. The flowchart can be used to display PK, while timelines could be utilized if the PK point is to be presented in a temporal dimension. Teachers should choose the curve area chart to display MK. A pie chart might be chosen and added more instructions. The findings suggest that mind maps are very effective as a means of knowledge visualization in online education. In the meantime, it suggests that overly simplistic graphs increase cognitive load, while it also raises the possibility that redundant information in the text may increase cognitive load.

Aiming at the problem of cognitive mismatch between the knowledge structure of the ordinary elderly and medical professionals, health knowledge visualization is used to help the elderly understand vague medical information clearly. Based on the literature research of domestic senile diseases, a study of optimizing medical report of urine testing was conducted, and the information display interface before and after the redesign is compared. The new medical treatment can make the people of ordinary elderly know their physical conditions more intuitively and comprehensively by health knowledge visualization, like providing the cartoon diagram and the color expression in accordance with cognitive limitations of the elderly. The user interface of new medical report can also effectively provide the elderly immediate precautions according to their actual needs of health supervision. The goal is to improve the efficiency and quality of decision-sharing for the elderly and to improve the therapeutic experience.

Exploring knowledge visualization in the digital age: an analysis of benefits and risks

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the main benefits and risks of knowledge visualization in the current digital age. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on a qualitative and explorative research to frame the benefits and risks of knowledge visualization. The emerging views of 57 small and medium-sized entrepreneurs (SMEs) managers are examined. Findings The findings reveal both benefits and risks related to knowledge visualization. The two aggregate dimensions (i.e. benefits and risks) are supported by six second-order and five second-order categories, respectively. On one side, the main benefits highlighted in the study are related to: stakeholder engagement, flexibility, knowledge transfer, signaling role, agility and interactivity;on the other side, the risks identified are related to: complexity, absorptive capacity, divergences, capabilities and ineffectiveness. Originality/value The research highlights novel insights in the emerging field of knowledge visualization and extends current literature. It provides useful implication from both a theoretical and practical point of view.

Integrated knowledge visualization and the enterprise digital twin system for supporting strategic management decision

Purpose This paper proposes an integrated knowledge visualization and digital twin system for supporting strategic management decisions. The concepts and applications of strategic architecture have been illustrated with a concrete real-world case study and decision rules of using the strategic digital twin management decision system (SDMDS) as a more visualized, adaptive and effective model for decision-making. Design/methodology/approach This paper integrates the concepts of mental and computer models and examines a real case's business operations by applying system dynamics modelling and digital technologies. The enterprise digital twin system with displaying real-world data and simulations for future scenarios demonstrates an improved process of strategic decision-making in the digital age. Findings The findings reveal that data analytics and the visualized enterprise digital twin system offer better practices for strategic management decisions in the dynamic and constantly changing business world by providing a constant and frequent adjustment on every decision that affects how the business performs over both operational and strategic timescales. Originality/value In the digital age and dynamic business environment, the proposed strategic architecture and managerial digital twin system converts the existing conceptual models into an advanced operational model. It can facilitate the development of knowledge visualization and become a more adaptive and effective model for supporting real-time management decision-making by dealing with the complicated dependence of constant flow of data input, output and the feedback loop across business units and boundaries.

A knowledge visualization approach to identify and discovery inner areas: a pilot application in the province of Lecce

Purpose The paper aims to propose a knowledge visualization approach and algorithm to support public decision makers to define the inner areas, which represents a strategic topic in the European debate about territorial inequality and development. Design/methodology/approach The study has been developed by following the design science research, which includes six steps: problem identification and motivation;identification of the objectives for a solution;design and development;demonstration;evaluation;and communication. As for the design and development step, the proposed approach and algorithm ground on association mining to discover hidden relationships existing among municipalities. They have been applied to analyse the 97 municipalities of the Lecce province, and each municipality has been described through 30 multi-domain indicators organized into seven categories, whose data have been collected from institutional datasets, local sources or web-scraping process. Findings A set of complementary analyses has been generated through the construction of dynamic and interactive knowledge maps that show "similar" municipalities according to the indicators selected. Originality/value The approach and algorithm proposed allow discovering similarities existing among distinct municipalities, based on the analysis of a set of multi-domain indicators. The approach may complement or completely substitute the existing ones used to define inner areas, thus overcoming both the methodological limits of the "top-down" line imposed by the central legislator, and the "bottom-up" paradox consisting in the illusion that single (and often small) towns have the economic and cognitive resources necessary to implement effective territorial mapping and development strategies. In such a way, policy makers can be aware on similarities existing among distinct towns and can thus share cognitive and financial resources to define a common plan and a set of practices for territorial development.

Power system transient voltage vulnerability assessment based on knowledge visualization of CNN

Because of the increasing proportion of grid-connected converters, the transient voltage problem has increased the risk of the secure and stable operation of power systems. As the extension of transient voltage stability assessment (TVSA), transient voltage vulnerability assessment is the key technique to detect the crucial elements which can cause the insecurity risk of power system transient voltage. Although deep learning-based TVSA models have demonstrated the high accuracy, it is more important to display the knowledge learnt by the models and utilize it to recognize the weakness of transient voltage. This paper presents a transient voltage vulnerability assessment method by knowledge visualization of convolutional neural network (CNN). First, the image-form sample construction method is proposed to characterize the power system operating condition, which prepares for training CNN-based TVSA model. Then, the knowledge in TVSA model is visualized based on Gradientweighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) and Activation Maximization (AM) algorithms, which is analyzed from the perspective of power system stability. Finally, a comprehensive vulnerability indicator is proposed for identify the weakness of transient voltage, which combines the knowledge inside the TVSA model and the indicators with clear physical meaning. Simulation results of the New England 39-bus test system and the real Shandong provincial power grid in China demonstrate that the visualization makes the model more reliable and the proposed method can accurately identify the vulnerable branches.

Leveraging knowledge discovery and knowledge visualization to define the "inner areas": an application to an Italian province

Purpose Starting from a critical analysis of the main criteria currently used to identify marginal areas, this paper aims to propose a new classification model of such territories by leveraging knowledge discovery approaches and knowledge visualization techniques, which represent a fundamental pillar in the knowledge-based urban development process. Design/methodology/approach The methodology adopted in this study relies on the design science research, which includes five steps: problem identification, objective definition, solution design and development, demonstration and evaluation. Findings Results demonstrate how to exploit knowledge discovery and visualization to obtain multiple mappings of inner areas, in the aim to identify good practices and optimize resources to set up more effective territorial development strategies and plans. The proposed approach overcomes the traditional way adopted to map inner areas that uses a single indicator (i.e. the distance between a municipality and the nearest pole where it is possible to access to education, health and transportation services) and leverages seven groups of indicators that represent the distinguishing features of territories (territorial capital, social costs, citizenship, geo-demography, economy, innovation and sustainable development). Research limitations/implications The proposed model could be enriched by new variables, whose value can be collected by official sources and stakeholders engaged to provide both structured and unstructured data. Also, another enhancement could be the development of a cross-algorithms comparison that may reveal useful to suggest which algorithm can better suit the needs of policy makers or practitioners. Practical implications This study sets the ground for proposing a decision support tool that policy makers can use to classify in a new way the inner areas, thus overcoming the current approach and leveraging the distinguishing features of territories.
