Recognition of process patterns for BIM-based construction schedules

Construction scheduling is a very demanding and time intensive process. Building information modeling (BIM) is becoming increasingly important for planning and scheduling, as it provides significant support for this difficult assignment. Further improvements can be achieved by applying predefined process templates for BIM-based schedules. It can reduce the planning time and thus increase the productivity. However, a manual definition of proper and application-specific process templates is very challenging. The automatic detection of recurring similar configurations of construction processes, called process patterns, would greatly support this complex task. Identified process riatterns can be subsequently generalized, supporting the design of process templates. This contribution presents an overall concept for process pattern recognition in BIM-based construction schedules by applying graph-based methods. Due to the fact that graph matching algorithms are in general very time- and resource-consuming, an indexing technique based on features is used to solve this problem more efficiently. The paper focuses on the estimation of similarity in construction schedules, describing feature-based methods and similarity measure definitions in detail. Another emphasis is the preparation of schedules for the recognition of process patterns, including decomposition of schedules into smaller parts, referred to as subschedules, and normalization of features. The potential of this concept is demonstrated by two different case studies. The proper results of the evaluation show that the proposed method and similarity metrics are sufficient for the recognition of process patterns in construction schedules. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. In this Special Issue, four extended versions of selected contributions of the 2015 edition of the Workshop of European Group for Intelligent Computing in Engineering (EG-ICE) are presented. The selected papers span a variety of topics ranging from machine learning applications to weather forecast for potentially hazardous conditions affecting the built environment, topological optimization of Finite Element simulations of structural building components, the recognition of process patterns in construction schedules to the intelligent compression and efficient storage of large point cloud data sets. Reactive scheduling framework based on domain knowledge and constraint programming

Industrial environments frequently face disruptive events. This contribution presents a support framework, aimed at addressing the repair-based reactive scheduling problem. It is based on an explicit object-oriented domain representation and a constraint programming (CP) approach. When an unforeseen event occurs, the framework captures the in-progress agenda status, as well as the event effect on it. based on this information, a rescheduling problem specification is developed. Tasks to be rearranged are recognized and the set of the most suitable rescheduling action types (e.g. shift-jump, reassign, freeze) is identified. Since a given specification may lead to several solutions, the second stage relies on a CP model to address the problem just defined. To create such model, action types are automatically transformed into constraints. Provided that good quality schedules can be reached in low CPU times, alternative solution scenarios focusing on stability and regular performance measures can be posed for each problem. scheduling problems are becoming more and more complex everyday. This makes the current rules and algorithms difficult to comply with the requirements. New machines with the capabilities of processing more than one jobs is being developed. Sometimes one job is divided into parts and processed by more than one machine at the same time. These make the current algorithms insufficient. Artificial intelligence technologies, especially expert systems are proven to deal with such dynamic complex problems in several domains. In this study, an example of such a complex problem is introduced and knowledge-based scheduling for these kind of problems is elaborated with a real life industrial example.

A scheduling system shall support the human scheduler in his daily work in creating and revising schedules of the production. Several criteria influence the requirements for such a system, e.g., the area of production and the preferences of the producing company as well as the need for presentation of specific information and sophisticated scheduling algorithms. Most of the existing scheduling systems have been built from scratch. To improve the building of scheduling systems an intelligent support system for the implementation of hybrid scheduling systems is presented which integrates different scheduling techniques, knowledge about their appropriateness for specific problem scenarios and knowledge about the design of scheduling systems. Using this knowledge it helps the user designing adequate scheduling systems for different application scenarios.

Decisions pertaining to the planning and scheduling of critical resources such as operating rooms (OR's) are among the most critical day-to-day problems faced by hospitals. These decisions impact not only the quality of care to patients but also the crucial relationship between the hospital and the physicians who practice there. OR scheduling is typically carried out by highly experienced staff who understand the idiosyncrasies of the particular environment. Due to the complexity of the problem and the dynamic nature of the environment, the effectiveness of general-purpose scheduling systems has been limited in such domains. In this paper, we describe the scheduling problem in a large cardiac center and present a knowledge-based approach for solving the problem. Our system-development efforts were based on an in-depth study of the scheduling problem using a protocol analysis technique. This paper presents a description of the scheduling problem at the cardiac center in the form of a case study and derives a system architecture that integrates principles of opportunistic planning and reason maintenance. The opportunism in our approach allows for incremental schedule construction, while the reason maintenance mechanism ensures that the system keeps track of reasons for scheduling decisions and revises the schedule whenever conflicts or new opportunities for schedule improvement arise.

An intelligent operations scheduling system in a job shop

scheduling jobs effectively under the consideration of actual loads on machines is one of the most complicated task;in production control. The conventional scheduling methods fail because of the complexity of the tasks. To deal with the complexity, knowledge-based approaches to job shop scheduling have been attempted. This paper presents an interactive scheduling expert system, IOSS (Intelligent Operations scheduling System), which performs both predictive and reactive scheduling. IOSS combines the knowledge-based scheduling method with the interactive scheduling method to generate a feasible schedule and to revise the existing schedule. It is based on opportunistic and interactive repair based problem solving within a blackboard architecture. To handle conflicting events, heuristics are applied from the order point of view. Flexible reaction management is possible while keeping the changes in the generated schedule to a minimum by adjusting the schedule for tardy operations or changes in job shop status. The effectiveness of the proposed concept is demonstrated by applying the developed system to an example case.
