An adaptive filter is a digital filter that self adjusts its transfer function according to an optimizing algorithm which is most frequently Least Mean Square (lms) algorithm. Due to the complexity of adaptive filtering most digital filters are FIR filter. There are numerous applications of adaptive filters like noise cancellations, echo cancellation, system identification, inverse system modeling, adaptive beam-forming etc. In this research article, adaptive lms algorithm has been used for unknown system identification. The system identification is a category of adaptive filtering which find its numerous applications in diverse field like communication, image processing, speech processing etc.

In this paper, a novel variable multiple step-size least mean square (VMSSlms) adaptive filter algorithm with the l(0)-norm constraint is proposed, which both allows the step-size to vary for different taps and includes a sparsity constraint in the cost function. When channel changes suddenly, the filter can track the specific tap-weight fast to adapt to the variation of the channel. The l(0)-norm constraint can take advantage of the sparse property, thus it can improve the performance of the sparse channel estimation. Simulations show that compared with the existing algorithms, the proposed algorithm performs better in the sparse channels with a faster convergence rate and a lower misadjustment. System identification tests with the proposed algorithm for the channel obtained from South ocean also show superior performance.

Fractional calculus is a powerful mathematical tool for describing memory properties and intermediate processes, integrating it with lms algorithm to fully exploit the historical information in the process of weight adjustment can effectively improve the convergence performance and steady-state performance of lms algorithm. In this paper, we exhaustively review the development of fractional order lms algorithms (FOlmss) in the past decade, discusses their properties, advantages and disadvantages. Then we apply these algorithms to sinusoidal signal denoising, from the perspective of output signal variance to measure the denoising effect of various FOlmss. Finally, we provide some suggestions for the future research direction of FOlms in the hope of its better development.

lms algorithm floating point arithmetic in hardware implementation system takes up more resources, hardware running slow and can not meet the real-time requirements of the system. So we need fixed-point arithmetic for lms algorithm. Doing algorithm modeling with System Generator in Simulink environment will be implement in ISE and MATLAB. We can make adjustments and do the corresponding design and simulation for fixed-point methods. Simulation results show that fixed-point arithmetic module can cellation noise well. But compared with floating-point arithmetic modules, there are a little errors. lms algorithm module can achieve lms algorithm effectively. In the Simulink environment, it lay a good foundation for complex system fixed-point implementation.

Non -negative constraints arise in certain system identification problems when the systems to be identified have only positive coefficients. This paper studies the stochastic behavior of modified lms and Nlms algorithms, modified so as to only allow adaptation with positive coefficients. The mean and second moment behavior of these algorithms are analyzed for Gaussian inputs. Excellent agreement is demonstrated between the theory and Monte Carlo simulations for the lms algorithm.

This paper presents a comparative study of beamforming techniques using least mean square (lms) algorithm and its variants, like, normalized least mean square (Nlms) algorithm and sign least mean square (Slms) algorithm. The accuracy of beam generation toward the direction of arrival (DoA) and null generation toward the interferer, depends on the value of step size parameter used in the algorithm. Beamwidth and side lobe levels (SLL) are also compared for these three algorithms.

lms algorithm based on the S-function has a small amount of calculation, faster convergence rate and good tracking properties for time-varying systems. But when the signal's error is small, the step factor changes too fast, system identification is not quick enough and the controllable variables are few. To solve the shortcomings, an improved S-function algorithm has been proposed. Simulation results show that the convergence rate of the algorithm is superior to other improved algorithms, and the tracking property for the time-varying system is better than the improved normalized lms algorithms. The algorithm proposed in this paper not only overcomes the discrepancy between the signal's error and step factor, but also makes the algorithm more flexible by introducing a new controllable variable.

In this paper we introduce an Modified Clipped lms (MClms) algorithm with a variable step size. In the MClms algorithm two parameters, the step size and the threshold control the convergence rate of the adaptive filter coefficients and also determine the final mean-square error. The computational complexity decreased dramatically by a large threshold. However, this selection results in a low convergence rate. Since the convergence time is inversely proportional to the step size, a large step size is often selected for fast convergence. But a large step size results in an increased final mean square error. Therefore in this paper we choose a large threshold and propose a variable step size for the MClms algorithm. The advantages of this proposed variable step size and a large threshold selection are that the computation complexity is low, final mean square error is low and that the convergence is fast.

The ability to extract high resolution and valid ECG signals from contaminated recordings is an important subject in the biotelemetry systems. During ECG acquisition several artefacts strongly degrades the signal quality. The dominant artefacts encountered in ECG signal such as Power Line Interference, Muscle Artefacts, Baseline Wander, Electrode Motion Artefacts;and channel noise generated during transmission. The tiny features of ECG signal are masked due to these noises. To track random variations in noisy signals, the adaptive filter is used. In this paper, we proposed Dead Zone Leaky Least Mean Square algorithm, Leaky Least Mean Froth algorithm and Median Leaky lms algorithms to remove PLI and EM artefacts from ECG signals. Based on these algorithms, we derived some sign based algorithms for less computational complexity. We compare the proposed algorithms with lms algorithm, which shows better performance in weight drift problem, round off error and low steady state error. The simulation results show that Dead Zone Leaky lms algorithm gives good correlation factor and SNR ratio.

This paper presents the Variable Step Size Least Mean Square algorithm formulated in frequency domain by taking the (Fast Fourier Transform) FFT of signal obtained from filter. This way the algorithms performed better than its implementation in time domain in terms of Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR). The algorithms implemented in MATLAB with different colored noise surroundings. To evaluate the performance of the algorithm its comparison has been done with time domain. The algorithm has given 5-44% increased SNR compared to that implemented in time domain with different type of colored noises. The algorithm has also been tested in frequency domain for different step sizes.
