Describes study that investigated whether the use of logo accelerates cognitive development of five- and seven-year-old kindergarten students as measured by Piagetian-based tests of conservation of length, number, and ability to identify geometric shapes. Pretests and posttests are described and directions for future research are given. (Author/LRW)

Discusses the impact of computer programing instruction on cognitive skills and suggests two mechanisms of transfer--low road, from practice, and high road, from generalization. Previous research that tried to measure transfer from programing is reviewed, six categories in which transfer might occur are presented, and 71 references are provided. (Author/LRW)

More than a decade has elapsed since Papert and his MIT colleagues combined cybernetic and Piagetian concepts into a user-friendly computer program called logo; and five years have elapsed since Papert, in his book Mindstorms, extolled the virtues of logo, arguing that children who experienced logo learned much more than a computer language—they learned powerful ideas, skills, and heuristics as well. This paper examines the current state of logo and logo research and attempts to come to some conclusions about the efficacy of logo as a research and teaching tool. .overlined { text-decoration: overline; } .struck { text-decoration:line-through; } .underlined { text-decoration:underline; } .doubleUnderlined { text-decoration:underline;border-bottom:1px solid #000; } Enhanced Article (HTML) Get PDF (516K)Get PDF (516K) More content like thisFind more content: like this articleFind more content written by: J O Michayluk

Making a good programming environment for beginning programmers is an enterprise which can exploit the strong connections between machine learning and human learning. Applying what we know about teaching and learning to improve the programming environment can result in a system which allows beginners to more readily acquire programming skills.

Fatimata Sylla's computer program in urban Dakar Senegal West Africa, called logo, and Malamin O. Sanko's program in rural up-country communities in The Gambia West Africa, called Action Aid, are examined and compared. These computer programs are different in some aspects, but both programs emphasize learning by doing.

Describes "Josef," a robot programinglanguage similar to the logo turtle language, which has been designed as an instructional system through which the algorithmic problem-solving skills required in computer programing can be developed and tested in a controlled learning environment. Four figures and a reference list are included. (JL)
