An alternative to traditional software rehosting

This paper will describe one alternative to rehosting TPS software to newer computer platforms. It will describe the solution that Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) used to solve a problem with re-engineering legacy software into a modern object-oriented language. The advantages gained by this method are more advanced instruction to the operator (such as pictures and movies), flexible reporting scheme to diagnose system problems, and ease of software maintenance. This solution uses commercially available products including National Instruments (TM) TestStand (TM) and LabVIEW (TM) and Nflcrosoft (R) Visual Basic (R). The system is a four-tiered architecture to drive all test execution. The user interface is written in Visual Basic and allows the user to interact with the test execution when needed. This user interface in turn calls tests that are written in TestStand, and finally the individual tests call driver functions written in LabVIEW. A database serves as a repository for all test results, displays, and test limits. The use of this database allows for easy querying of measurement data to analyze trends in failures that help diagnose specific problems. By using this database, all test limits and test displays are contained in one central location that enables engineers to change these displays and limits on the fly without needing to change or even understand any test code. One other benefit of this data containment is that all Government classified data is separated out of the code and stored as one file, instead of in various locations as it was in the original source code.

National Instruments records a hit with ELVIS

For several years, national instru-ments has assumed a leadership role in thefield of data-acquisition (DAQhard-ware and software, their DAQ boares, driver software, andLabView application software have been used in applications throughout all branches of engineeringand science. For educational purposes, such systems provide many benefits, including the opportunityto teach students about state-of-the-art industry-standard hardware and software. This year, theyhave gone a step further by making two key product innovations available: LabView 7 Express, thelatest edition of their flagship software, and the Educational laboratory virtual instrumentationSuite (ELVIS), a new prototyping and development system that takes full advantage of the newsoftware's power and flexibility.

Design of a PC-based system for time-domain and spectral analysis of heart rate variability

Investigation of heart rate variability is the subject of considerable interest in physiology, clinical medicine, and clinical pharmacology. The functional assessment of the autonomic nerve system by observation of its main actors, the sympathetic and parasympathetic branch, is emphasizing the importance of autonomic regulation under different physiological circumstances, in several disease states, and under drug therapy. This paper describes a PC-based system designed with LabView that performs time-domain and frequency-domain analyses of heart rate variability as suggested by the guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology and the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology. Examples for heart rate variability are given for different physiological states along with an analysis and evaluation by the system described. (C) 1999 Academic Press.

The concept and development of LabVIEW (laboratory virtual Instrument engineering workbench), a virtual instrument (VI) that provides a simple, graphical way to set up and run numerous instruments on a Mackintosh PC, are described. The first concept basic to LabVIEW had its roots in a large test system comprised of programmable signal sources compatible with IEEE-488 interface specifications, and switching matrices and measurement instruments controlled by a minicomputer. The test system\'s strength was its flexibility, which it owed to its several levels of user interfaces. This flexible configuration was refined into the notion of instrumentation as a hierarchy of virtual instruments in which all VIs at all levels had the same type of construction. Another characteristic was that each VI have its own user interface. The final conceptual element was the use of loop data-flow structures as the technique used by an engineer to construct and run his or her own VIs. Problems encountered in the development of LabVIEW and the solutions used are discussed.

Graphical computing in the undergraduate laboratory: Teaching and interfacing with LabVIEW

We describe the development and implementation of an undergraduate physics laboratory course based on National Instruments' LabVIEW application. LabVIEW, a graphical programming language, provides an intuitive interface with which to teach fundamental computer-based data acquisition techniques. To convey the importance of these techniques in modem experimental physics, during our course the students complete a variety of tasks and experiments based around LabVIEW virtual instruments that they have constructed. Furthermore, LabVIEW is a powerful signal processing and waveform, analysis tool, it may be used to reinforce core physics concepts taught in an analytical fashion in other courses. Foremost among these is Fourier analysis. We discuss the efficacy of LabVIEW as a pedagogical tool in a number of Fourier-related areas. Other important pure and applied physics topics covered in our LabVIEW course and briefly described here include resonance, filtering and lock-in techniques, thermal diffusivity, chaos, and optical absorption in solids. A test system for free-field qualification of anechoic chambers

Qualification of anechoic and hemi-anechoic chambers is intended to demonstrate that a chamber adequately supports free-field conditions for a given test sample. However, the common practice of measuring widely spaced points along a traverse line is an inadequate measure of inverse square law performance, particularly for frequencies at and above 1000 Hz. On the other hand, continuous traverses yield a more complete picture of the capabilities and limitations of an anechoic space. A new qualification measurement system has been developed at Georgia Tech to allow for easily repeatable, automated continuous traverse measurements. The highly portable system makes use of Labview(TM) and MATLAB(TM) tools to perform, control and analyze a complete traverse test, giving real-time access to the data and immediate processing and analysis of the results. This article will describe the new system, present data taken for an anechoic chamber and demonstrate the benefits of this system over current methods.

Denis Jolivet explains how a visual inspection unit using LabVIEW with IMAQ hardware and Advanced Analysis toolkit has helped to eliminate human error while retaining test times of less than 300ms. Ensuring the quality of semiconductors is a vital step in the IC manufacturing process, and is often done by using human inspectors to visually inspect thousands of components, looking for variation or deviations. Faulty components can be identified by any number of defects such as cracks, spots, discolorations and deformations.

The HRV analysis plays an important role in health monitoring. HRV is considered as a vital parameter for cardiac assessment. This paper deals with HRV analysis using ballistocardiogram (BCG) signal. The BCG signals from some subjects are acquired using piezoelectric sensors and National Instruments data acquisition card (DAQ) and processed using National Instruments LabVIEW. HRV indices are calculated using HRV analyzer in NI Biomedical workbench. In this paper it observed that the HRV indices in subjects having tachycardia and bradycardia were showing variations.

The aim of this work is to develop a simultaneous multi user access system - READ (Remote ASIC Design and Test) that allows users to perform test and measurements remotely via clients running on mobile devices as well as on standard PCs. The system also facilitates the remote design of circuits with the PAC-Designer The system is controlled by LabVIEW and was implemented using a Data Acquisition Card from National instruments. Such systems are specially suited for manufacturing process monitoring and control. The performance of the simultaneous access was tested under load with a variable number of users. The server implements a queue that processes user's commands upon request.
