Although studies emphasized the effectiveness of analyzing data-flow coverage as opposed to branch coverage in the area of testing, there is still a lack of appropriate tools. We propose an approach to visualize data flows of programs within code editors based on the language server protocol (LSP). For this purpose, we define extensions of the LSP to increase usability in the given application. Furthermore, we present a prototype with implementations of a language server as well as the two language clients IntelliJ IDEA and Visual Studio Code. Moreover, we outline how the different components can interact effectively based on the LSP to enable the analysis and visualization of data-flows. We evaluate our prototype based on various benchmarks.

Software product lines (SPL) describe highly-variable software systems as a family of similar products that differ in terms of the features they provide. The promise of SPL engineering is to enable massive software reuse by allowing software features to be reused across a variety of different products made for several customers. However, there are some disadvantages in the extraction of SPLs from standard applications. Most notably, approaches to the development of SPLs are not supported by the base language and use a syntax and composition techniques that require a deep understanding of the tools being used. Therefore, the same features cannot be used in a different application and developers must face a steep learning curve when developing SPLs for the first time or when switching from one approach to a different one. Ultimately, this problem is due to a lack of standards in the area of SPL engineering and in the way SPLs are extracted from variability-unaware applications. In this work, we present a framework based on LSP and dubbed that aims at standardizing such a process by decoupling the refactoring operations made by the user from the effect they have on the source code. This way, the server for a specific SPL development approach can be used across several development environments that provide clients with customized refactoring options. Conversely, the developers can use the same client to refactor SPLs made according to different approaches without needing to learn the syntax of each approach. To showcase the applicability of the approach, we present an evaluation performed by refactoring four SPLs according to two different approaches: the results show that a minimal implementation of the client and server applications can be used to reduce the effort of extracting an SPL up to the 93% and that it can greatly reduce or even completely hide the implementation details from the developer, depending on the chosen approach.

Model-Driven Software Development using Domain-Specific languages (DSL) has been widely adopted throughout research and industry. The language workbenches required to efficiently build Domain-Specific languages and the associated editor support are often deeply integrated into a specific Integrated Development Environment (IDE). Thereby, the chosen Domain-Specific language workbench predicts the IDE required to use the DSL. Yet, this IDE might not be the best choice for further implementing, testing, and debugging the generated code. A case study was conducted to analyze how the language server protocol could be utilized to decouple the DSL implementation from a specific editor integrated into an IDE. First, the language server protocol capabilities are exemplified by building editor support for an Entity-DSL that is integrated into two different IDEs. Second, a SWOT analysis is carried out to identify strengths and weaknesses as well as opportunities and threats for Domain-Specific languages utilizing the language server protocol. The case study's results indicate that the language server protocol enables efficient multi-editor integration. Further, the results of the SWOT analysis imply potential benefits for cross-functional teams specifying a shared domain model.

The development of modern IDEs is still a challenging and time-consuming task, which requires implementing the support for language-specific features such as syntax highlighting or validation. When the IDE targets a graphical language, its development becomes even more complex due to the rendering and manipulation of the graphical notation symbols. To simplify the development of IDEs, the language server protocol (LSP) proposes a decoupled approach based on language-agnostic clients and language-specific servers. LSP clients communicate changes to LSP servers, which validate and store language instances. However, LSP only addresses textual languages (i.e., character as atomic unit) and neglects the support for graphical ones (i.e., nodes/edges as atomic units). In this paper, we present our vision to decouple graphical language IDEs discussing the alternatives for integrating LSP's ideas in their development. Moreover, we propose a novel LSP infrastructure to simplify the development of new graphical modeling tools, in which Web technologies may be used for editor front-ends while leveraging existing modeling frameworks to build language servers.

In the past decade, the modeling community has produced many feature-rich modeling editors and tool prototypes not only for modeling standards but particularly also for many domain-specific languages. More recently, however, web-based modeling tools have started to become increasingly popular in the industry for visualizing and editing models adhering to such languages. This new generation of modeling tools is built with web technologies and offers much more flexibility when it comes to their user experience, accessibility, reuse, and deployment options. One of the technologies behind this new generation of tools is the Graphical language server Platform (GLSP), an open-source clientserver framework hosted under the Eclipse foundation, which allows tool developers to build modern diagram editors for modeling tools that run in the browser or can be easily integrated into IDEs such as Eclipse, VS Code, or Theia. In this paper, we describe our vision for more flexible modeling tools which is based on our experiences from developing several traditional and web-based modeling tools in an industrial and academic context. With that, we aim at sparking a new line of research and innovation in the modeling community for modeling tool development practices and to explore opportunities, advantages, and limitations of web-based modeling tools, as well as bridge the gap between scientific tool prototypes and industrial tools being used in practice.

According to different studies, analyzing the data-flow coverage when testing programs is a highly effective approach to ensure software quality. However, there is a need for tools making an effective and comprehensible visualization of a program's data flow easily accessible. With Dacite, we intend to meet this need by visualizing data-flows of Java programs within multiple editing environments based on the language server protocol (LSP). We present our visualization approach and outline how we used the LSP for realizing the visualization. We evaluate Dacite based on a usability study giving insights in the effectiveness and comprehensibility of the data-flow visualization.

When using large language models (LLMs) for code translation of complex software, numerous compilation and runtime errors can occur due to insufficient context awareness. To address this issue, this paper presents a code translation method based on call graphs and bridged debuggers: TransGraph. TransGraph first obtains the call graph of the entire code project using the language server protocol, which provides a detailed description of the function call relationships in the program. Through this structured view of the code, LLMs can more effectively handle large-scale and complex codebases, significantly reducing compilation errors. Furthermore, TransGraph, combined with bridged debuggers and dynamic test case generation, significantly reduces runtime errors, overcoming the limitations of insufficient test case coverage in traditional methods. In experiments on six datasets including CodeNet and Avatar, TransGraph outperformed existing code translation methods and LLMs in terms of translation accuracy, with improvements of up to 10.2%.

Nowadays, visualization is one of the most important things an integrated development environment or any smart code editor needs to have. There are several different options when it comes to the visualization. It plays a crucial role in software development and has several important benefits, like understanding the code structure, debugging, or troubleshooting. Code visualization enhances developer productivity, facilitates collaboration, and contributes to the maintainability and scalability of software projects. It is an essential aspect of modern software development practices. In this paper, we focus on one of the most widely used code editors - Visual Studio Code - and on a core component that drives the Visual Studio Code called Monaco Editor, mainly on how they can visualize different sections of a code and their complexity when it comes to visualization. Source code visualization refers to representing code visually to enhance understanding, analysis, and communication of software systems.

Conceptual modeling is widely adopted in industrial practices, e.g., process, software, and systems modeling. Providing adequate and usable modeling tools is essential for the efficient adoption of modeling. Metamodeling platforms provide a rich set of functionalities and maturely realize state-of-the-art modeling tools. However, despite their maturity and stability, most of these platforms only slowly - if at all - leverage the full extent of functionalities and the ease of exploitation and integration enabled by web technologies. With the Graphical language server protocol (GLSP), it is now possible to realize much richer, advanced opportunities for visualizing and interacting with conceptual models. This paper presents a concept and a prototypical implementation of two advanced model visualization and interaction functionalities with the Eclipse GLSP platform: Semantic Zoom and Off-Screen Elements. We believe such advanced functionalities pave the way for a prosperous modeling future and spark innovation in modeling tool development.

The Entity Relationship model is the de-facto standard for data modeling and has been in use for a long time already. This popularity also led to the development of various tools that support ER modeling. However, these tools are often inflexible, proprietary, constrained to specific platforms, and lack advanced features like (SQL) code generation. This paper introduces the BIGER modeling tool. BIGER offers various features for flexibly specifying and visualizing conceptual ER data models. Within the VS Code IDE, the tool enables hybrid and interactive modeling through a textual editor with a custom language to specify ER elements and an accompanying view to display and modify the graphical ER model. The BIGER modeling tool is one of the first tools to incorporate the language server protocol and to be distributed through the VS Code ecosystem. Due to its web technology-based architecture, it is platform-independent and easily extensible.
