This paper describes the development of a layered structure of a multi-resolutional scalable video codec based on the Color Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees (CSPIHT) scheme. The new structure is designed in such a way that it supports the network Quality of Service (QoS) by allowing packet marking in a real-time layered multicast system with heterogeneous clients. Also, it provides (spatial) resolution/ frame rate scalability from one embedded bit stream. The codec is self-identifiable since it labels the encoded bit stream according to the resolution. We also introduce asymmetry to the CSPIHT encoder and decoder which makes it possible to decode lossy bit streams at heterogeneous clients.

WebRTC uses two simulcast schemes: the older, based on the replication of streams encoded to different qualities of the original signal (typically: video), and the newer, fully introduced this year to one of the more popular browsers, based on layered encoding. While the first solution has a well-established position in the WebRTC technology, the layered simulcast still remains in an early stage of development. The goal of this paper was to compare behavior of the two WebRTC simulcast schemes in terms of the key feature of the simulcast, i.e. its adaptability to network conditions. To achieve this goal, we wrote the WebRTC application (a simple videomonitoring software) that act as simulcast sender. The adaptability of the simulcast schemes was investigated for the case of video traffic transmitted in a heterogeneous test network (wired and wireless). As adaptability indicators, such as the throughput and packet error rate were used. Results of the simulcasting of 4K video show that in the case of infrastructural limitations only there are no significant differences between the adaptability of the stream replication simulcast and the layered simulcast. Adaptability for dynamic limitations (introduced by background traffic) was better in the case of the layered simulcast.

In this paper, we investigate various cooperative transmission techniques for hybrid and/or integrated satellite and terrestrial systems, where satellite and terrestrial components cooperates to provide high quality services. It has been reported that cooperative diversity techniques combined with space time and/or error correction coding schemes could provide appreciable diversity and additional coding gains for hybrid/integrated satellite systems. In this paper, we extend this idea, and present a few possible service scenarios and examples in order to apply hierarchical modulation and layered coding schemes in hybrid/integrated satellite system.

In conventional multicast scheme (CMS), the total throughput of multicast group is constrained by the user with the worst channel quality. In order to overcome this problem of limited throughput, we consider an opportunistic multicast scheduling (OMS) based on layered coding. A novel subcarrier and bit allocation algorithm is exploited for targeting the maximum throughput (MT) of a whole multicast group while at the same time guaranteeing the quality of services (QoS) requirements of all users. In this paper, we propose an optimal resource allocation algorithm in the downlink of OFDMA-based wireless multicast group. A two-phase suboptimal algorithm is proposed to reduce the computational complexity. Simulation results show that the performance gap between the optimal algorithm and the proposed suboptimal algorithm is quite small. The proposed algorithm significantly outperforms CMS. Moreover, it obtains more throughput than another existing algorithm.

layered coding (LC) and multiple description coding (MDC) have been proposed as two different kinds of "quality adaptation" schemes for video delivery over the current Internet or wireless networks. To combine the advantages of LC and MDC, we present a new approach - Multiple Description layered coding (MDLC), to provide reliable video communication over a wider range of network scenarios and application requirements. MDLC improves LC in that it introduces redundancy in each layer so that the chance of receiving at least one description of base layer is greatly enhanced. Though LC and MDC are each good in limit cases (e.g., long end-to-end delay for LC vs. short delay for MDC), the proposed MDLC system can address intermediate cases as well. Same as a LC system with retransmission, the MDLC system can have a feedback channel to indicate which descriptions have been correctly received. Thus a low redundancy MDLC system can be implemented with our proposed runtime packet scheduling system based on the feedback information. The goal of our scheduling algorithm is to find a proper on-line packet scheduling policy to maximize the playback quality at the decoder. Previous work on scheduling algorithms has not considered multiple decoding choices due to the redundancy between data units, because of the increase in complexity involved in considering alternate decoding paths. In this paper, we introduce a new model of Directed Acyclic HyperGraph (DAHG) to represent the data dependencies among frames and layers, as well as the data correlation between descriptions. The impact of each data unit to others is represented by messages passing along the graph with updates based on new information received. Experimental results show that the proposed system provides more robust and efficient video communication for real-time applications over lossy packet networks.

The popularity of 4K videos is on the rise. However, streaming such high-quality videos over mmWave to several users presents significant challenges due to directional communication, fluctuating channels, and high bandwidth demands. To address these challenges, this paper introduces an innovative 4K layered video multicast streaming system. We (i) develop a video quality model tailored for layered video coding, (ii) optimize resource allocation, scheduling, and beamforming based on the channel conditions of different users, and (iii) design a streaming strategy that integrates fountain code to eliminate redundancy in multicast groups, coupled with a Leaky-Bucket approach for congestion control. We implement our system on Commodity-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) WiGig devices and demonstrate its effectiveness through comprehensive testbed and emulation experiments.

Multiple description coding (MDC) has been proposed as a source coding technique that is robust to channel errors for video transmission. MDC generates multiple independent bit-streams, where the multiple bit-streams are referred to as multiple descriptions (MD). Furthermore, it enables a useful reproduction of the signal when any description is received correctly. This paper proposes a new multicast heuristic algorithm, that attempts to take the benefit of MDC properties and multiple paths, to improve the user's satisfaction for a group of heterogeneous destinations in wireless ad hoe network. Extensive simulations clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in improving the user's satisfaction irrespective of the number of destinations in the multicast group.

In this paper, resource allocation problem for multicast service in OFDM-based wireless cellular networks is investigated and a coding-based opportunistic scheduling scheme is proposed. In the proposed scheme, according to frequency resource and time resource, layered coding and erasure-correction coding are adopted, respectively. layered coding divides the data into base layer and enhancement layer, which transmits the data in different rates to maximize the system capacity;erasure-correction coding compensates for the possible packet loss due to instantaneous channel information. To complete subcarrier allocation and bit loading for the coding-based scheme, a practical algorithm is designed. As only the users' mean channel gains are required, the proposed scheme reduces the overheads required for instantaneous channel information and is suitable for a fast time-varying fading environment. Numerical results show that the coding-based scheme can get significant performance improvement compared with the scheme without coding.

In this research, a video delivery system is proposed by integrating the layered codec and the proposed corruption model. In the system, it is assumed that the base layer packets are delivered without loss since they are assigned the most reliable service level. Then, packets in the enhancement layer are analyzed with the corruption model and categorized for differentiated delivery services. The corruption model for generating the relative priority index (RPI) is extended to layered bitstreams. In addition to taking into account the initial error and the propagation error due to packet loss, the dependency between the same and different layers is reflected in the modified macroblock corruption model. In order to facilitate the prioritized delivery of the enhancement layer, the RPI-based corruption model for each packet as well as coordinated delivery of packetized video over QoS networks are investigated. Finally, a per-packet optimization framework with unequal error protection (UEP) is realized to consider both end-to-end video performance and pricing. The performance of the proposed solution is verified with extensive simulations.
