learning object repositories (LOR), also known as Open Educational repositories (OER), are proper web platforms to store educational resources such as learning objects (LOs). learning object repositories are design to make easy searching and reusing of educational resources. However, LORs great variety of available educational resources makes difficut to a user to find an LOR that suits his needs. Software Quality Indicators such as Functionality, Usability, Reliability, and Compatibility are important characteristics, according to ISO 25010 software quality norm, regarding general software use and they can be used as criteria for choosing the most suitable LOR according to user will. This work aims to present a support decision-making method for choosing the most suitable LOR to a user. This method uses the multicriteria decision-making method AHP for ranking LORs according to a user requested set of Indicators and values. Proposed method evaluation envolving different user requests shows its viability and applicability.

This paper presents a short part of a larger comparative study of national or international projects and existing websites, aiming at creating learning objects repositories and presenting themselves as environments for building virtual communities. The general description of selected sites and projects is followed by the identification of key factors, out of these accessibility to public, browsing and contributing materials, publishing rules and functions are illustrated, compared, and discussed in the paper. The authors, also the developers of one of the compared sites (Telmae), aim to help the project managers to identify critical features, which might affect the project sustainability and maintenance of the site after financial sources are restricted.

A Hybrid Recommendation Model for learning object repositories

learning objects (LOs) have emerged as a cornerstone approach for the development and distribution of educational content. These resources are distributed by learning object repositories (LORs), which can make it easier for users to find suitable LOs by using Recommender Systems (RSs). This paper presents a hybrid recommendation model for LORs that combines content-based, demographic and context-aware techniques, along with the use of quality and popularity metrics. This article also describes how the model has been used to implement two RSs for two real LORs: ViSH and Europeana. Each of these RSs was evaluated in terms of accuracy, utility, usability and satisfaction perceived by end users. Besides, an A/B testing was performed in ViSH to compare the recommendations of the RS with random suggestions. The results showed that the RSs had a high user acceptance in terms of utility, usability and satisfaction, and that the RSs significantly exceeded the performance achieved by the random recommendations.

learning object repositories (LOR) are digital collections of educational resources and/or metadata aimed at facilitating reuse of materials worldwide In open repositories resources are made available at no cost representing a case of information sharing with an implicit and diffuse social context In such settings quality control is in many cases based in some form of community filtering that provides a reliable basis for ranking resources when repositories reach a critical mass of users However there have been numerous repository initiatives and projects and many of them did not reached a significant degree of actual usage and growth that made them sustainable in the long term In consequence finding models for sustainable collections is a key Issue in repository research and the main problem behind that is understanding the evolution of successful repositories This in turn requires analyzing experimental models of the behavior of their users that are coherent with the available evidence on their structure and growth patters This paper provides a partial model for such behavior based on existing reported evidence and on the examination of patterns in a large and mature repository Agent-based simulation was chosen to allow for contrasting configurations with different parameters Simulations were devised with the RePast framework and the resulting model implementation constitutes an initial baseline for future studies aimed at contrasting empirical data on repository usage with their community setting The model described accounts for known user contribution patterns and it is coherent with the implicit social network structure found in an existing large LOR (C) 2010 Elsevier BV All rights reserved

Evaluating collaborative filtering recommendations inside large learning object repositories

Collaborative filtering (CF) algorithms are techniques used by recommender systems to predict the utility of items for users based on the similarity among their preferences and the preferences of other users. The enormous growth of learning objects on the internet and the availability of preferences of usage by the community of users in the existing learning object repositories (LORs) have opened the possibility of testing the efficiency of CF algorithms on recommending learning materials to the users of these communities. In this paper we evaluated recommendations of learning resources generated by different well known memory-based CF algorithms using two databases (with implicit and explicit ratings) gathered from the popular MERLOT repository. We have also contrasted the results of the generated recommendations with several existing endorsement mechanisms of the repository to explore possible relations among them. Finally, the recommendations generated by the different algorithms were compared in order to evaluate whether or not they were overlapping. The results found here can be used as a starting point for future studies that account for the specific context of learning object repositories and the different aspects of preference in learning resource selection. In this paper, we describe the special challenges that educational games (also known as serious games) pose for online learning object (LO) repositories. As in all metadata, a tension exists between descriptive power and the effort needed to create these descriptions. This tension is even greater when describing complex, highly interactive multimedia content such as serious games. We consider serious games as LOs, proposing game-specific metadata, and advocate for game authoring tool support that streamlines its creation.

The present editorial introduces a special issue of the IEEE-RITA journal devoted to Strategies to Improve the Usability of learning object repositories (LORs). This special issue is sponsored by the Ibero-American Program of Science and Technology for Development (CYTED) under the scope of the RIURE network (Ibero-American Network for Usability Educational repositories) code 513RT0471. This editorial briefly introduces some of the main usability problems we encounter in LORs nowadays and summarizes the subjects tackled by the selected articles.

Open Education Resources (OERs) have been identified as instrumental in facilitating access to quality teaching and learning materials. However, despite the rapid development of technologies capable of making OERs, the uptake and co-creation of OERs by educators is still low. This paper outlines a study conducted in order to investigate the use of learning object repositories (LORs) in co-creation of OERs by educators. Using the Uses and Gratification theory, a survey was conducted with 36 educators in order to identify learning objects commonly used by educators and, additionally, to determine the factors that can positively influence educators to be co-creators of OERs. The results indicate that sharing knowledge, contributing to other people and intellectual challenge are factors that are highly correleted in motivating educators to be co-creators of OERs. The results also indicate that the learning objects commonly used by the educators are the course modules and presentation slides. In conclusion, in order for educators to be co-creators of OERs they need to be intrinsically motivated and be able to collaborate with others for non-selfish reasons. The results of of this study have the potential of influencing how LORs should be design in order to facilitate effective co-creation of OERs.

learning objects are entities that may be used for learning, education or training. Nowadays they are often stored in learning object repositories (LORs), such as the Ariadne Knowledge Pool System (K-PS) [23], Merlot and EdNa. Typically users can search for learning objects in those LORs by filling out an electronic form that enables them to compose Boolean combinations of search criteria. More research is needed on novel access paradigms to enable more effective and flexible access to these repositories. In this paper, we investigate how we can use information visualization techniques for this purpose. We discuss the use of three existing information visualization techniques that we applied to the ARIADNE Knowledge Pool System (KPS).

The main research object of the paper is investigation and proposal of a quality evaluation method suitable for the multiple criteria evaluation (decision making) and optimisation of learning object repositories (LORs). Both LOR 'internal quality' and 'quality in use' evaluation criteria are analysed in the paper and incorporated into the comprehensive quality evaluation model. The LORs quality evaluation criteria are further investigated as the possible LORs optimisation parameters and the expert's additive utility function is explored to be applied to optimise LORs according to the individualised learners needs.
