We present a mobile augmented reality platform targeted to promote learning about planetary systems. The architecture of this platform includes a mobile application and a back-office that allows teachers to choose the planetary system they intend to present to their students. Furthermore, they can introduce information about celestial bodies, such as stars or planets and develop a set of multiple-choice questions to assess student's learning about the subject matters they teach. Also, after playing the game, the data collected by the application is sent to the information system that processes it and makes it available to teachers. With these functionalities, this paper intends to propose this platform as a resource to he implemented in any level of school syllabus.

New technology has the potential to relate teachers and students to diverse learning resources, bringing up the paradigm of learning objects. A learning object is any digital or non-digital entity that can be,used in education through computing. There are many standards defining how to search, evaluate, acquire, share, and use this kind of resource by instructors, students, and automated software processes. Aiming to explore the learning-object paradigm, it was modeled, built, and tested a learning-object database that is part of a collaborative environment, which supports distance learning of computer programming languages. One of the available standards was adopted, the learning object Metadata Standard - LOM. In order to build and manipulate the learning-object database, some strategies showed to be necessary and thus they were defined. This paper presents an adherence analysis of the LOM standard, considering the development of a learning object Repository. The features about LOM utilization by automatic software processes are targeted and some detected problems have their proposed solutions considered and discussed.

The main research object of the paper is investigation and proposal of the comprehensive learning object repositories (LORs) quality evaluation tool suitable for their multiple criteria evaluation and optimisation. Both LORs 'internal quality' and 'quality in use' evaluation (decision making) criteria are analysed in the paper. The authors have analysed several well-known LORs quality evaluation methods. In their opinion, the comprehensive multiple criteria evaluation tool of LOR quality should include both general software 'internal quality' evaluation criteria and 'quality in use' evaluation criteria suitable for the particular project or user. In the authors' opinion, the proposed LOR 'Architecture' group criteria are general 'internal quality' evaluation criteria, and 'Metadata', 'Storage', 'Graphical user interface' and 'Other' are 'customisable' 'quality in use' evaluation criteria. The authors have also presented their comprehensive Virtual learning Environments (VLEs) quality evaluation tool combining both 'internal quality' (i.e., 'General Architecture') and 'quality in use' (i.e., 'Adaptation') technological evaluation criteria. The authors have proposed to use the quality evaluation rating tool while evaluating LORs and VLEs. The authors have analysed that if we want to optimise LORs and VLEs (or the other learning software packages) for the individual learner needs, i.e., to personalise his/her learning process in the best way in conformity with their prerequisites, preferred learning speed and methods etc., we can use the proposed multiple criteria LORs and VLEs expert evaluation tools together with the experts preferred weights of evaluation criteria. In this case we have the multiple criteria optimisation task using criteria ratings and their weights. Quality evaluation criteria of the main e-learning system components, i.e., LORs and VLEs are further investigated as the possible learning software packages optimisation parameters. Clavy is an experimental platform for the management of learning object repositories with dynamically reconfigurable structures. Clavy does not use a concrete metadata schema for repositories but allows repository authors to define the schema that best adapts to each repository. Clavy also promotes an iterative and incremental definition of the schemata, allowing repository authors to reconfigure them throughout their life cycle. So, Clavy integrates information management strategies capable of dealing with this constant change. In this sense, a critical component of Clavy is the browsing system, which allows the user of a repository to carry out the navigation guided by the structure of the schema. One of the strategies used in Clavy to support navigation is the combination of inverted indexes with a browsing cache. However, although this strategy adapts to the most common changes in the schemata it does not adapt to changes in the contents of the repositories (that is, the addition, modification or deletion of learning objects). This paper proposes an enhancement to solve this limitation, and evaluates the approach proposed in a concrete repository in the domain of archeology.

Education providers increasingly integrate digital learning media into their education processes and thereby recognize the advantages of a sharing and reuse culture. But too many educational resources are still buried in closed content management systems, in local databases or on individual or institutional websites and are often not sustainably maintained. The Open Educational Resource (OER) movement aims to overcome such barriers. It has adopted a rather broad definition of OER including open courseware and content, software tools, and learning object repositories. This article argues that edu-sharing, a portal to a network of repositories for educational resource management provides a comprehensive and suitable infrastructure to support the open education movement, but also communities of practice that cannot freely publish their educational assets, e.g., due to license constraints or other regulatory barriers.

Developing a university course for online delivery based on learning objects: from ideals to compromises

A course instructor and his assistant at Athabasca University investigated whether the process of transferring interoperable learning objects from online repositories facilitated course production, both pedagogically and economically. They examined the efficiency of the objects-assembly method from several perspectives while developing an online university course based on learning objects for this, one of Canada's leading online and distance education institutions. The two researchers examined issues that confronted them as they gathered, assessed, repaired, assembled and created learning objects. When their search for suitable objects appeared fruitless, they questioned assumptions made by theoreticians and visionaries about pedagogical and economic efficiencies associated with the objects-assembly metaphor and production. They highlighted this metaphor's failure to guide their course design based on learning objects in a climate of uncertainty and explained the nature of the compromise that eventually compelled them to acquire a proprietary online delivery system.

In recent years the presence and importance of learning objects repositories like Agrega has increased in the educational community. Meanwhile, several trends have gained momentum, notably open education, cloud computing or the web of linked data as a realization of the Semantic Web. Educational repositories should encompass all these trends to maintain high levels of service. This paper proposes a set of best practices to the Spanish learning object repository Agrega, aiming to improve on its current retrieval, interoperability and reuse capabilities. As a guiding principle, the user's perspective and needs are given priority. The most recent learning technologies and semantic web standards are considered in this approach, including ISO/IEC MLR, LRMI and RAMLET metadata specifications. This set of recommendations aims to serve as a basis for other learning resources repositories, as well to any other kind of repository, currently planning to adopt the new generation of standards and technologies, like the linked data web.

In web-based education. there is an emphasis on reusing and sharing instructional content due to the complexity of the development process of high-quality learning materials. It leads to the learning objects orientation as well as to partnerships among institutions to promote sharing of these objects. In order to allow local autonomy and less local effort when participating of this global environment, we developed LORIS, an integration system of learning objects' repositories. This system is based on the mediators and wrappers architecture, implemented through web-services. Our approach allows local autonomy and also an interoperable integrated view. LORIS is being adopted by PGL, an international partnership project for promoting web-based education.

Automatic evaluation of metadata quality in digital repositories

Owing to the recent developments in automatic metadata generation and interoperability between digital repositories, the production of metadata is now vastly surpassing manual quality control capabilities. Abandoning quality control altogether is problematic, because low-quality metadata compromise the effectiveness of services that repositories provide to their users. To address this problem, we present a set of scalable quality metrics for metadata based on theBruce& Hillman framework for metadata quality control. We perform three experiments to evaluate our metrics: (1) the degree of correlation between the metrics and manual quality reviews, (2) the discriminatory power between metadata sets and (3) the usefulness of the metrics as low-quality filters. Through statistical analysis, we found that several metrics, especially Text Information Content, correlate well with human evaluation and that the average of all the metrics are roughly as effective as people to flag low-quality instances. The implications of this finding are discussed. Finally, we propose possible applications of the metrics to improve tools for the administration of digital repositories.

There are a large number of educational resources available on the Internet through different repositories. However, authenticity methods of learning objects has not been widely adopted by repositories, making it difficult to verify the authors of the content. To solve this problem, our goal is to aid users and authors of learning objects to have a trusted verification of authenticity and versioning of learning objects by applying digital signatures into the lifecycle of learning objects. In our propose, after a learning object is uploaded to a repository, the author presents his/her digital certificate, a special LOM record is created with the information from the author's certificate, and then it is signed to prove its authenticity. The signature is produced using digital certificates issued by the digital signature infrastructure of Costa Rica, which guarantees legal binding and trust over time. We hope to propose a generic framework than can be implemented in any repository.
