In this paper we describe one of the browsing strategies for learning object repositories implemented in the Clavy platform, a platform for the management of repositories with reconfigurable structures. Since Clavy makes it possible to dynamically modify the structure of the repositories, it must support a navigation model independent of that structure. For this purpose, the platform adopts a tag-based browsing model, according to which users select descriptive tags to filter learning objects (in Clavy, these descriptive tags correspond to element-value pairs). In our experience using Clavy, we have realized that updating the browsing state when the user changes the set of selected tags can be a costly process. The proposed strategy alleviates this cost by combining inverted indexes with a multilevel cache model that enables the system, on the one hand, to cache filtered objects (i.e., set of objects filtered by sets of selected tags), and, on the other hand, selectable tags (i.e., set of tags able to shrink sets of objects).

User-oriented quality for OER: understanding teachers' views on re-use, quality, and trust

We analysed how teachers as users of open educational resources (OER) repositories act in the re-use process and how they perceive quality. Based on a quantitative empirical study, we also surveyed which quality requirements users have and how they would contribute to the quality process. Trust in resources, organizations, and technologies seem to be of particular importance when looking at quality. In our findings, we derive recommendations for learning object repositories and OER user-oriented quality assurance.

This study examines learning and usage of the Plant Sciences E-Library (PASSEL, ***), a large international, open-source multidisciplinary learning object repository (7793 users from 14 countries). The analyses employ predictive analytics to isolate usage variables which predict learning from the instructional material. Specifically, the study focuses on student engagement as measured by total time online and time spent with different content modality material. This paper describes the analytic process, reports data on usage of learning object modules and module elements, identifies significant predictors of learning, and discusses future research directions.

Federated semantic search using terminological thesauri for learning object discovery

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to propose a framework and system to address the inability to discover new and authentic learning material and the lack of a single access point for search and browsing of remote learning object repositories (LORs). Design/methodology/approach - The authors develop a framework for keyword-based query expansion using SKOS domain terminologies and implement a federated search mechanism integrating various disparate LORs within a learning management system (LMS). Findings - The authors show that the expanded query achieves improved information gain and it is applied for federated information access, by simultaneously searching within a number of repositories. Results can be seamlessly aggregated back within the LMS and the course context. Practical implications - It is possible to retrieve additional learning objects (LOs) and achieve a corresponding increase in recall, while maintaining precision. SKOS expansion behaves well in a scholarly setting, which, combined with federated search, can contribute toward LOs' discovery at a balanced cost. The system can be easily integrated with other platforms as well, building on open standards and RESTful communication. Originality/value - To the authors' knowledge, this is the first time SKOS-based query expansion is applied in a federated setting, and for the discovery and alignment of learning objects residing within LORs. The results show that this approach can achieve considerable information gain and that it is possible to strike a balance between search effectiveness, query drift and performance.

The rapid evolution within the context of e-learning is closely linked to international efforts on the standardization of learning object metadata, which provides learners in a web-based educational system with ubiquitous access to multiple distributed repositories. This article presents a hybrid agent-based architecture that enables the recovery of learning objects tagged in learning object Metadata (LOM) and provides individualized help with selecting learning materials to make the most suitable choice among many alternatives.

A learning objects repository (LOR) is a web-based educational portal that houses, displays, and delivers sharable content objects for educational purposes. Design of such a repository encounters a number of considerations that relate the behavior of the information system to the content objects it manages. This paper examines these design issues in light of standards we have utilized. In particular, the instructional design of our learning objects is based on a concept called progressive scaffolding, which refers to the process of providing differing levels of media guidance. A brief description of related research is included. Furthermore, our objects are compliant with the Advanced Distributed learning's Sharable Content object Reference Model (SCORM) to ensure they behave in a uniform and predictable manner. This paper also reviews existing content portals and gives a summary of an evaluation project carried out with a prototype.

It has been argued that the reuse of educational resources will contribute to the development of economies of scale in which users, both learners and teachers, can create, source, and share knowledge and information. Central to this objective are learning object repositories (LORs) that can support resource reuse within and across learning communities. The uptake and use of LORs by communities will be influenced by a number of sociocultural factors that are difficult to distinguish and solve, since they involve a number of interrelated, tacit variables. In this article, we discuss three case studies outlining a range of actual and potential cultural issues affecting the implementation of LORs. We present a framework that can support systematic identification of these issues in the design and development stage and guide future implementations.

Interoperability is one of the main issues in creating a networked system of repositories The approaches range from simply forcing one metadata standard on all participating repositories to highly sophisticated semantic web based architectures with full semantic mapping capabilities between different schemas. The eduSource project in its holistic approach to building a network of learning object repositories in Canada is implementing an open network for learning services. Its openness is supported by an eduSource Communication Protocol (ECL) which closely implements the IMS Digital Repository Interoperability (DRI) specification and architecture, and by connection middleware that enables any service providers to join the network. EduSource is open to external initiatives as it explicitly supports an extensible bridging mechanism between eduSource and other major initiatives. This paper focuses on the design of ECL as an implementation of IMS DRI and supporting infrastructure and middleware. We also present two applications used in evaluating our approach: a gateway for connecting between eduSource and the NSDL initiative, and a federated search connecting eduSource, EdNA and SMETE.

More and more students are financially unable to acquire, or deliberately choose to go without course textbooks. A variety of commercial and noncommercial initiatives have materialized to address the student success challenge of learning material access inequality in the classroom. There is a gap between how higher education faculty plan to teach a course and the actual learning environment that exists in practice. Faculty are beginning to experiment with freely available and licensed library materials as a substitute for commercial textbooks and course packages to address the failure of textbook publishers to reach a price point that entices students to buy textbooks. The results thus far are promising. Some courses can be delivered today using only "freely available" learning resources, some using amix of fee based and free, while others cannot be delivered using any freely available resources at all due to a lack of availability. © 2006 by The Haworth Press, Inc.
