learning objects (LOS) within their new features, give new opportunities to learners and educators. LO based learning environments are mostly used within web environments, especially through distance education. This study presents an application about the use of LOs in a real classroom environment. In this application, a learning Object Repository (LOR) relevant to secondary school mathematics curricula has been prepared and published on the web. The research sample consists of thirty students from a high school at 9th grade. In order to answer the research questions about the implementation of LOs for mathematics teaching in a high school classroom, qualitative and quantitative data were obtained both from the teacher and students participated in the study. The analysis of the data illustrated that students were easily able to follow the instructions of LOs and practise activities within LOs. The attitudes and approaches of students were generally positive. In despite of inconveniency with the teacher's familiar instructional practices, she also expressed her positive opinions about the learning and motivational effects of LOs. These findings support the idea that the use of LOs can be an effective learning tool in high school mathematics classrooms. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

learning is a crucial component of serious games (SG), and therefore, their design should be grounded in instructional principles. A descriptive research and case study approach were employed to study the structure and elements of SG's gameplay. This study was done to uncover the nature and applicability of learning objects (LOs) during the SG design. It was revealed that indeed LOs are applicable to SG design. LOs relate to the structure of meaningful serious games. In SG learning and gaming are blended through various gameplay elements that correspond to instructional elements. The results are presented as a practical model to guide designers in incorporating LOs during SG design. Employing LOs allows for effective and pedagogically informed SG design decisions. It favours modular design and results in interoperable and reusable SG artefacts. The design and implementation of an educational game called NetCom Quest were used to evaluate the model.

The main scientific problems investigated in this article deal with technical evaluation of quality attributes of the main components of e-learning systems (referred to here as IDLE - Digital Libraries of Educational Resources and Services), i.e. learning objects (LOs) and Virtual learning Environments (VLEs). The main research object of the work is the effectiveness of methods of DLE components evaluation. The aim of the article is to analyse popular existing LO and VLE technical evaluation tools, and to formulate new more complex tools for technical evaluation of LOs and VLEs based on requirements for flexible IDLE, as well as to evaluate most popular open source VLEs against new more complex criteria. Complex tools have been created for the evaluation of IDLE components, based on a flexible approach. The authors have analysed existing tools for technical evaluation of LOs, and it was investigated that these tools have a number of limitations. Some of these tools do not examine different LO life cycle stages, and other insufficiently examine technical evaluation criteria before LO inclusion in the repository. All these tools insufficiently examine LOs reusability criteria. Therefore more complex LO technical evaluation tool is needed. It was investigated that this new more complex LO technical evaluation tool should include LO technical evaluation criteria suitable for different LO life cycle stages, including criteria before, during and after LO inclusion in the repository as well as LO reusability criteria. The authors have also examined several VLE technical evaluation tools suitable for flexible IDLE, and it was investigated that these tools have a number of limitations. In this article, we present a review on the topic of learning objects (LOs) based on case studies presented in the bibliography. We start by considering the origins of the term, various conceptualizations, and then focus on LO reutilization. The case studies selected are used to analyze aspects pertaining to LO creation and use in specific educational contexts. The results obtained can be used to consider issues such as reasons why educators choose to work with LOs, LO design methodologies (technological, pedagogical, hybrid), types of design scenarios (audiovisual, interactive, mixed), development tools (for assembling LO, generating contents, generating activities/self-evaluations, loading meta-data), publication environments (LO repositories and Virtual Teaching and learning Environments), and assessment processes (tests with students and educators). This review reveals a positive, progressing outlook as regards LO creation and their incorporation/use in educational contexts. There are also some aspects that would have to be considered in more detail in relation to LO reutilization that are good for analysis and coming up with new lines of action.

By looking closely at the evaluation de digital contents of educational materials, this work examines information competencies within information literacy programs and their impact on the performance of postgraduate students. An initial examination of Social Sciences postgraduate student academic information consumption habits is made, followed by an analysis of the features of digital educational contents required to assess quality of learning and determine the efficiency of learning objects within specific information literacy programs. The paper then presents the impact of the assessment of digital educational contents as a means of demonstrating information literacy and as a tool for acquiring knowledge. The researchers also propose a model with evaluation criteria for assessing use of learning objects and the development of information literacy programs based on the competent use of learning objects.

The dynamic sharing of learning materials among the members of a Virtual Education Community aimed at implementing a collaborative mechanism of producing, testing and improving learning objects is discussed. The resulting assemblage of an efficient distributed repositories platform offered us the opportunity of testing different search engines. The adopted solutions were found to offer an effective support to the sharing of learning objects. This work reports the application of learning objects (LOs) for Electronics teaching, specially for themes that students struggle to grasp understanding. Two themes for Electrical and Electronics Engineering are illustrated here: equipment insulation and grounding, and the relationship between nonlinear loads and harmonic distortion. Using different learning objects, students were requested to answer some questions in a survey. In order to overcome this difficulty learning objects are used during technology learning. The online video-sharing platform YouTube offers several learning objects and has more than 2 billion monthly accesses, being widely used for learning purposes. This work presents an analysis of the search engine for educational content videos from YouTube. Results point out that, for educational content, the categorization provided by the platform is generally not assertive.
