Many high school students are not good at studying the field of electromagnetics. Three major reasons have been given for this: "hard to see the overall structure of electromagnetics," "hard to understand the concept of fields," and "hard to perform intuitive experiments that can be visualized." To solve these problems, some studies have been conducted on experiential learning for physics using haptic devices that allow users to experience force feedback. However, fewer studies have used haptic devices for electromagnetics compared with mechanics, and only basic content has been implemented. Therefore, we developed advanced electromagnetic learning support systems using haptic devices. These systems simulate electromagnetic phenomena according to the parameters set by a learner and can help students "feel" forces of electric and magnetic field vectors that are difficult to experience in reality. We developed two systems. The first system allows learners to experience Ampere's force and magnetic flux density, and the second system allows learners to experience the magnetic field and vector potential generated around currents. Four university students in the Faculty of Engineering at Tokyo University of Science participated in an evaluation experiment and used the second system. The experience was highly rated by the participants, suggesting that our system using haptic devices is effective for intuitive learning of electromagnetics.

In this study, we focus on the acquisition of cognitive skills by doing, which has not yet been studied in the fields of learning by examples. We propose a new way of learning, "learning by following", which enables learners to attentively follow an example of a series of actions. Since following actions is difficult, we designed a learning support system that enables learners to be assisted to learn by following. We examined this system though experiments using the LEGO Mindstorms, whose results showed that our learning support system successfully enabled learning by following. © 2005 Asia-Pacific Society for Computers in Education.

Proposal of fingering detection method for touch typing learning support system

Recently, typing skills especially touch typing is given much importance. However, the typing skill of entrant students tends to be poor, because of the use of smart phone. Although some students try to improve their typing skill using typing software, pre-existing one similarly ignores which fingers are used, and instead emphasizes hitting the correct keys as fast as possible. The goal of this study is to develop a learning support system for touch typing based on fingering detected when typing, and to evaluate the possibility of teaching touch typing to non-touch typists through practicing with this system. In this study, we propose a method to determine which fingers are used to press which keys by using video of fingering made when typing and data of the pressed keys. Furthermore, we conduct evaluation experiments with the system using this method and evaluate the effectiveness of the system. According to the experiment results, estimation accuracy tended to decrease as CPM values increase. We learned that there were cases in which incorrect estimations were made, and we classified the causes into two categories: errors caused by occlusion and errors due to the image sampling being unable to keep up with the fingering. It is evident from the experimental results and discussion that when this system is used for non-touch typists to learn touch typing, it gives correct estimation results and is effective. For further research, we suggest using this system to facilitate the learning of touch typing for non-touch typists. More specifically, learners should enter a sequence of letters shown on-screen. Messages should be displayed on-screen when an incorrect key is pressed or when the recommended finger is not used. We believe that touch typing skills can be easily acquired by making users aware of what fingers they use to press the keys.

Children of school age are required to go to school, but some cannot because they must receive long-term hospital care. In Japan, because every child has a duty to study for at least nine years (6-15 years), classes are offered in the pediatric ward of some large hospitals, such as university and children's hospitals. Teachers from nearby elementary and junior high schools are dispatched to give lessons in the hospital classroom. With the results of interviews to the doctor, teachers, and mother of such a patient, we designed a learning support system we named "KOCHI" to support this kind of learning activity and to help with monitoring of a child's educational and health condition during their hospital stay. "KOCHI" consists of an "Educational part" and a "Communication part". We developed a prototype of the educational part, which contains a textbook index, quizzes, and educational games. "KOCHI" was evaluated by a doctor and three teachers. Each evaluator gave us positive, negative, and constructive opinions. Here we show its functionality and the results of our evaluation of the educational part. From our experience with this pilot study, we are developing the full system.

Developing a Remote Laboratory system of Stepper Motor for learning support

Contribution: This article proposes a low-cost and mobile device-based learning support system for the stepper motor, which provides Web-based remote laboratory. This system allows young engineers to learn about rotational principles, control methods, and programming in stepper motors. Background: Familiarity with electrical machinery, such as motors, is an important factor for electric power engineers. Hands-on laboratories are the most effective and important learning method in the study of electrical machinery. However, the Hands-on laboratories require commitments of time, space, and significant number of expensive laboratory instruments. Intended Outcomes: In the proposed system, the students are free to repeat the experiment using a real stepper motor, for example, using a smartphone. This learning support system that combines remote laboratory and virtual laboratory is expected to be an easy-to-use for young engineers. Application Design: Proposed system consists of the low-cost microcomputers, such as raspberry Pi and Arduino, and does not use expensive software, such as LabVIEW and MATLAB. It has both low cost and compatibility with any mobile devices. Findings: The learning effectiveness and usability of the system were evaluated through questionnaires and tests for a total of 50 students at the authors' department. Consequently, the results of the evaluation tests and questionnaires demonstrated that the proposed system will be useful to study the stepper motor.

In this study, we aimed to implement a learning system that supports learners to solve problems with respect to 'Existence Domain of Solutions of Quadratic Functions (EDSQF)'. Our system also supports them to relearn previous units of quadratic functions. In addition, we designed a method for estimating learners' weak points with their use histories on our system. In our system, learners can learn by using learning materials with respect to EDSQF and related units. Our system has a function that checks learners' answers automatically and a function that provides explanations. Namely, learners can recognize immediately whether their answer is correct or not. Moreover, if they failed to solve problems, they can find explanations of those problems and challenge to solve related exercises. By providing these functions, learners can do self-learning with our system. Experimental results are proved that our system had a positive effect on learning EDSQF and related units to solve problems.

The purpose of this research is to propose a calligraphy learning support system focusing on brushstrokes. In conventional calligraphy, the learner imitates and writes characters while looking at a model placed next to the writing paper. However, it is difficult for the learner to learn the brushstroke characteristics, such as correct pressure and speed of brush movement, just by looking at a model. Therefore, we added an onomatopoeia utterance function to the conventional system to solve these problems. The onomatopoeia represents the brushstroke characteristics, such as pressure and speed. We compare the proposed method with the function to the comparative method without the function. As a result, it became clear that, when using the proposed method, correct brushstroke method could certainly be learned in a shorter time than with the comparison method, thus confirming the possibility of improving the calligraphy of proposed method.

The growing disinterest in science among young people has become a serious problem. Students do not relate the theories and formulas learned in physics with real-world phenomena. The objective of this research is to propose introduction learning methods for students to discover laws of motion from the phenomena around them. In this learning method, real-world objects and motions are analyzed and common characteristics for these motions are extracted to form a law. Any contradiction in the created law is then investigated with other phenomena. We developed a system to achieve this learning method. In the system, learners use cameras to take photographs of physical phenomena, which encourages awareness of the physical phenomena around them. As the outcome of the analysis, the learners attach annotations to the photos that represent the motions and properties of the moving objects and surrounding objects. They then create a group of photos based on the same motion and develop a hypothesis of the law by selecting common annotations from the group. If the created hypothesis has a contradiction, the system sends a message to encourage the learners to rethink their hypothesis.

Since computers are used everywhere in the current society, it is important that science communication is implemented actively. In addition, it is also important that people actively participate in this and deepen their understanding of science. However, few studies have been done to deeply explore the mechanism of the secondary and tertiary derivation of science communication. Furthermore, programming education has attracted attention as a means of learning computational thinking for every child living in an information society. However, even though children are interested in programming and computer science, the continuous framework of programming education is insufficient. And there is room for consideration about mechanisms and systems that encourage the derivation of science communication in computer science and support continuous learning. In this research, in order to solve the above problems, we have designed and evaluated a cloud-based system that is a place of science communication and support programming learning, exceeding distance and temporal constraints. As the result of research, the proposed system in this paper intended the potentials of promoting the derivation of science communication and supporting continuous programming learning. However, there is room for improvement of the system design and the verification in detail.
