learning objects (LOS) within their new features, give new opportunities to learners and educators. LO based learning environments are mostly used within web environments, especially through distance education. This study presents an application about the use of LOs in a real classroom environment. In this application, a learning Object Repository (LOR) relevant to secondary school mathematics curricula has been prepared and published on the web. The research sample consists of thirty students from a high school at 9th grade. In order to answer the research questions about the implementation of LOs for mathematics teaching in a high school classroom, qualitative and quantitative data were obtained both from the teacher and students participated in the study. The analysis of the data illustrated that students were easily able to follow the instructions of LOs and practise activities within LOs. The attitudes and approaches of students were generally positive. In despite of inconveniency with the teacher's familiar instructional practices, she also expressed her positive opinions about the learning and motivational effects of LOs. These findings support the idea that the use of LOs can be an effective learning tool in high school mathematics classrooms. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Often during the teaching of mathematics, students have difficulties to understand some abstract concepts. That's why it is necessary to show the student the concepts as clearly and definitely as possible. The proposal of this project is a teaching strategy. It is the use of Geometric Representation integrated learning objects for the internalization of concepts. The research process involves the design, development, and evaluation of learning objects and how it promotes understanding of the contents of the topic "Real Geometric Vectors and their application". At the beginning of this article are the context and the latest research concerning to this project. Then an overview of the theoretical framework that supports this work is shown. Finally, the paper describes the methodology used in the project, results of data, expected contributions and conclusions.

The use of technology is bringing about changes in education. Teaching through the computer gives a position to acquire concepts about any field of knowledge. In this context, learning objects are presented as a possibility to enhance the procedure for implementing the curriculum because they are considered portions of content that can be reapplied to different audiences in different situations. This paper describes the principles that underlie the creation of a learning Object Science and its application in order to contribute to the concepts of Soils of elementary education.

People of Chinese origin have lived in British Columbia, Canada, since the beginning of non-aboriginal settlement. Many of them have left Chinese-language records that are valuable for the study of Chinese immigrant history. This article provides information about a pilot project completed at the Asian Library of the University of British Columbia to build a learning-object repository using an archival collection of historical Chinese language materials. The collection supports the undergraduate curriculum Chinese-Canadian history. This article introduces the definition and characteristics of learning objects and learning-objects metadata resulting from the project's investigation and the author's experience with selecting and testing systems to develop a prototype of a learning-object repository.

In this paper we consider the extent to which learning objects that focus on higher level thinking might be seen as Type II applications, as defined by Maddux, Johnson, and Willis (2001). We conclude that learning objects are at best hybrid applications, with some Type I and some Type II characteristics. We also consider whether the educational effect of a learning object is attributable to the technology or to the pedagogical model embedded in the learning object. We discuss this question in the context of a study of middle-school students' mathematical thinking while performing some investigation tasks using learning objects and some without. We suggest that a learning object may be seen as an instance of the pedagogical model embedded in its design, and that different instances, even ones where technology is not used, are educationally equivalent. That is, it is the pedagogical model and not the technology that provides the predominant educational effect. (C) 2006 by The Haworth Press, Inc. All rights reserved.

learning objects and learning content management systems are considered to be 'the next wave in engineering education'. The results of experiments with these new trends in ICT in engineering education are described in this paper. The prospects were examined and the concepts of reusability of content for teachers and for personalized education using learning objects delivered on demand to students were put to the test. The hurdles that need to be overcome and the benefits of using learning objects and learning content management systems are discussed. This paper is concluded with a discussion of the findings for future developments in engineering education.

learning is a crucial component of serious games (SG), and therefore, their design should be grounded in instructional principles. A descriptive research and case study approach were employed to study the structure and elements of SG's gameplay. This study was done to uncover the nature and applicability of learning objects (LOs) during the SG design. It was revealed that indeed LOs are applicable to SG design. LOs relate to the structure of meaningful serious games. In SG learning and gaming are blended through various gameplay elements that correspond to instructional elements. The results are presented as a practical model to guide designers in incorporating LOs during SG design. Employing LOs allows for effective and pedagogically informed SG design decisions. It favours modular design and results in interoperable and reusable SG artefacts. The design and implementation of an educational game called NetCom Quest were used to evaluate the model.

The main scientific problems investigated in this article deal with technical evaluation of quality attributes of the main components of e-learning systems (referred to here as IDLE - Digital Libraries of Educational Resources and Services), i.e. learning objects (LOs) and Virtual learning Environments (VLEs). The main research object of the work is the effectiveness of methods of DLE components evaluation. The aim of the article is to analyse popular existing LO and VLE technical evaluation tools, and to formulate new more complex tools for technical evaluation of LOs and VLEs based on requirements for flexible IDLE, as well as to evaluate most popular open source VLEs against new more complex criteria. Complex tools have been created for the evaluation of IDLE components, based on a flexible approach. The authors have analysed existing tools for technical evaluation of LOs, and it was investigated that these tools have a number of limitations. Some of these tools do not examine different LO life cycle stages, and other insufficiently examine technical evaluation criteria before LO inclusion in the repository. All these tools insufficiently examine LOs reusability criteria. Therefore more complex LO technical evaluation tool is needed. It was investigated that this new more complex LO technical evaluation tool should include LO technical evaluation criteria suitable for different LO life cycle stages, including criteria before, during and after LO inclusion in the repository as well as LO reusability criteria. The authors have also examined several VLE technical evaluation tools suitable for flexible IDLE, and it was investigated that these tools have a number of limitations. Several tools practically do not examine VILE adaptation capabilities criteria, and the other insufficiently examines general technical criteria. More complex VILE technical evaluation tool is needed. Therefore the authors propose an original more complex set of VILE technical evaluation crite
In this research we aim to propose an advanced metric to evaluate the effectiveness of learning objects in order to be reused in new contexts. By the way learning objects reusability is achieving economic benefits fro...

Most leading universities are using various elements of distance learning. Preparation of high-quality educational materials for the needs of studies, courses and training still consumes the majority of financial resources allocated by institutions for activities in the field of distance learning. The lack of a well-thought-out e-learning strategy for the creation of knowledge resources is a barrier that hinders the sharing of knowledge between training institutions such as universities, schools and training companies - from various sectors of education, business and administration. This results in a waste of resources, as institutions invest repeatedly in creating the same content. An attempt to solve this problem has led to the development of the concept of learning objects - independent components of e-learning courses that can be used in various distance learning environments and in various educational contexts. The authors of this article have examined whether there is a chance to create an internal university repository of teaching materials that university employees can use. This research is the result of 21 years of work on implementing e-learning at the European University. During research on learning objects, experience was gained from universities in the Netherlands (Open University of the Netherlands, University of Twente), Canada (Athabasca University) and the USA (California State University, Brigham Young University).
