In this work we use the echoes of THz radiation pulses reflected from multilayer systems in order to find hidden layers in an oleo on canvas painting. We fit the reflected waveforms to a superposition of various echoes using a least square algorithm in order to separate overlapping pulses owing to reflections in sub wavelength layers.

This paper presents a modified adaptive Unscented Kalman filter for parameter estimation of nonlinear dynamic systems by analysis of input and output signals. A wide variety of artificial neural network (ANN) methods are used for this purpose. But the selection of appropriate model, and number of neural nodes made it difficult. This paper proposes a model based approach for dynamic system identification, which utilizes Unscented kalman filter (UKF) having multi fold advantages over other adaptive filters. To achieve better accuracy in estimation, the model and measurement error covariance of the UKF are made adaptive. Hence a self tuning approach for updating error covariance is proposed, which utilizes innovation error present in the model with a learning factor inversely proportional to an average value of the covariance. Various simulations have been carried out to show the superiority of the proposed algorithm. The mean square error obtained using this approach is found to be significantly less than other conventional methods.

This paper deals with the electrical double-layer capacitor's (EDLC) aging diagnosis for electric and hybrid vehicles. It has been shown in the literature that the aging of EDLCs is related to the constraints undergone by the component such as EDLC voltage (V-sc) combined with the operating temperature. The results of several studies show that the best indicators of the EDLCs aging are the capacitance and the equivalent series resistance. Some experimental methods allow the identification of these parameters but they are time consuming and cannot be embedded. This study presents a new method to estimate the EDLC parameters using least square algorithm based on data measurements of input/output of the system. In order to perform the aging test, a test bench is developed. EDLCs are aged at constant temperature and constant voltage. They are placed inside a climatic chamber at 70 degrees C and polarized at 2.9 V during the aging process. To quantify the EDLC aging, the equivalent series resistance and the equivalent capacitance are measured. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Damage Identification in a Plate Structure Based on Strain Statistical Moment

The fourth strain statistical moment (FSSM) based damage detection method has been recently proposed by the authors and the results of numerical study demonstrated the proposed method is sensitive to local structural damage but insensitive to measurement noise for beam-type structure. In this paper, the method is extended to a plate structure. The method consists of two steps: damage localization and damage quantification. First, the damage is located by using the difference curved surfaces of FSSMs in one direction of a plate subjected to Gauss White Noise (GWN) excitation before and after damage. Then the model updating method based on least square algorithm is used to estimate the damage severities. Also, the numerical (finite element) simulations are carried out for a simply supported plate. The results demonstrate the proposed method can provide good prediction of both location and severity of damage at one or more sites, even under low damage severities and high measurement noise conditions.

A rectilinear Gaussian model for estimating straight-line parameters

For characterizing straight lines in defocused images, a rectilinear Gaussian model (RGM) is proposed. Based on this model, a novel method for estimating the parameters of straight lines is presented. This method, called gray-scale least square (GLS) method, directly deals with gray-scale image data without requiring any preprocessing and hence no additional noise is introduced. Furthermore, the method is able to simultaneously estimate four parameters of straight lines by performing the algorithm only once, while two parameters can be typically estimated by traditional method. Besides this, all parameters are given in closed-form solution. In order to illustrate the effectiveness of RGM and the GLS method, the experiments are performed on a set of artificial images and natural images. The experimental results show that the GLS method outperforms the traditional method from the point of view of sensitivity to noise and accuracy of parameter estimation. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. A new method for laser spot center location by using the gradient-based and the least square algorithms is introduced in this paper. Compared with the traditional gravity-based algorithm, the results obtained by the proposed method are of higher accuracy. In the experiments, the dimension of the image detected by the CCD is 1024x768. The relative errors of the results were calculated in order to validate the method proposed in this paper. Comparisons of the results were made between the proposed method and the gravity-based algorithm. Results show that the proposed method is of higher accuracy for the center location and the accuracy can be improved by increasing the number of the selected points in the least square algorithm.

A novel online inertia identification approach is presented in this paper. The proposed approach adopts fixed order recursive empirical frequency-domain optimal parameter estimation to identify online the inertia of PMSM. A simple load torque observer based on the mathematical formula of PMSM is also applied to eliminate the load torque disturbance. The results in simulation and experiment show that, the proposed approach is of excellent robustness and precision compared with the traditional recursive least square algorithm for the inertia identification.

Bearing-only tracking analysis is a kind of nonlinear estimation problem, after the measurement equations are linearized processed, the estimate of the motor elements may appear bias or divergent phenomenon. This paper is aiming at target maneuver in passive bearing-only tracking with missing measurements. First, a fusion strategy is proposed. Then, basing on IMM, a multi-station bearing-only maneuvering target tracking method is proposed on the basis of least square method. The algorithm using least square method to roughly estimate the target location, avoiding the nonlinear filtering under angle measurement, and take this algorithm as the observation information of interactive multiple model filtering algorithm, finally realizes the passive tracking of maneuvering targets with missing measurements. Through computer simulation in this paper, the method is proved effective, and is better than multi-station CMKF filter in convergence speed and tracking accuracy.

Compressed sensing is a topic that has recently gained much attention in high-speed underwater acoustic (UWA) communications. Combined the MIMO communication system with OFDM technology, they can realize high-speed data communication over UWA channels and overcome the fading problem efficiently. In this paper performance analysis of compressed sensing (CS) channel estimation algorithms for underwater acoustic communication is investigated. The estimation of UWA channel is mainly based on least square (LS), Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (OMP) and Compressed Sensing Matching Pursuit (CS-MP) channel estimation algorithms. We have compared the performance of channel estimation algorithms by measuring mean squared error (MSE) vs. SNR and calculation time vs. SNR. On the basis of the simulation results, the CS-MP channel estimation indicates to perform better performance than LS and OMP, which can lead to accurate channel state information (CSI) with fewer pilots so as to improve the frequency spectrum efficiency. CS provides some new idea about channel estimation for UWA communications.
