This paper presents a hybrid global optimization algorithm for the localization of microseismic events, which is composed of the least-squares (LS) algorithm and the Cuckoo search (CS) algorithm. It significantly reduces the demand for the accuracy of the inversion velocity model. The positioning process is presented as follows: firstly, construct an objective function by utilizing time difference information of P-wave;then, find the final optimal value through iterations by embedding this objective function as the fitness function to the hybrid algorithm. Through simulation experiments, the hybrid algorithm can acquire more accurate locations and a faster convergence speed than the LS algorithm.

In this note, we present a recursive algorithm for online identification of systems with unknown time delay. The proposed algorithm can be interpreted as an approximate nonlinear least-squares, corresponding to modified normalized or un-normalized least-squares when the normalizing factor gamma < 0 or gamma = 0, respectively. Both algorithms are essentially extensions to general least-squares methodology. Simulation studies demonstrate the characteristics and performance of these algorithms.

In this paper, an identification algorithm for the non-uniformly Wiener systems with dead-zone nonlinearities is proposed. Firstly, a uniform model of the Wiener system is reformulated with the help of the lift technique and a switching function. Then, a leastsquares based iterative recursive algorithm with variable forgetting factor is presented using the auxiliary model and iterative method. Accurate assessment of the primary frequency regulation (PFR) performance of renewable energy units (REU) is critical to ensure the frequency stability in low-inertia power systems. Aiming at the problem that the existing assessment method of PFR cannot accurately reflect the dynamic process of REU with additional PFR control after the disturbance, this paper analyzes the influence of two different delays, communication latency and rising time, on the dynamic effect of PFR of the REUs. The assessment method of PFR based on the first order plus delay time (FOPDT) equivalent model is proposed. Based on the PMU measured frequency and active power data at the point of interconnection (POI), the identification methods of the power frequency proportional coefficient, equivalent latency and equivalent rising time are given. The results show that compared with the existing static assessment method, the proposed method can accurately reflect the static and dynamic characteristics of the PFR process of REU. This method is of great significance to guide transmission system operator to equip REU with PFR capability and set the relevant control parameters of PFR.

A decentralized adaptive synchronization problem for a simple yet nontrivial discrete-time stochastic model of network dynamics is investigated, which also illustrates a general framework for a class of adaptive control problems for complex systems with uncertainties. To describe synchronization phenomena in noisy environments, several new definitions of synchronization for stochastic systems are given and applied in our model. Within this framework, we prove that in four different cases on local goals, including "deterministic tracking," "center-oriented tracking," " loose tracking," and " tight tracking," under mild conditions on noise sequence and communication limits, the agents in the considered model can achieve global synchronization in sense of mean by using local estimators and controllers based on a least-squares (LS) algorithm. These results show that agents in a complex system disturbed by noise with communication limits can autonomously achieve the global goal of synchronization by using local LS-based adaptive controllers while they are pursuing for their local goals.

With the development of autonomous driving technology, inter-vehicle ranging has attracted a lot of attention. In this paper, we propose a simple and low cost visible light ranging system. It exploits a visible light emitting diode (LED) as the transmitter and an avalanche photodiode (APD) array as the receiver in each vehicle. The module measures the round-trip distance of the signal from the rear vehicle LED to the front vehicle which receives and sends back the signal. The position of the front vehicle is then estimated by least-squares and Levenberg-Marquardt algorithms. Upon a complete channel and noise model, simulation results are compared against experimental results, with distance from 1 m to 19 m at a step of 1 m. The system is able to measure the absolute distance up to 14 m and 19 m with an error less than 5 cm and 20 cm respectively.

The problem of identification of systems in dynamic networks is considered. Although the prediction error method (PEM) can be applied to the overall system, the non-standardmodel structure requires solving a non-convex optimization problem. Alternative methods have been proposed, such as instrumental variables and indirect PEM. In this paper, we first consider acyclic cascade systems, and argue that these methods have different ranges of applicability. Then, for a network with feedback connection, we propose an approach to deal with the fact that indirect PEM yields a non-convex problem in that case. A numerical simulation may indicate that this approach is competitive with other existing methods.

A frequency encoding approach for fringe projection profilometry is proposed. First, a series of fringe patterns are generated in computer where the pixels are encoded with the temporal frequencies. Second, the patterns are cast on the object surface by an LCD projector and then the distorted patterns are captured by a CCD camera. Third, a leastsquaresalgorithm based on a linear prediction is deduced to estimate the frequencies, and then the depth map is further reconstructed by using the mapping relationship between the temporal frequency and the depth of the object surface. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the validity of this technique.
