Integrating Stakeholders' Priorities into level of development Supplemental Guidelines for HBIM Implementation

Heritage Building Information Modeling (HBIM) is increasingly utilized to develop accurate and semantic-rich databases for the representation, preservation, and renovation of cultural heritage. A critical factor in successful HBIM delivery is the intended uses of the model, which need to be established by stakeholders at the onset of the program. Despite the greater application of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technologies to HBIM workflows, the discipline continues to lack clarity regarding information requirements from a tenant perspective. The first stage of this research was a review of 26 published HBIM case studies to extract information including HBIM workflows, level of development (LOD) models in the field, and the stakeholders' participation in the HBIM program. The findings from the case studies conclude that most HBIM methodologies did not seek to understand the needs of assumptive stakeholders and lacked a clearly defined objective. Ten interviews with proprietors of ten different historic courthouses in the southeastern United States were also included in the study, which were used to identify the priorities of HBIM programs from a built heritage stakeholder's standpoint. These priorities were used in conjunction with reviewed field standards to develop LOD supplement guidelines applicable for HBIM, which were then validated through a case study. The findings of this research conclude that the creation of LOD guidelines for HBIM application is both achievable and advisable, as they allow stakeholders to identify their priorities for HBIM projects. Such guidelines would assist in standardizing the HBIM discipline and disseminating its usefulness to historic building managers. This research also provides standards that allow cultural heritage stakeholders to make informed decisions about potential HBIM programs and maximize the use of resources to implement such programs. The second recommendation of the working group 2.14 "Digitalization in geotechnical engineering" defines the level of development with respect to the life cycle of the specialized model subsoil. Furthermore, the minimum requirements regarding the implementation of geometrical and semantical data (attribution) into the model are discussed. For consequent use of the specialized model subsoil in context with BIM it is necessary to standardize the data with respect to the model level as well as the object level by means of properties which have to be defined. These recommendations describe the essential requirements for standardized geotechnical properties which still have to be developed. Therefore, data-related requirements for creation as well as the attribution of the specialized model subsoil are discussed.

Existing buildings deteriorate over time, and the energy consumption continues to increase. In order to improve energy efficiency, evaluation of the energy performance of the existing buildings through simulation is required in advance. However, for most existing buildings, drawing information for evaluating energy performance is omitted. Without drawing information, the building energy cannot be modeled and energy cannot be predicted. To solve this problem, the building information modeling (BIM)-building energy modeling (BEM) process based on 3D laser scanning has recently been attracting considerable attention. When there is no drawing information in this process, geometric information of the existing building can be implemented through BIM. In addition, it is extremely important to determine the level of development (LOD) of the BIM because the accuracy of energy prediction depends on the LOD. In other words, the LOD of in-situ BIM should be determined for accurate building energy performance evaluation. Therefore, this study proposes an appropriate LOD of in-situ BIM for BEM implementation of existing buildings. Accordingly, the BIM-BEM process was applied and the building energy performance was evaluated. In addition, the uncertainty and accuracy were analyzed through comparison with the measured building energy consumptions. As a result of the analysis, LOD 350 was determined as a suitable LOD, capable of simulating the energy performance of an actual building.

Generating a Daily Bill of Materials at level of development 400 Using the Smallest Workface Boundary

Observations and sample tests at five construction sites showed that the time required for generating a daily bill of materials (BOM) is within the range of 12-68 min. However, 20 foremen interviewed at the sites stated that, in reality, they cannot spend more than 2-3 min per day generating a daily BOM, although this information would be helpful for field control. To meet this time requirement, this study uses a building information model at level of development (LOD) 400, i.e., the fabrication level, and a concept referred to as the smallest workface boundary (SWFB), which is the boundary that encapsulates a set of LOD400 objects in the smallest workable unit to overcome their high granularity. This research also presents four types of rules to automate the generation of SWFBs to the extent possible from LOD400 objects. The SWFB concept and rules are incorporated into a protype to aid a foreman in quickly generating a daily BOM with LOD400 objects. A methodology that a foreman can use with the prototype is also provided. For validation, field experiments were conducted at sites in Abu Dhabi, Stockholm, and Lima. With the latest version of the prototype, the time requirement (i.e., not requiring more than 2-3 min per day) was met with an average of 59 s.

Whole Building life cycle assessment (LCA) calculations are increasingly done using building information modeling (BIM) data exports, but some challenges need to be overcome. BIM models lack data for a whole building LCA analysis. To counter this lack of detailed information, manual inputs are often required when using a static BIM model and cannot easily consider recalculations over the duration of the project. This paper presents a method to automatically perform LCA calculations early, at the first level of a BIM model's development (i.e. the LOD100 level), and to allow for easier updates of the calculation throughout the evolution of the BIM model. To achieve this goal, a novel data layer and format is proposed. This data layer fills the information gap between extracted BIM data and existing LCA data provided by common LCA databases such as ecoinvent. (C) 2017 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

This paper presents the results of an exploratory study on the awareness of users about privacy abuse when communicating and using the mobile Internet. The study researches the relationships and associations between the level of the telecommunications market development, the wealth of a country, user proficiency, the affordability of mobile technology, the level of user tolerance of state-implemented content censorship, and similar privacy threats. The results and findings were selected from a comprehensive body of data gathered from 10 countries which have a low record of respect for human rights. Most of the selected countries are Asian or African states. Differences between the tolerance levels of the various user communities are discussed in relation to the criteria which define the level of information society development and the user skill levels. For a better understanding of the wider issues a brief introduction explains the capacity of smartphones to protect a user's privacy and the availability of circumvention tools against state initiated blocking.

Automated model progression scheduling using level of development

Purpose - The purpose of this study is to unravel the mystery of level of development (LOD) as frequently referred to in Building Information Modelling (BIM) delivery *** a key parameter for describing digital content in a BIM context. It is seen as an important vehicle for specifying information exchange throughout a facility' life cycle. However, hitherto, there has been little research examining how, beyond the theoretical concept, LOD can be applied and smartly utilised in practice. This study seeks to unravel the concept and reveal new insights into its application from a design management perspective. Design/methodology/approach - Following a literature and document review, two small-scale case projects were identified. The first was - to temper the state-of-The-Art theory and understand what happens in practice today - discovery led. The second was - to drill down to the core of LOD utilisation to support planned model progression and test a plausible novel methodology to automate associated workflow - theory led. Findings - Results suggest that a lack of consistent understanding and utilisation exists and particular LOD errors are highlighted, but, moreover, LOD can be so much more useful if integrated into a BIM-like workflow. Consequently, a new method of automatically comparing planned model progression with the current state of the model is presented. Practical implications - Advancement of the understanding of the concept and application of LOD and its usefulness has significant implications for designing information management research. Originality/value - Fresh insights into LOD, concept and application are presented. The emerging proposed utilisation framework is novel and targets removal of known labour-intensive activities associated with LOD matrices whilst facilitating rich reuse of efficient model progression knowledge. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

This paper uses entropy method to evaluate the level of green financial development in the provinces of Yangtze River Delta Economic Zone from 2011 to 2018, and on this basis establishes the Probit model to study the relevant influencing factors, aiming to provide relevant suggestions for the green financial development of Yangtze River Delta Economic Zone. The research shows that there is still a certain gap between the overall level of green financial development in the Yangtze River Delta Economic Zone, and the influence factors of the green financial development level are significant, and the degree of influence corresponding to the differences of provinces is different. Based on the above research results, this paper puts forward some suggestions to give full play to the joint and synergistic development effect of Yangtze River Delta Economic Zone, draw on the advanced experience of green finance development at home and abroad, and construct a green financial development system scientifically.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a critical data source for constructing new structures depicting the inner workings of the systems and components in detail. However, current modeling practices are based on traditional construction methods, resulting in insufficient details within the BIM model to support robotic construction for many building systems. The model's level of development (LOD) needs to be increased to facilitate the changes in data requirements. One method that allows for increased LOD is computational modeling;however, many factors can influence the process. Therefore, this study investigates challenges for implementation to increase the LOD for building to enable robotic construction. Dynamo is used as the computational modeling software in conjunction with Autodesk Revit to accomplish this. A process was created to place various components, such as concrete masonry units (CMUs), in their final design location and extract information utilizing these platforms for masonry construction. However, challenges were met during this process, including material naming conventions, tolerance/specification inputs, wall openings/lintels, and component/material libraries. The challenges presented during the implementation of the Dynamo mirror what the literature shows for supporting technological infrastructure BIM and mobile robot construction. To accomplish this research, an extensive literature review was completed, along with documentation of challenges during the development and implementation of the script.
