Optimization of Cascade Reservoir Operation for Power Generation, Based on an Improved lightning search algorithm

Cascade reservoir operation can ensure the optimal use of water and hydro-energy resources and improve the overall efficiency of hydropower stations. A large number of studies have used meta-heuristic algorithms to optimize reservoir operation, but there are still problems such as the inability to find a global optimal solution and slow convergence speed. lightning search algorithm (LSA) is a new meta-heuristic algorithm, which has the advantages such as high convergence speed and few parameters to be adjusted. However, there is no study on the application of LSA in reservoir operation. In this paper, LSA is used to solve the problem of reservoir operation optimization to verify its feasibility. We also propose an improved LSA algorithm, the frog-leaping-particle swarm optimization-LSA (FPLSA), which was improved by using multiple strategies, and we address the shortcomings of LSA such as low solution accuracy and the tendency to fall into local optima. After preliminary verification of ten test functions, the effect is significantly enhanced. Using the lower Jinsha River-Three Gorges cascade reservoirs as an example, the calculation is carried out and compared with other algorithms. The results show that the FPLSA performed better than the other algorithms in all of the indices measured which means it has stronger optimization ability. Under the premise of satisfying the constraints of cascade reservoirs, an approximate optimal solution could be found to provide an effective output strategy for cascade reservoir scheduling.

Metaheuristics have proven their efficiency in treating complex optimization problems. Generally, they produce good results quite close to optimal despite some weaknesses such as premature convergence and stagnation in the local optima. However, some techniques are used to improve the obtained results, one of them is the adoption of chaos theory. Including chaotic sequences in metaheuristics has proven its efficiency in previous studies by improving the performance and quality of the results obtained. In this study, we propose an improvement of the metaheuristic lightning search algorithm (LSA) by using chaos theory. In fact, the idea is to replace the values of random variables with a chaotic sequences generator. To prove the success of the metaheuristic-chaos theory association, we tested five chaotic version of lightning search algorithm on a benchmark of seven functions. Experimental results show that sine or singer map are the best choices to improve the efficiency of LSA, in particular with the lead projectile update.

Optimum Sizing of Hybrid PV, Wind, Battery and Diesel System Using lightning search algorithm

This paper presents a new methodology to optimize the configuration of the hybrid energy system with the wind farm, photovoltaic array, diesel generator and battery bank. Minimizing the annual cost is considered as an objective function with different constraints considering energy not served and renewable energy fraction. The lightning search algorithm is employed to obtain the best cost value of hybrid power system construction. Annual load data, solar irradiation and output power of wind turbines are used in the optimization analysis with a 10-min resolution. The behavior of different components of the system has been investigated. Simulation results give the optimal decision variables: number PV panels, wind turbines, battery banks and the capacity of the diesel generator with the electrification costs (capital cost, and fuel cost) over 1 year for ten scenarios of the hybrid energy system. The results confirm the potential of the proposed approach for the cheapest renewable energy generation.

Reactor control is a standout amongst the most vital issues in the nuclear power plant. In this paper, the optimal design of variable structure controller (VSC) based on the lightning search algorithm (LSA) is proposed for a nuclear reactor power system. The LSA is a new optimization algorithm. It is used to find the optimal parameters of the VSC instead of the trial and error method or experts of the designer. The proposed algorithm is used for the tuning of the feedback gains and the sliding equation gains of the VSC to prove a good performance. Furthermore, the parameters of the VSC are tuned by the genetic algorithm (GA). Simulation tests are carried out to verify the performance and robustness of the proposed LSA-based VSC compared with GA-based VSC. The results prove the high performance and the superiority of VSC based on LSA compared with VSC based on GA. (C) 2019 Korean Nuclear Society, Published by Elsevier Korea LLC.

-Due to the rise in environmental and economic limitations in today's world, the use of dispersed generation that often applies renewable energies, and electric vehicles is markedly increasing. On a large scale, either of these technologies can have damaging effects on the electricity grid;however, with proper energy management and programming, technologies, and energy storage resources can reduce these effects. Accordingly, the impact of the integrated aggregation of EVs to the grid for the charge/discharge process and the resulting grid instability, especially at the load peak time, is the main challenge usig of these vehicles. A challenge associated with these resources is their intrinsic uncertainty and stochastic scheduling. Herein, the stochastic scheduling of a power system in the presence of electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy sources (RESs) is solved via the optimization algorithm developed based on lightning search. The proposed model uses the probabilistic method to generate different scenarios for wind speed and solar irradiation coefficient;then, it modifies them via the scenario reduction method. In the proposed method, the conditional value at risk (CVaR) method is adopted to evaluate and manage the risk of the problem uncertainties. The use of the capacity stored in the EV batteries for overcoming the uncertainty of generation by wind and solar energy sources is also evaluated. Finally, the proposed method is tested on a modified sample system. The simulation results show that the power capacity stored in the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) stations greatly contributes to covering the uncertainty of wind and solar farms. The optimization algorithm is superior to other methods in local and global search.

This manuscript proposes a new metaheuristic optimization algorithm for solving the problems related to constraint optimization. The proposed algorithm is based on a nature-inspired algorithm like a lightning search algorithm and differential evolution algorithm. The proposed algorithm consists of two stages. In the first/exploitation/local stage, the fitness values are calculated by using a lightning search algorithm, the inclusion of weight factor in the lightning search algorithm, and differential evolution algorithm using the same population. In the second/global/exploration stage, the minimum value of fitness for each row population by the implementation of the above three algorithms is updated with the population. The first and second stage continues until certain criteria are achieved. The final minimum value is the optimized result. Validation of the proposed methodology is performed by using 60 benchmark functions. The proposed methodology is compared with seven other well-known algorithms namely the lightning search algorithm, differential evolution algorithm cuckoo search algorithm, particle swarm optimization algorithm, seagull optimization algorithm, chimp optimization algorithm, and mayfly algorithm by computing mean, standard deviation, best and worst value for 60 benchmark functions. The proposed methodology is also validated by implementing it in seven real-time constraint optimized problems. Furthermore, the efficiency of the proposed technique has been validated statistically for unimodal and multimodal test functions. The results show a better performance of the proposed optimized algorithm compared to other algorithms.

This paper investigates the parameter tuning problem of fractional-order proportional-integrator-derivative (FOPID) controller. A new meta-heuristic algorithm, namely lightning search algorithm (LSA), which was inspired by the lightning phenomena in nature, is employed to optimize the design of the FOPID controller. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method. Compared to the integer-order PID controller, the controlled benchmark system with the LSA tuned FOPID controller provides better responses with lower overshoot and faster settling time.

Electrical harmonics directly affect the power quality of electrical systems. In order to improve power quality of electrical systems, accurate estimation of electrical harmonics is crucial and essential. This paper presents a novel estimator design approach for harmonic estimation problems. The proposed harmonic estimator is based on lightning search algorithm (ISA) that is a powerful metaheuristic optimization method inspired of natural phenomenon of lightning. The performance of designed estimator has been comprehensively analyzed by considering time varying power signals that contain two well-known estimation problems in the literature. In addition, each of these problems are examined for three different levels of noise. Furthermore, performance of the designed estimator is compared with the previously reported estimators. The achieved estimation results for different case studies clearly indicated that the proposed ISA based harmonic estimator provides better estimation results in all experiments than that of our previous method based on modified artificial bee colony (MABC) optimization and other existing methods available in the literature.

The transition from centralized power grids to microgrids (MGs) has facilitated the increased integration of renewable energy sources (RES) to the power systems. However, the operational cost in MGs is highly dependent on planning decisions. Therefore, the optimal sizing and placement of RES will offer significant savings in operational costs and reduce power losses in the system. This study proposes a new technique for optimal sizing and placement of solar capacity in the electrical network to minimize the operational cost of conventional generators and real power losses. Due to the complexity and non-linearity associated with the problem, a new natural inspired optimization technique called lightning search algorithm (LSA) is developed to find the optimal solution. To assess LSA, differential evolution algorithm is also used to solve the same problem and a comparison is conducted to prove the superiority of LSA in reducing computation time. The optimization problem is applied to IEEE 14- and 30-bus systems with 24-hr load and solar profile. The obtained results verify the effectiveness of the proposed LSA approach to obtain the optimal sizing and placement of RES and reduce operational cost and power losses.

Solution of the Optimal Power Flow Problem Considering FACTS Devices by Using lightning search algorithm

In this study, the optimal power flow (OPF) problem including flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) devices, ever increasing in the planning and operating of the modern power systems has been addressed. The thyristor-controlled series capacitor and the thyristor-controlled phase shifter are used as FACTS devices. The solution to this problem is proposed by using a new heuristic algorithm known as the lightning search algorithm (LSA) based on the phenomenon of lighting. The LSA method is generalized from the mechanism of step leader propagation. The performance, success and robustness in the solution of this problem of the LSA are evaluated and tested on IEEE test systems, which are the modified IEEE 30-bus and IEEE 57-bus test systems. The multi-objective functions are used in the solution analysis processes of this problem. These objective functions are defined as the minimization of the fuel cost, minimization of the emission and minimization of the active power loss of the test system. The numerical results of the LSA are compared to different methods presented in the recent literature, which are ant lion optimizer, grey wolf optimizer, dragonfly algorithm, moth-flame optimization. The outcomes obtained from simulation study indicate the potential of the LSA method in solving the OPF problem including FACTS devices for operating and planning of the modern power systems.
