A Method for Predicting Long-Term Municipal Water Demands Under Climate Change

The accurate forecast of water demand is challenging for water utilities, specifically when considering the implications of climate change. As such, this is the first study that focuses on finding associations between monthly climate factors and municipal water consumption, using baseline data collected between 1980 and 2010. The aim of the study was to investigate the reliability and capability of a combination of techniques, including Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), to accurately predict long-term, monthly water demands. The principal findings of this research are as follows: a) SSA is a powerful method when applied to remove the impact of socio-economic variables and noise, and to determine a stochastic signal for long-term water consumption time series;b) ANN performed better when optimised using the lightning search algorithm (LSA-ANN) compared with other approaches used in previous studies, i.e. hybrid Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO-ANN) and Gravitational search algorithm (GSA-ANN);c) the proposed LSA-ANN methodology was able to produce a highly accurate and robust model of water demand, achieving a correlation coefficient of 0.96 between observed and predicted water demand when using a validation dataset, and a very small root mean square error of 0.025.

In this article, a new probabilistic operation management model for a microgrid (MG) with renewable sources such as solar and wind and also smart parking lots (PLs) is proposed. The model is based on demand response programing (DRP) with considering renewable sources and PLs uncertainties. An innovative scenario-based weighted objective function is proposed for the MG energy management system. The objective function is a combination of MG operation cost and the energy not supplied (ENS) fines for each scenario. Scenarios are weighted according to the probability of their occurrence in the objective function, so that more probable scenarios have a greater impact on the final cost. The generic Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) is used for generating the scenarios. For the proposed energy management model, the reliability index called loss of power supply probability (LPSP) is considered as a constraint. Also, the modified version of lightning search algorithm (LSA) is used due to higher accuracy. The proposed method is tested on the IEEE 33-bus test system. The simulation results indicated the good performance of the proposed method.

This article analyzed the performance of coordinated interline power flow controller (IPFC) and power system stabilizer (PSS) in the combined two-area restructured automatic load frequency control (ALFC) and automatic voltage regulator (AVR) system. Each area of the system has three generating companies as reheat thermal, wind, and diesel and three distribution companies (DISCOs). Appropriate physical constraints are included in thermal plant. Proportional plus fractional integral plus derivative with filter ((PIDF)-D-lambda) controller is introduced as secondary controller for both ALFC and AVR loop. lightning search algorithm is employed for optimization of the parameters of controller as well as PSS. The control performance of the proposed controller is compared with some classical integer-order controllers and reflects the dominance of the former over others with less peak deviation, settling time, and figure of demerit in all three transactions of restructured power system. The investigation of the impact of combined controlling action of IPFC and PSS reveals that the integration of the same improves the system dynamics effectively than the individual inclusion of IPFC and PSS. The coordinated IPFC-PSS provides less peak deviation, oscillation, as well as faster settling time and enhances the system performance. The sensitivity analysis of (PIDF)-D-lambda controller and PSS parameters for different DISCO participation matrix and amount of contract violation derived the robustness of the same.

Novel dynamic semiempirical proton exchange membrane fuel cell model incorporating component voltages

This paper introduces a novel dynamic semiempirical model for the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The proposed model not only considers the stack output voltage but also provides valid waveforms of component voltages, such as the no-load, activation, ohmic, and concentration voltages of the PEMFC stack system. Experiments under no-load, ramping load, and dynamic load conditions are performed to obtain various voltage components. According to experimental results, model parameters are optimised using the lightning search algorithm by providing valid theoretical ranges of parameters to the lightning search algorithm code. In addition, the correlation between the vapour and water pressures of the PEMFC is obtained to model the component voltages. Finally, all component voltages and the stack output voltage are validated by using the experimental/theoretical waveforms mentioned in previous research. The proposed model is also compared with a recently developed semiempirical model of PEMFC through particle swarm optimisation. The proposed dynamic model may be used in future in-depth studies on PEMFC behaviour and in dynamic applications for health monitoring and fault diagnosis.

Combined voltage and frequency control of a multi-area multisource system incorporating dish-Stirling solar thermal and HVDC link

This study highlights the significance of dish-Stirling solar thermal system (DSTS) and high voltage direct current (HVDC) link in the combined automatic load frequency control (ALFC) and automatic voltage regulator (AVR) model of the multi-area thermal-diesel plant. Appropriate generation rate constraints and governor dead band for the thermal plant are considered. A maiden attempt has been made to apply fractional order integral double derivative controller with derivative filter (FOIDDF) as a secondary controller for both ALFC and AVR loops. The performance of the FOIDDF controller is compared with some commonly used classical controllers. The lightning search algorithm is implemented for simultaneous optimisation of the controller parameters. The comparison shows the better performance of FOIDDF than others. The effect of the AVR loop on the ALFC loop is also analysed for the first time in the combined model. The investigation of the effect of DSTS and HVDC links reveals that their inclusion improves the system dynamics. The superiority of the proposed controller has been established for variable insolation of the DSTS. The rigorous sensitivity analysis of the different position and magnitude of disturbance, change in tie-line synchronising coefficient and different condition of the DSTS reflects the robustness of the proposed controller parameters obtained at the nominal condition.

Distribution Power System Reliability Assessment Considering Cold Load Pickup Events

Power system reliability measures for residential distribution networks have gained a lot of attention in recent years. This is due to the introduction of smart grids, where the quality of the delivered power becomes a crucial issue. In this paper, a new methodology to include cold load pickup (CLPU) events in the reliability assessment of power distribution systems is proposed. The developed methodology presents a platform to include CLPU events in the reliability assessment assuming an optimal systematic procedure is used to restore the affected load points. The methodology is applied on a test system using a state-of-the-art search technique named lightning search algorithm (LSA). The optimal plan takes into account electrical code protection system settings, system operation limits, and stochastic behavior of the load. The reliability indices for a base case without considering CLPU is compared with the case that considers CLPU assuming an optimal restoration. Both cases are compared further under fixed-restoration plans with different time intervals. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology to improve the distribution network reliability by considering the CLPU events.

This study highlights the performance of the combined automatic load frequency control and automatic voltage regulator model of Power System Stabilizer (PSS) integrated three unequal area multi-source system. The system is provided with suitable generation rate constraints and governor dead band along with time delay. Fractional order (PIDF)-D-lambda controller is proposed for this model and compared the performance of the same with other classical controllers. The controller and PSS parameters are optimized simultaneously using lightning search algorithm. The investigation reflects the superior performance of (PIDF)-D-lambda to integer order controllers. Analysis of the effect of system nonlinearities shows the increased sustained oscillations of the responses. The performance of PSS is investigated and reveals that the inclusion of PSS reduces the system oscillations, which leads to better system dynamics. Sensitivity analysis established the robust performance of (PIDF)-D-lambda controller and PSS parameters obtained at base condition.

This paper presents a nature inspired heuristic optimization algorithm based on lightning process called the lightning search algorithm (LSA) to solve optimization problems. It is derived from the natural phenomenon of lightning and the process of step leader propagation using the theory of fast particles. Three particle types are established to characterize the transition particles that generate the first step leader population, the space particles that try to become the leader, and the lead particle that represent the particle excited from best positioned step leader. To access the correctness and efficiency of the suggested algorithm, the LSA is verified using a well-used 10 benchmark functions with several characteristics. A comparative study with two other established methods is conducted to confirm and compare the performance of the LSA. The result exhibits that the LSA usually delivers better results compared with the other experimented methods with a high convergence rate.
