Extracting Major lines by Recruiting Zero-Threshold Canny Edge Links along Sobel Highlights

A method of extracting major lines from a 2D image is presented. The novelty lies in that major lines are recruited from the maximally generated yet well-thinned zero threshold Canny edge links based on the, so called, Sobel highlights as the guide for recruitment. The Sobel highlights introduced here represent the scores accumulated at individual pixels that measure their significance of forming line segments along Sobel edge orientations. The proposed method offers several advantages over conventional ones: it is 1) more powerful to extract cursive lines, in particular, with a larger curvature, 2) more effective to represent a line as a whole with less intermittent discontinuities, and 3) more straightforward to use as it relies on no sensitive edge thresholding. Experimentations verify that the proposed method outperforms LSD, a top performance major line detector currently available, by about 20% in the coverage of ground truth major lines as well as in the coverage per major line: an intermittent discontinuity indicator. The extraction cycle time is about 54 msec using the Intel i7-2600 CPU and 4G RAM under Window 7.

A line segment based approach for 3D motion estimation and tracking of multiple objects from a monocular image sequence is presented. Objects are described by means of 3D line segments, and their presence in the scene is associated with the detection of 2D line segments on the image plane. A change detection algorithm is applied to detect moving objects on the image plane and a Hough-based algorithm is used to individuate 2D line segments. 3D parameters of each line segment are estimated, at each time instant, by means of an extended Kalman filter (EKF), whose observations are the displacements of 2D line segment endpoints on the image plane. Results on both synthetic and real scenes are presented.

At present, there are a large number of mind-map images generated by different software on the Internet. These images contain rich knowledge that has been summarized by people for learning or teaching. In order to exploit knowledge and reconstruct the mind-map, we propose a scheme to parse the image of mind-maps. Firstly, we apply text detection and deep learning-based OCR models to extract the text content and the corresponding position information, and then use the line segment detection model to detect the line segments which represent the structural relationships between text blocks. The detected line segments will be matched with the text blocks with the image features of the mind map. The results are utilized to analyze the parent-child relationship between the text blocks. Experiments have been conducted to illustrate the reconstruction of mind-map with the parsing of the corresponding images.

Existing deep wireframe parsing methods typically focus on the semantic saliency of scene structural lines without paying particular attention to their visual saliency. As a result, these methods often face the challenge of multiple responses to proximate line segments or erroneous responses to nonstructural elements like shadows. To address this fundamental issue, a novel Contrast Guidance Module (CGM) is proposed. In the CGM, a low-level image attribute, i.e., the image contrast, is leveraged to measure the visual saliency of structural lines. The CGM augments feature maps in CNN networks, subtly balancing the interpretation of line segments with their contextual significance in the image. This approach not only refines detection accuracy but also enriches the understanding of spatial geometry. Extensive experiments conducted on benchmark datasets have shown that our proposed CGM consistently outperforms the current state-of-the-art methods.

Aircraft detection is a difficult task in the field of high remote sensing image application. In this paper we present an automatic system for aircraft detection based on locating the candidates of aircrafts and Support Vector Machine (SVM) to detect aircraft from high resolution remote sensing images. The system contains two main modules: in module one, we use segmentation based on statistical region merging and line segment to quickly locate the candidates of aircrafts;in module two, the precise detection process is accomplished by training the SVM classifier with combining the features of segmentation and line segment. Experimental results indicate that the system is effective in handling the remote sensing images. Therefore, it is a good choice for aircraft detection in high remote sensing images.

Hough transform and its revised versions are popular and powerful methods for line detection. However, most of them need edge images as input, and do not consider the scale selection. Besides, it is difficult for Hough-based methods to eliminate spurious peaks caused by noise points. This paper proposes a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) based approach for line segment detection. In the proposed algorithm, PCA is introduced for two purposes: to estimate the existence of line segment in a local region, and to extract line segment. The proposed approach mainly contains four steps: First, we give a multi-scale representation for the original image, thus a set of images with different scale is obtained;second, for each scale image, the gradient magnitude image is calculated by performing gradient operator. Then each gradient magnitude image is divided into overlapped windows respectively;third, for each window, we choose several representative points according to the gradient magnitude, and then perform PCA on these points;fourth, line segments are grouped according to PCA results and multi-scale analysis.

We present a novel technique to separate subpanels from stitched multipanel figures appearing in biomedical research articles. Since such figures may comprise images from different imaging modalities, separating them is a critical first step for effective biomedical content-based image retrieval (CBIR). The method applies local line segment detection based on the gray-level pixel changes. It then applies a line vectorization process that connects prominent broken lines along the subpanel boundaries while eliminating insignificant line segments within the subpanels. We have validated our fully automatic technique on a subset of stitched multipanel biomedical figures extracted from articles within the Open Access subset of PubMed Central repository, and have achieved precision and recall of 81.22% and 85.08%, respectively.

Aiming at the problems of low efficiency and large error of artificial puncture points for accurate correction of data in aerial photogrammetry hollow three-encryption, this paper proposes a right-angle image control point target detection method based on LSD (line segment detection) algorithm. In this method, the color information of the image is first enhanced by the Retinex algorithm;then the image is filtered bilaterally, which can well preserve the edge information while removing noise;then the LSD algorithm is used to extract the line segments, and the line segments are combined with the least squares fitting;The outermost right-angle edge is filtered out by angle, distance and length information, and finally the right-angle image control point is obtained by intersecting. In the case of complex background and target distortion, it can still maintain a high accuracy, and the positioning accuracy is significantly better than that of artificial punctures. Compared with the Radon and PPHT algorithms, the detection accuracy of the image control point group of the algorithm in this paper is significantly improved, indicating that its detection accuracy Accuracy is less affected by the shooting angle.

In CT image-guided interventional surgery, the rapid and accurate location of an ablation needle plays a key role in clinical diagnosis and treatment, especially for the design of surgical navigation system. However, there is no universal and effective method for detection of line segment, especially for precise extraction of the features. Aiming at the ablation needle and its tip in CT images, we propose the detection and location method based on an improved Hough transform, where features are extracted using some prior information and the clustering algorithm. The proposed method effectively removes noise and improves the real-time and accuracy of calculation. The numerical simulation results show that some morphological information can be accurately extracted and located, such as the coordinates of the endpoints and the length of the needle.

Accessible frontier is an important factor for mobile robot autonomous exploration. This paper presents a fast and robust frontier line segment extracting method based on fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm for robot exploration. Firstly, the proposed method divides robot's local occupancy map into sub-regions with same size. In the next step, this paper analyzes the characteristic of robot exploration frontier with occupancy grid map, and the optimal number of FCM cluster center in each sub-region is defined. Consequently, line segments corresponding to exploration frontiers based on fuzzy c-mean algorithm are calculated in sub-region level to alleviate the extensive computation. Following those steps, line segments merging, line endpoints extending and line excluding are conducted to get more accurate frontier segment parameters in global level. In the end, the effectiveness of proposed method is verified by experiments results in lab environment.
