Fitted value iteration (FVI) with ordinary least squares regression is known to diverge. We present a new method, "Expansion-Constrained Ordinary Least Squares" (ECOLS), that produces a linear approximation but also guarantees convergence when used with FVI. To ensure convergence, we constrain the least squares regression operator to be a non-expansion in the ∞-norm. We show that the space of function approximators that satisfy this constraint is more rich than the space of "averagers," we prove a minimax property of the ECOLS residual error, and we give an efficient algorithm for computing the coefficients of ECOLS based on constraint generation. We illustrate the algorithmic convergence of FVI with ECOLS in a suite of experiments, and discuss its properties.

This paper presents the design, development and testing of a 30kW, 200V/900V modular multilevel converter (MMC) based DC/DC converter prototype. An internal LCL circuit is used to provide voltage stepping and fault tolerance property. The converter comprises two five level MMC based on insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) and metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET). Due to low number of levels, selective harmonic elimination modulation (SHE) is used, which determines the switching angles in such a way that third harmonic is minimized whereas the fundamental component is a linear function of the modulation index. In addition, instead of using an expensive control board, three commercial control boards are embedded. This is required to implement the sophisticated DC/DC converter control algorithm. Simulation and experimental results are presented to demonstrate the converter performance in step up and down modes.

Dynamic neural field (DNF) is a popular mesoscopic model for cortical column interactions. It is widely studied analytically and successfully applied to physiological modelling, bio-inspired computation and robotics. DNF behavior emerges from distributed and decentralized interactions between computing units which makes it an interesting candidate as a cellular building-block for unconventional computations. That is why we are studying the hardware implementation of DNF on digital substratum (eg. FPGA). As shown in previous papers, this implementation requires several modifications to the equations in order to obtain decent hardware surface utilisation and clock speed. Here we show that the modification of the lateral weights kernel function is possible as long as certain conditions, enumerated in Amari's seminal work are respected. Thank to metaheuristic optimisation it is possible to find the right parameters for two behavioral scenarii of bio-inspired computation interest. We show that the two most hardware-friendly kernels (difference of linear functions and piece-wise function) are as easy to tune as the traditional Mexican hat kernel. However the difference of exponential kernel is more difficult to tune.

Direct expressions for the magnetic anisotropy constants are given at a finite temperature from a microscopic viewpoint. The present derivation assumes that the Hamiltonian is a linear function with respect to the magnetization direction. We discuss in detail the first-order anisotropy constant K-1 and show that our present results reproduce previous results. We applied our method to Nd2Fe14B compounds and confirmed that the present method can reproduce the temperature dependence of the magnetocrystalline anisotoropy constants K-1, K-2, and K-3 well. Mathematical simulation of melted slag cooling by a system of metal balls

The problem of thermal conductivity in a sphere is solved analytically in unadjoined edge conditions in the case when the boundary conditions are a linear function of time. A computer model is constructed for the accumulating ability of the system of metal balls for a cyclic regime of cooling of a melted slag, which makes it possible to establish and analyze main features of operation of a slag processing unit due to thermal stabilization of its structure. The correctness of the developed computer model is verified by comparing the analytic and numerical solutions;the peculiarities of the numerical solution of the heat conduction equation for a ball, associated with unadjoined edge conditions are analyzed.

Self-timed circuits have the unique properties of a lack of competition. One of the main problems of such circuits design - the analysis on self-timing (elements switching) and the construction of large circuits. In traditional approach computational complexity is so great, that it does not allow to analyze the most important practical circuits. In the functional approach we propose hierarchical method: on the lower level logic functions of elements are analyzed, on the top - the relationships between blocks. The complexity of calculations here is close to the linear function of the size of circuit. Such approach solves one of the main problems of self-timed circuits design - analysis circuits of any size. The efficiency of the proposed methods was confirmed by the developed SW.

The empirical analysis of building the time series model as a combination of a linear function of time, the partial sum of the Fourier series and specific procedures of the Fourier coefficients has been considered in the report. The experiments have been conducted with real data of different nature. It is noted that the consistent series expansion into the Fourier sine and cosine transformations and further optimization of the coefficients give a better result than without optimization. On the basis of this expansion a number of experiments to estimate the forecast horizon have been carried out.

Given a bent function f(x) of n variables, its max-weight and min-weight functions are introduced as the Boolean functions f⁺(x) and f^-(x) whose supports are the sets {a∈F2n|w(f⊕la)=2n-1+2n2-1} and {a∈F2n|w(f⊕la)=2n-1-2n2-1} respectively, where w(f⊕ l_a) denotes the Hamming weight of the Boolean function f(x) ⊕ l_a(x) and l_a(x) is the linear function defined by a∈F2n. f⁺(x) and f^-(x) are proved to be bent functions. Furthermore, combining the 4 minterms of 2 variables with the max-weight or min-weight functions of a 4-tuple (f(x) , f₁(x) , f₂(x) , f₃(x)) of bent functions of n variables such that f(x) ⊕ f₁(x) ⊕ f₂(x) ⊕ f₃(x) = 1 , a bent function of n+ 2 variables is obtained. A family of 4-tuples of bent functions satisfying the above condition is introduced, and finally, the number of bent functions we can construct using the method introduced in this paper are obtained. Transverse momentum (PT) distributions of projectilelike fragments produced at intermediate energy are investigated. PT distributions of fragments with mass AF=10–37, produced from an Ar40 beam with E=95MeV/nucleon and a Be target, are observed as a function of fragment velocity by using the Rikagaku Kenkyusho (RIKEN) Projectile Fragment Separator at RIKEN. The width of PT distribution (σT) decreases monotonically with longitudinal momentum (PL). The decreasing trend shows a clear dependence on fragment mass. The observed σT is analyzed with a linear function and successfully reproduced by a parameter to characterize the decreasing trend. σT at the primary beam velocity shows good agreement with the Goldhaber formula, which is obtained on the basis of the contribution of the Fermi momentum. In contrast, the σT at the center of the PL distribution as determined by using the fits and parametrized energy loss in the fragmentation process is consistent with the width, which includes an additional contribution from the orbital deflection of the projectile. The antisymmetrized molecular-dynamics calculation indicates that the contribution of impact parameters is an important factor in understanding the behavior of the PT distribution. In addition, the practical formulation for σT obtained in the present study enables a reliable characterization of the fragments, which would be applicable to various research fields involving, for example, radioactive nuclear beams.

We identify a broad class of decentralized output-feedback LQG systems for which the optimal control strategies have a simple and intuitive estimation structure. We consider cases for which the coupling of dynamics among subsystems and the inter-controller communication are characterized by the same directed graph. For the class of graphs known as multitrees, we show that each controller need only estimate the states of the sub-systems it affects (its descendants) as well as the sub-systems it observes (its ancestors). The optimal control action for each controller is a linear function of the estimate it computes and the estimates computed by its ancestors. Moreover, all state estimates may be updated recursively, much like a Kalman filter.
