Design and verification of model predictive control for micro-turboshaft engine

In this article, a nonlinear model predictive control algorithm for a micro-turboshaft engine is designed. The control effect is verified by a bench test. First, a micro-turboshaft engine test bench is built, and the open-loop control experiment was carried out on it. Based on experiment data, a linear parameter varying prediction model is established. Then, by online rolling optimization based on multistep output prediction, together with feedback correction, a nonlinear model predictive control algorithm is obtained. The influence of algorithm parameters on the control effect is studied, and reasonable prediction period M, control period N, and control coefficient R are designed. Finally, the application of nonlinear model predictive control in micro-turboshaft engine is verified by bench test. The results show that with the changing of pitch angle, nonlinear model predictive control algorithm has a faster adjustment speed and smaller overshoot, compared with the conventional cascade proportional-integral control with feedforward. It is proofed that nonlinear model predictive control can be applied to a real turboshaft engine and has a better control effect.

This paper concerns the input-output model identification and zone model predictive control of an agro-hydrological system modeled by a partial differential equation. The primary control objective is to maintain the soil moisture within a desired range which is suitable for grass grow. There is also a secondary control objective which is to reduce the total irrigation amount. First, a linear parameter varying (LPV) model is identified for controller design purpose using a maximum likelihood gradient-based iterative estimation method. Then, based on the LPV model, a zone model predictive control (MPC) is designed which uses an output disturbance and state observer to reduce model-plant mismatch and an asymmetric target zone to reduce irrigation amount under weather uncertainties while maintaining the soil moisture within the target range. Simulation studies show that the LPV model is a good approximation of the original nonlinear model and effectively reduces the online computational load of the MPC, and that the proposed zone MPC can lead to significant water conservation. Influence of the Tensor Product model Representation of qLPV models on the Feasibility of linear Matrix Inequality Based Stability Analysis

The paper investigates and proves the statement, that the convex hull of the polytopic tensor product (TP) model representation influences the feasibility of linear matrix inequality (LMI) based stability analysis methods. The proof is based on a complex stability analysis example of a given quasi linear parameter varying (qLPV) state-space model. Specifically, the three degree of freedom (3-DoF) aeroelastic wing section model including Stribeck friction is used as the tool for the example model. The proof is achieved by utilizing TP model transformation and LMI based tools. As a first step, numerous TP model type control solutions holding different convex hulls are systematically derived of the qLPV model via LMI based control design methods. As a second step, each control solution is further equivalently transformed for different TP model representations holding different convex hulls. Finally, the stability of all solutions over all TP model representations are checked via LMI based stability analysis methods. As a result of the two steps, a two dimensional (2D) convex hull space is attained for the 3-DoF aeroelastic wing section model. The two dimensions are denoted by the LMI based control design and the LMI based stability analysis for different convex hulls. Based on the numerical results, a detailed, comprehensive analysis is provided. The paper as a novelty proves the statement, that the polytopic TP model representation of a given control solution strongly influences the feasibility of LMI based stability analysis methods.

Improved control performance of the 3-DoF aeroelastic wing section: a TP model based 2D parametric control performance optimization

Based on the most recent Tensor Product model transformation solutions, the paper presents an improved control performance for the most recent version of the three Degree of Freedom aeroelastic wing section model including Stribeck friction, according to signals pitch, plunge, trailing edge and control value, based on practical engineering criteria such as overshoot, undershoot, signal end values and settling time. This is achieved through proposing a novel two dimensional parametric convex hull manipulation based method for Tensor Product model transformation based Control Design Frameworks. The approach provides two TP model representations for the different requirements of the controller and observer of a given model, opening the possibility to utilize the TP model transformation's convex hull manipulation potential in control performance optimization for a separate optimization of the two TP model representations. Numerical simulation results are provided to illustrate the control performance improvements of the aeroelastic wing section model through the proposed 2D parametric convex hull manipulation based design method.

The present paper proves that the vertexes of the tensor product (TP) model type polytopic representation of a given quasi linear parameter varying (qLPV) state-space model strongly interfere with the feasibility regions of linear matrix inequality (LMI)-based control design methods. Furthermore this is valid both for the LMI-based feasibility of the controller and the observer design, but the influence differs for the controller and the observer system components. More specifically, the factors influencing the feasibility regions of the LMI-based control design include: (i) the manipulation of the vertexes' position;and (ii) the size and complexity of the TP model type polytopic representation, i.e. the number of the vertexes contained in the TP model representation. The proof is based on a complex control design example, where the influence of these factors stated above can be easily and clearly indicated. Furthermore the paper shows via the example that the maximal parameter space of the controller and observer also depends on these factors. The example model consists of the complex Nonlinear Aeroelastic Test Apparatus (NATA) model of the three degree of freedom aeroelastic wing section model including Stribeck friction and the control design method is based on the relaxed TP model transformation-based control design framework that supports the flexible manipulation of these factors.

Boiler superheated steam temperature control is of great importance for the safety and economy of thermal power unit. This article presents a nonlinear model identification method for the superheated steam temperature system, based on the unit load as a time varying parameter. The linear parameter varying (LPV) model, which has been established by using the unit historical data, is suitable for control studies, and it can reflect the global dynamic characteristics of the object. To solve the model parameters estimation in high dimensional problem, the evolutionary acceleration factor is introduced to the quantum particle swarm optimization (A-QPSO) algorithm to optimize the model parameters. The validity of the modified algorithm A-QPSO is verified through optimizing several classical high-dimensional standard test functions. The A-QPSO improved the optimization efficiency, and optimized result is very close to the optimal value. Finally, the proposed method is applied to the identification of a power plant superheated steam temperature process, and the results show that the optimized superheated steam temperature model is of high accuracy and the proposed method is feasible. This paper deals with providing the secondary control using a large population of thermostatically controlled loads, in particular electrical space heaters. model predictive control approach is used for control system design. The controller is based on extended 1D bin state transition model, which is designed to be linear parameter varying model in order to include possibility to control the temperature setpoints. Unlike other systems for performing ancillary services, this controller performs two functions simultaneously: secondary control itself and the function of heaters' thermostats. This extended functionality of the controller gives more possibilities for optimization of the population performance. The obtained results show that the designed control system meets the requirements on the secondary control. The proposed ideas can further be used to develop a control system based on 2D bin state transition model that will provide possibility to take into account more accurate dynamics of the second order equivalent thermal parameters model.

This paper presents a linear parameter varying (LPV) approach to model and control two-mass systems with backlash. The maximum amplitude of the backlash angle is assumed to be unknown and variable having no knowledge about the upper and lower bounds of it. Proper affine state space model together with the admissible variations of the LPV parameters is designed in order to realize a viable convex polytope. Utilizing H-infinity, LPV lemmas and theories lead to a set of linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). By solving these LMIs, appropriate scheduled state feedback gains are obtained. The designed robust control strategy can easily handle the variations of the backlash angle and load disturbance torque. A simulated two-mass backlash system verifies the efficiency of the designed control law.

Performance improvement in grid-connected fuel cell power plant: An LPV robust control approach

This paper presents a robust control scheme for power electronic interfaces of grid-tied fuel cell power plant. Firstly, a linear matrix inequality (LMI)-based PID controller is designed to control the duty cycle of the boost DC/DC converter, aiming to adjust the output DC voltage to an arbitrary reference value. Afterwards, linear parameter-varying (LPV) technique is utilized for robust control of grid-connected inverter to follow the desired real and reactive power demand of the grid, considering time-varying load and uncertain grid-impedance. Taking uncertainty of the system into account, all admissible variations are considered as a convex polytope. To guarantee a prescribed disturbance attenuation level and improve the transient response of the closed-loop system, H-infinity approach is exploited with pole placement consideration in terms of LMIs. Simulation results of the proposed controller compared to those of conventional PI controller, in presence of grid-voltage disturbance, validate high efficiency of the designed control. Optimal design of linear subsynchronous damping controllers for stabilising torsional interactions under all possible operating conditions

Torsional damping controllers, such as supplementary excitation damping controllers (SEDCs), are widely used to stabilise subsynchronous resonance (SSR) induced by torsional interactions (TIs) between turbo-generators and series-compensated power systems. However, because of the changeable operating situations of a power system, it is a great challenge to design them to guarantee torsional stability under all possible operating conditions. This study proposes a global optimal control-design procedure for tuning SEDCs to accommodate the variation of system conditions. Considering TI is a small-signal stability issue, the non-linear power system is converted into a family of linear parameter varying models and the parameter-tuning task for multiple SEDCs is formulated into a multi-model constrained non-linear optimisation problem. A global optimisation procedure based on genetic algorithm and simulated annealing is designed to efficiently solve this problem and obtain a set of robust or several sets of gain-scheduling SEDCs. The proposed method is applied to a multi-machine series-compensated power system. The results of both eigenvalue analysis and time-domain simulation have fully demonstrated the effectiveness of the optimised SEDCs in stabilising SSR under all possible operating conditions.
