Equivalent Expressions and Performance Analysis of SLNR precoding Schemes: A Generalisation to Multi-Antenna Receivers

In this letter, equivalent expressions of transmit precoding solutions based on the maximum signal-to-leakage-plus-noise ratio (SLNR) are derived for multiuser MIMO systems with multi-antenna receivers. The performance of the SLNR precoding scheme is also analysed based on this equivalent form. Further, it is shown that the SLNR scheme can be viewed as a generalised channel regularisation technique and the conditions for an equivalence between the SLNR, the Regularised Block Diagonalisation (RBD) and the Generalised MMSE Channel Inversion (GMI method 2) schemes are given. Consequently, the performance analysis in this letter can be extended to the RBD and GMI schemes. This generalises the equivalence between the SLNR and MMSE schemes and its useful implications, from the case of single-antenna to multi-antenna receivers.

This letter proposes a novel optimized non-unitary linear precoding design for orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBCs). We dig out the transmission potentials by the analysis from eigen-space point of view according to the unique structure of OSTBCs. The proposed precoding form is proved to be theoretically optimized. Compared with the classical unitary Grassmannian codebook design, in the sense of restriction on the time average power of transmit signal, the proposed non-unitary codebook further improves the overall performance of practical systems. The new constraint on codebook size to guarantee full diversity order is given and proved. The advantages of our proposed design are verified in the numerical simulations.

In this paper, we study the performance of regularized channel inversion precoding in MISO broadcast channels with confidential messages under imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). We obtain an approximation for the achievable secrecy sum-rate which is almost surely exact as the number of transmit antennas and the number of users grow to infinity in a fixed ratio. Simulations prove this anaylsis accurate even for finite-size systems. For FDD systems, we determine how the CSIT error must scale with the SNR, and we derive the number of feedback bits required to ensure a constant high-SNR rate gap to the case with perfect CSIT. For TDD systems, we study the optimum amount of channel training that maximizes the high-SNR secrecy sum-rate.

Differential codebook precoding is known as a capacity-achieving precoding scheme when the channel variation is slow. However, at medium to high channel variation speeds the differential codebook optimized for low channel variation speeds performs poorly compared to other precoding schemes, thereby limiting its application to practical systems. In this paper, we apply an alternating codebook technique to differential precoding to improve its robustness to high channel variability. The basic idea is creating multiple (instead of single) differential codebooks optimized for various channel variation speeds, and alternating these codebooks over time providing a virtually larger differential codebook, containing various precoding matrices optimized for different speeds, without the need for additional feedback overhead. Simulation results show that the proposed alternating differential codebook scheme not only retains the superior performance of differential precoding at low channel variation rate but, at the same time, reduces the sensitivity to high speed channel variations, resulting in a more practical precoding scheme.

Since the introduction of the Diversity-Multiplexing Tradeoff (DMT) by Zheng and Tse for ML reception in frequency-flat MIMO channels, some results have been obtained also for the DMT of frequency-selective MIMO channels and for the DMT of suboptimal receivers such as linear (LEs) and decision-feedback equalizers (DFEs) for frequency-selective SIMO channels or frequency-flat MIMO channels. We have recently extended these results to the case of linear receivers for frequency-selective MIMO channels. However, the diversity properties of linear receivers turn out to be fairly catastrophic. In this paper we show that full diversity can be restored by the introduction of a convolutive linear MIMO precoding scheme that we showed earlier to allow to attain the optimal DMT for ML or DFE detection (in the frequency-flat case). The precoder needs to be used with a moderate amount of redundancy in the form of zero-padding, and with a MMSE design for the linear equalizer. A MMSE-ZF design also benefits substantially from the precoding. The proposed scheme is a significant extension of an earlier SISO result by Tepelenlioglu to the MIMO case.

Massive MIMO in the UL/DL of Cellular Networks: How Many Antennas Do We Need?

We consider the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) of non-cooperative multi-cellular time-division duplexing (TDD) systems, assuming that the number N of antennas per base station (BS) and the number K of user terminals (UTs) per cell are large. Our system model accounts for channel estimation, pilot contamination, and an arbitrary path loss and antenna correlation for each link. We derive approximations of achievable rates with several linear precoders and detectors which are proven to be asymptotically tight, but accurate for realistic system dimensions, as shown by simulations. It is known from previous work assuming uncorrelated channels, that as N -> infinity while K is fixed, the system performance is limited by pilot contamination, the simplest precoders/detectors, i.e., eigenbeamforming (BF) and matched filter (MF), are optimal, and the transmit power can be made arbitrarily small. We analyze to which extent these conclusions hold in the more realistic setting where N is not extremely large compared to K. In particular, we derive how many antennas per UT are needed to achieve eta% of the ultimate performance limit with infinitely many antennas and how many more antennas are needed with MF and BF to achieve the performance of minimum mean-square error (MMSE) detection and regularized zero-forcing (RZF), respectively.

Transmitter precoding strategies in broadcast systems generally assume perfect knowledge of channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter. In this paper, we study linear precoding with arbitrary error in the CSI from an estimation theoretic point of view. We derive a Bayesian Cramer-Rao type bound on the sum mean squared error (SMSE) achievable at the receiver for any linear precoding scheme for arbitrary feedback noise and channel fading. We next specialize this result to power constrained precoders. It is shown that the regularity conditions of the bound may be significantly weakened for power constrained precoders. Interestingly, we obtain a bound whose validity depends on rather weak conditions of continuity and differentiability on the joint distribution of the channel and feedback. We demonstrate the bound by applying it to Gaussian, Nakagami-m and Weibull fading models, with the assumption of feedback corrupted by additive Gaussian noise.

Combining wprecoding and orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBCs) can obtain full-diversity order and provide additional array gain. This paper proposes optimal linear precoding and quantization for OSTBCs with erroneous feedback. Lloyd algorithm is used for designing codebooks with noisy quantized feedback in general case. In two extreme cases, the transmitter can obtain perfect CSI and no CSI available, the optimal unquantized precoder for each case are presents and quantization scheme is analysed. The result shows that the quantized codebook proposed in this paper can obtain better performance compared to open loop systems when feedback link is erroneous

This paper considers joint transceiver designs for single-user multiple-input, multiple-output systems employing improper constellations such as binary phase shift-keying and M-ary amplitude shift-keying (M-ASK). Proposed are novel joint linear transceivers that minimize the total mean squared error of the symbol estimation at the output of the decoder. The joint linear transceiver designs are carried out for both cases of perfect channel state information (CSI) and imperfect CSI at the transmitter and receiver. For the case of imperfect CSI, the channel model takes into account both transmit and receive correlations as well as the channel estimation error. The superiority of the proposed transceivers over the previously-proposed designs is verified by simulation results.

Cognitive Orthogonal Precoder for Two-Tiered Networks Deployment

In this work, the problem of cross-tier interference in a two-tiered (macro-cell and cognitive small-cells) network, under the complete spectrum sharing paradigm, is studied. A new orthogonal precoder transmit scheme for the small base stations, called multi-user Vandermonde-subspace frequency division multiplexing (MU-VFDM), is proposed. MU-VFDM allows several cognitive small base stations to coexist with legacy macro-cell receivers, by nulling the small-to macrocell cross-tier interference, without any cooperation between the two tiers. This cleverly designed cascaded precoder structure, not only cancels the cross-tier interference, but avoids the co-tier interference for the small-cell network. The achievable sum-rate of the small-cell network, satisfying the interference cancelation requirements, is evaluated for perfect and imperfect channel state information at the transmitter. Simulation results for the cascaded MU-VFDM precoder show a comparable performance to that of state-of-the-art dirty paper coding technique, for the case of a dense cellular layout. Finally, a comparison between MU-VFDM and a standard complete spectrum separation strategy is proposed. Promising gains in terms of achievable sum-rate are shown for the two-tiered network w.r.t. the traditional bandwidth management approach.
