linear precoding is a well known effective technique to boost the performance of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. A drawback of linearly precoded OFDM (LP-OFDM) systems is the high computational complexity required by maximum-likelihood (ML) detection, which is mandatory to capture all the channel diversity. Conversely, low-complexity techniques, such as the linear minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) detection, suffer from non-negligible performance loss with respect to the ML performance. In this paper, we propose a detection technique that performs a local ML (LML) search in the neighborhood of the output provided by the MMSE detector. The trade-off between performance and complexity of the proposed LML-MMSE detector, which fall between the ones of the MMSE and ML detectors, can be nicely adjusted by appropriately setting the neighborhood size. Simulation results show that the LML-MMSE detector with minimum neighborhood size outperforms a block decision-feedback equalization (DFE) approach, while preserving a similar complexity.

Robust Transmission in Downlink Multiuser MISO Systems: A Rate-Splitting Approach

We consider a downlink multiuser MISO system with bounded errors in the channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). We first look at the robust design problem of achieving max-min fairness amongst users (in the worst-case sense). Contrary to the conventional approach adopted in literature, we propose a rather unorthodox design based on a rate-splitting (RS) strategy. Each user's message is split into two parts, a common part and a private part. All common parts are packed into one super common message encoded using a public codebook, while private parts are independently encoded. The resulting symbol streams are linearly precoded and simultaneously transmitted, and each receiver retrieves its intended message by decoding both the common stream and its corresponding private stream. For CSIT uncertainty regions that scale with SNR (e.g., by scaling the number of feedback bits), we prove that a RS-based design achieves higher max-min (symmetric) degrees of freedom (DoF) comparedwith conventional designs (NoRS). For the special case of nonscaling CSIT (e.g., fixed number of feedback bits), and contrary to NoRS, RS can achieve a nonsaturating max-min rate. We propose a robust algorithm based on the cutting-set method coupled with the weighted minimum mean-square error (WMMSE) approach, and we demonstrate its performance gains over state-of-the-art designs. Finally, we extend the RS strategy to address the quality of service (QoS) constrained power minimization problem, and we demonstrate significant gains over NoRS-based designs.

For multiuser MISO systems with bounded uncertainties in the Channel State Information (CSI), we consider two classical robust design problems: maximizing the minimum rate subject to a transmit power constraint, and power minimization under a rate constraint. Contrary to conventional strategies, we propose a Rate-Splitting (RS) strategy where each message is divided into two parts, a common part and a private part. All common parts are packed into one super common message encoded using a shared codebook and decoded by all users, while private parts are independently encoded and retrieved by their corresponding users. We prove that RS-based designs achieve higher max-min Degrees of Freedom (DoF) compared to conventional designs (NoRS) for uncertainty regions that scale with SNR. For the special case of non-scaling uncertainty regions, RS contrasts with NoRS and achieves a non-saturating max-min rate. In the power minimization problem, RS is shown to combat the feasibility problem arising from multiuser interference in NoRS. A robust design of precoders for RS is proposed, and performance gains over NoRS are demonstrated through simulations.

In this paper, we present a transmission model for a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel with perfect channel state information (CSI). We intend to exploit the available CSI through the use of a precoder based on the minimum Euclidean distance (d(min)) criterion. We also introduce a low density parity check coding block in order to improve the system performance. We consider a two-stream 4QAM-MIMO transmission scheme (4 bits per transmitted symbol vector) associated to a non-binary LDPC (NB-LDPC) code over GF(2(4)). The addition of the precoder in this system is studied. Simulations are made in order to show the interest of the association of the dmin-based precoder with NB-LDPC codes, which is particularly well suited for LDPC codes with high rates.

Cyclic-prefix (CP) insertion in a single or multi-carrier system transforms the frequency-selective channel into a set of parallel flat channels, thus reducing the equalization complexity considerably. To harness the channel multipath diversity in this parallelized system the use of error control codes and/or linear precoding are proposed in the literature. A more recent result shows that maximum diversity can be achieved by lattice-reduction aided equalization together with precoded OFDM transmission. In this paper, we show that full diversity lattice-reduction is possible without requiring either precoding or error control codes. In earlier work it was shown that some cyclic-prefix systems have a diversity that is rate-dependent;we show that lattice-reduction diversity does not follow the same pattern of behavior. We also explore and expose important distinctions between diagonal and non-diagonal equalization for cyclic prefix systems.

This paper addresses relay design for a wireless multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) switching scheme that enables data exchange among multiple users. Here, a multi-antenna relay linearly precodes the received (uplink) signals from multiple users before forwarding the signal in the downlink, where the purpose of precoding is to let each user receive its desired signal with interference from other users suppressed. The problem of optimizing the precoder based on sum-rate maximization criteria is typically non-convex and difficult to solve. The main contribution of this paper is that we show the sumrate maximization problem can be converted to an equivalent weighted sum-MSE minimization problem and can therefore be solved using an iterative algorithm proposed in our previous work. Asymptotic analysis reveals that, with properly chosen initial values, the proposed iterative algorithms are asymptotically optimal in both high and low signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) regimes for MIMO switching, either with or without self-interference cancellation (a.k.a., physical-layer network coding). Numerical results show that the optimized MIMO switching scheme based on the proposed algorithms significantly outperforms existing approaches in the literature.

Contrary to the common belief that the carrier frequency offset (CFO) in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system would adversely impact on system performance, this paper shows that the CFO actually has the effect of linear precoding among transmitted data symbols and hence can be exploited to improve the diversity performance over frequency-selective fading channels. With both analysis and Monte Carlo simulation, it is proved that an OFDM system with CFO equal to half of the subcarrier spacing can potentially achieve the performance of diversity order four by the maximum-likelihood detection and demonstrate a 5 dB improvement using the minimum mean squared error equalization.

In this paper, we develop a general framework to analyze the rate performance of a two-tier MIMO heterogeneous network (HetNet) with wireless backhaul under spatial multiplexing. We consider linear precoding and receive filtering in the presence of interference from uplink and downlink transmissions. We find that the sum rate per area of the HetNet is sensitive to the network load, i.e., the number of users served by each base station. We show that a two-tier HetNet with wireless backhaul can achieve higher sum rate per area than a one-tier cellular network. However, this requires the bandwidth division between radio access links and wireless backhaul to be optimally designed according to the load conditions.

This paper proposes and analyzes efficient rate and power allocation algorithms for MIMO-OFDMA broadcast channels based on linearly precoded orthogonal space-time block codes. The weighted sum-rate maximization problem is considered for both continuous and discrete rate allocation schemes. Since this problem is non-convex and combinatorial in nature, the Lagrange dual decomposition method is used to find an accurate near-optimal solution. The effects of using different MIMO configurations and realistic channel models with space and frequency correlation over the weighted sum-rate of the system is considered.

Continuous phase modulation (CPM) has many desirable features such as power efficiency and spectrum efficiency. This paper considers continuous phase modulation in massive MIMO system. Especially in cellular wireless system, we can obtain more accurate channel state information in uplink time division duplexing (TDD) transmission via employing different CPM modulation index h. On the basis of that scheme, the method of linear precoding can achieve better performance in the reverse link. Finally, simulated results have verified the proposed system.
