Robust, reliable and high data rate transmission systems are key components of underground information systems particularly in the case of driverless ones. In this context, wireless systems must be able to maximize data rate and/or robustness while avoiding increases in transmitting power and/or in transmission bandwidth. MIMO techniques are today well known in the scientific community for indoor applications where the propagation channel experiences multipath effects. The work presented in this paper concerns the evaluation of conventional MIMO techniques such as the Alamouti code, spatial multiplexing, and linear precoding in tunnels environments usually considered as correlated channels. After the choice of the best suited channel model and antenna configuration, the simulation of the physical layer based on Wi-Fi IEEE802.11a/g standards gives rise to the comparison of the MIMO algorithms.

In this contribution we propose a method to increase the energy efficiency of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based femtocells. This is accomplished with no impact to the current power consumption, radio frequency (RF) circuitry, link adaptation strategies, bandwidth and transmit power. The proposed technique recycles redundant resources of OFDM transmissions (e.g., guard bands and cyclic prefixes), introduced to combat frequency selectivity. We borrow the underlying idea from a technique called cognitive interference alignment (CIA). Interestingly, our novel approach does not suffer from the same issues inherent to CIA, such as synchronization at the primary receiver and channel knowledge related complications. Nevertheless, it introduces a new issue related to the interference from the OFDM signal, which prompted the adoption of an adequate linear receiver at the femtocell user equipment. Numerical findings demonstrate that spectral efficiency gains are achieved, improving the energy efficiency of the femtocell by up to 20% for the simulated scenario.

The present work focuses on obtaining better Bit Error Rate performance (BER), in precoded Single User-Multiple Input, Multiple Output-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing, SU-MIMO-OFDM systems in downlink through the use of Index Coding IC and a novel optimization procedure to select the Index Coding Matrix (ICM). A discrete model of the MIMO-OFDM system is presented which is efficient in signal generation and subsequent signal detection and identifies parameters that can be optimized, i.e, the optimal choice of the ICM, in order to improve the BER performance of the system.

Massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) is the key technology to provide higher spectral efficiency (SE) and data throughput in the fifth-generation (5G) wireless technology. Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) makes the massive MIMO system more efficient. In most of the literature, channel is assumed to be reciprocal. But, the imperfection of the channel reciprocity affects the system performance due to RF mismatch in the transceiver at the base station. In this paper, the performance of energy-efficient multi-user massive MIMO system is investigated considering channel reciprocity error. The performance like harvested energy, achievable rate and optimization of data throughput by increasing spectral efficiency of massive MIMO without increasing the bandwidth and cell density are analyzed. Various linear precoding techniques are used to maximize the spectral efficiency. Further, Pilot reuse technique is used to minimize the pilot contamination and co-channel interference. Bit error rate (BER) performance is evaluated and found to be negligible due to the large antenna array at the base station.

In this paper, we consider a downlink (DL) multiuser (MU) multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) channel with linear precoding where the base station simultaneously schedules several user terminals on the same frequency sub-band. We assume imperfect (or quantized) per-user channel state information at the base station and present two types of channel state information (CSI) reports from user terminals, namely, the CSI report that assumes the single-user (SU) MIMO transmissions and the enhanced CSI feedback report that assumes the MU-MIMO transmissions, and in the latter case we consider both uniform and nonuniform power allocations. To improve the MU-MIMO system performance, we propose signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) approximation techniques that utilize the quantized CSI available at the base station and improve the rate matching. We also introduce user pooling techniques which enable a reduction in feedback signaling overhead via per-user feedback mode selection. The proposed techniques also allow unconstrained user pairing at the base station scheduler and hence enable dynamic switching between SU and MU MIMO transmissions. The simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed MU-MIMO enhancement techniques.

Massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems are typically designed under the assumption of linear power amplifiers (PAs). However, PAs are typically most energy-efficient when operating close to their saturation point, where they cause non-linear distortion. Moreover, when using conventional precoders, this distortion coherently combines at the user locations, limiting performance. As such, when designing an energy-efficient massive MIMO system, this distortion has to be managed. In this work, we propose the use of a neural network (NN) to learn the mapping between the channel matrix and the precoding matrix, which maximizes the sum rate in the presence of this non-linear distortion. This is done for a third-order polynomial PA model for both the single and multi-user case. By learning this mapping a significant increase in energy efficiency is achieved as compared to conventional precoders and even as compared to perfect digital pre-distortion (DPD), in the saturation regime.

In this paper, we study physical layer security for the downlink of cellular networks. In a cellular network, the confidential messages transmitted to each mobile user can be eavesdropped by the other users in the same cell and also by the users in the other cells. We model the locations of base stations and mobile users as two independent two-dimensional Poisson point processes. By combining tools from stochastic geometry and random matrix theory, we analyze the secrecy rates achievable with regularized channel inversion (RCI) precoding under Rayleigh fading. Our analysis shows that unlike isolated cells, the secrecy rate in a cellular network does not grow monotonically with the transmit power. Moreover, we find that the network tends to be in secrecy outage if the transmit power grows unbounded. Furthermore, we show that there exists an optimal value for the base station deployment density that maximizes the secrecy rate.

In this paper, we extend space-time block coding techniques, originally proposed for point-to-point communication links, to point-to-multipoint communication links, thereby taking into account the multiple access technique in the design of the transmission scheme. In specific, we propose two per-tone linear space-time chip equalizers for a space-time coded MC-DS-CDMA down-link with linear precoding. Both the training-based and the semi-blind chip equalizer exploit the presence of a continuous code-multiplexed pilot in the transmitted signal but differ in the amount of a-priori information they assume to estimate their coefficients. With M-t transmit antennas at the base-station, M-r receive antennas at the mobile station and L the order of the multipath channel, they come close to extracting the full diversity of order M-t (.) M-r (.) (L + 1) in reduced as well as full load settings.

This paper studies the design and analysis of large multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with linear precoding and Krylov subspace receivers. We design precoders that can improve performance with low-rank receivers. We then introduce a tool based on potential theory to analyze the convergence behavior of the mean-squared error (MSE). The effectiveness of the proposed precoder and the superexponential convergence of the MSE are demonstrated(1).

In this paper, we consider the broadcast channel with confidential messages and eavesdroppers (BCCE), where a multi-antenna base station simultaneously communicates to multiple potentially malicious users, in the presence of external eavesdroppers randomly located according to a Poisson point process (PPP). By using techniques from stochastic geometry and random matrix theory, we obtain explicit expressions for the secrecy outage probability and mean secrecy rate achievable with regularized channel inversion precoding. We show that both these metrics scale as lambda(e)/root N, where N is the number of transmit antennas and lambda(e) is the density of external eavesdroppers.
