One of the important seaside operations problems that received a lot of attention in the literature is the assignment of quay space and service time to vessels that have to be unloaded and loaded at a terminal This problem is commonly referred to as the Berth Allocation Problem (BAP). Different approaches exist in the literature for the berth allocation problem (BAP). Some of those approaches consider static anival of vessels, so called the static berth allocation problem (SBAP) while other approaches consider dynamic antival of vessels, called the dynainic berth allocation problem (DBAP). Approaches also differ in the layout used for the quay. In this paper we study one of the SF3AP models presented in literature. Since the SBAP is a non-deterministic polynomial-tiine INP) problem, we applied a Pagrangian Relaxation heuristic technique with the application of cutting plane method on our problem. We coded the cubing plane method in Mafia's, and ran it on different instances of the problem. In most of the cases that We studied, our solution technique converged to an optimal solution.

An efficiently computable subgraph pattern support measure: counting independent observations

Graph support measures are functions measuring how frequently a given subgraph pattern occurs in a given database graph. An important class of support measures relies on overlap graphs. A major advantage of overlap-graph based approaches is that they combine anti-monotonicity with counting the occurrences of a subgraph pattern which are independent according to certain criteria. However, existing overlap-graph based support measures are expensive to compute. In this paper, we propose a new support measure which is based on a new notion of independence. We show that our measure is the solution to a sparse linear program, which can be computed efficiently using interior point methods. We study the anti-monotonicity and other properties of this new measure, and relate it to the statistical power of a sample of embeddings in a network. We show experimentally that, in contrast to earlier overlap-graph based proposals, our support measure makes it feasible to mine subgraph patterns in large networks.

Traditionally, automatic design rule correction (DRC) problem is modeled as a linear program (LP) with design rules as difference constraints under minimum perturbation objective. This yields Totally Uni-Modular (TUM) constraint matrices thereby guaranteeing integral grid-compliant solutions with LP solvers. However, advanced technology nodes introduce per-layer grids or discrete tracks that result into non-TUM constraint matrices for the DRC problem. Consequently, LP solvers do not guarantee integral solutions. In this work, we propose a novel formulation using an 'unrolling' technique. Our formulation guarantees TUM constraint matrices and hence integral multiple grid/track compliant solutions. We demonstrate its efficacy on layouts at advanced nodes.

This paper proposes economic and environmental optimal operations of combined heat and power (CHP) systems for a building energy management system (BEMS). BEMS consists of a CHP system, an auxiliary boiler, an absorption chiller, and power grids. The problem concerns with multi-objective cost functions, including total operating cost, the minimum total carbon dioxide (CO2) emission, and optimal energy flows. Then, we show that it can be formulated as a linear program which can be efficiently solved. In a case study, load profiles are taken from a large shopping mall building. Moreover, the simulation is extended to determine the impact of natural gas prices onto the total operating cost. The numerical results demonstrate that economic and environmental optimal operations for BEMS can reduce total energy cost of the building but slightly increase CO2 emissions. Moreover, the fluctuation in fuel prices may cause risks in the investment of such a BEMS.

We propose a novel and an efficient method for reconstructing the 3D arrangement of lines extracted from a single image, using vanishing points, orthogonal structure, and an optimization procedure that considers all plausible connectivity constraints between lines. Line detection identifies a large number of salient lines that intersect or nearly intersect in an image, but relatively a few of these apparent junctions correspond to real intersections in the 3D scene. We use linear programming (LP) to identify a minimal set of least-violated connectivity constraints that are sufficient to unambiguously reconstruct the 3D lines. In contrast to prior solutions that primarily focused on well-behaved synthetic line drawings with severely restricting assumptions, we develop an algorithm that can work on real images. The algorithm produces line reconstruction by identifying 95% correct connectivity constraints in York Urban database, with a total computation time of 1 second per image.

The permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) is widely used in hybrid electric vehicles. The current control is a difficult challenge because is characterized by fast dynamics that are subject to physical and control constraints. As such, this paper presents a novel current control strategy of a PMSM system. It uses a one step ahead model predictive control scheme based on flexible Lyapunov functions concept. Firstly, the quadratic constraints related to the system states and control inputs are approximated with polytopic constraints. Then, the current control problem is reduced to a linear program, which can be solved on-line. To illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme a numerical example is provided and the obtained results show good performance while the physical constraints are satisfied all the time.

We study dynamic planning decisions of a logistics service provider that in charge of the integrated supply chain (SC) planning. We examine an SC with multiple products, suppliers, transit nodes, and customers. The logistics service provider is responsible for aggregate distribution planning and operative dynamic transportation planning. It is to decide on aggregate distribution flows as well as on the time-dependent intensities (i.e., transportation order quantities). These decisions are tightly incorporated but previous research considered them mostly isolated. This is quite naturally since these problems contain data of different detail degree which can be hardly incorporated in only one model. To resolve this problem, we present a hybrid multi-period distribution–transportation model as an optimal control problem blended with linear programming. This contribution has some particular features. First, it extends previous research by elaborating on the dynamic optimal control model. Second, it considers multi-period problem statement with multiple products and alternative transportation channels. Third, we represent the integrated SC planning in terms of structure dynamics control theory in order to take into account execution stage and adaptation. With the results of this study, the dynamic issues in integrated logistics planning in the SC can be addressed, and an intelligent solution to the important problem of SC management has been proposed. An explicit bound on the transportation cost distance

We give what appears to be the first explicit, easily computable bound on the transportation cost distance with respect to the weighted Hamming metric. The bound follows from Kantorovich duality and a novel inequality, which amounts to bounding the maximal value of certain linear programs and may be of independent interest. We give two application to concentration of measure for dependent processes and pose some open problems and directions for future work.

A refined deterministic linear program for the network revenue management problem with customer choice behavior

We present a new deterministic linear program for the network revenue management problem with customer choice behavior. The novel aspect of our linear program is that it naturally generates bid prices that depend on how much time is left until the time of departure. Similar to the earlier linear program used by van Ryzin and Liu (2004), the optimal objective value of our linear program provides an upper bound on the optimal total expected revenue over the planning horizon. In addition, the percent gap between the optimal objective value of our linear program and the optimal total expected revenue diminishes in an asymptotic regime where the leg capacities and the number of time periods in the planning horizon increase linearly with the same rate. Computational experiments indicate that when compared with the linear program that appears in the existing literature, our linear program can provide tighter upper bounds, and the control policies that are based on our linear program can obtain higher total expected revenues.
