Extract: High-summer/low-winter patterns of milk production and shipments give rise to capacity utilization problems and attendant additional costs in the transportation, processing and distribution sectors of the dairy industry. While it is technically possible to modify the natural seasonal pattern, it may not be economically optimal to do so. This may in part explain the highly seasonal pattern of industrial milk shipments in Canada, and may suggest the need for policy incentives to induce any adjustment. linear programming models were used to analyze a small sample of highly seasonal dairy farms in Ontario. It was found that uniform shipment patterns would reduce farm profits only marginally.

Modeling demand management strategies for evacuations

Evacuations are massive operations that create heavy travel demand on road networks some of which are experiencing major congestions even with regular traffic demand. Congestion in traffic networks during evacuations, can be eased either by supply or demand management actions. This study focuses on modeling demand management strategies of optimal departure time, optimal destination choice and optimal zone evacuation scheduling (also known as staggered evacuation) under a given fixed evacuation time assumption. The analytical models are developed for a system optimal dynamic traffic assignment problem, so that their characteristics can be studied to produce insights to be used for large-scale solution algorithms. While the first two strategies were represented in a linear programming (LP) model, evacuation zone scheduling problem inevitable included integers and resulted in a mixed integer LP (MILP) one. The dual of the LP produced an optimal assignment principle, and the nature of the MILP formulations revealed clues about more efficient heuristics. The discussed properties of the models are also supported via numerical results from a hypothetical network example.

A hesitant fuzzy multiple attribute decision making method based on linear programming and TOPSIS

Hesitant fuzzy set (HFS) provides an effective tool in dealing with decision making situation when only some values of a membership are possible for an alternative on certain attribute. In this paper, we propose a method based on linear programming and TOPSIS to solve the multiple attribute decision making (MADM) problem with partially known attribute weight information under hesitant fuzzy environment. To begin with, we present a linear programming model for assessing objective attribute weights from the decision making matrix and partially known attribute weight information. Moreover, we utilize the weighted correlation coefficient values between every alternative and the positive ideal point to rank all the alternatives based on TOPSIS. Furthermore, a numerical example is utilized to validate the MADM method proposed in this paper. © 2015

Using tools for modelling and solving agricultural problems under risk

We present an opportunity to use a combination of computer based tools for generating risk functions, simulation, classical decision rules and linear programming (LP) as tools for decision making. This new approach is demonstrated by the use of an example which addresses the optimal assemblage of a pig fattening enterprise, whereby some basic data (e.g. prices, labour costs and average daily weight increases) are risk functions. Some coefficients, especially in the objective function (maximum gross margin) are stochastic values calculated with those 'risky' basic data. Various scenarios for different cases of risk behaviour are formulated and solved using decision rules. The optimal LP results are interpreted in deterministic and stochastic ways. Wind Turbine Interference in a Wind Farm Layout Optimization Mixed Integer linear programming Model

This work develops a wind intensity interference coefficient which captures the interference caused by an upwind turbine on a downwind turbine in the same wind flow. This coefficient includes the use of a Weibull distribution to handle variability in the wind velocity, and also accounts for the geometric relationship between the turbines and the boundaries of the wind sector. This interference coefficient then forms part of a mixed integer linear program (MILP) which is used to optimise the locations of wind turbines within a wind farm site. The MILP approach is an exact method that can guarantee that the turbine locations determined by the model are optimal with respect to an a priori chosen set of possible turbine locations. Tests on an example data set (based on a demonstration case in the WindFarmer software) show, for the particular wind resource used, that interference results in a loss of power of approximately 4.2% when compared to the power production which would be predicted without accounting for interference.

SHADOW PRICES AS MEMBER RETURNS FOR MARKETING COOPERATIVE

Many marketing cooperatives handle several types or grades of member-supplied products. These cooperatives have to determine the returns to be alloted to each product. Helmberger, Hoos, and Nicholls have solved this problem for a cooperative with a single homogeneous product. However, their models do not extend readily to the multiple product case. This article describes how returns can he simultaneously calculated for each member-supplied product handled by a multiple product marketing cooperative. A linear programming model is first introduced to compute the returns under a set of rather restrictive assumptions. When these assumptions are relaxed, another method of deriving the values is required. Such a method--called the pooling constraint method is presented in the latter part of the article. FARM-LEVEL ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF CONSERVATION AGRICULTURE IN ECUADOR

Farm households in the Andean region of South America face serious livelihood challenges, including a poor natural resource base and declining agricultural yields. Conservation agriculture has been identified as a potential solution to environmental degradation and the associated poverty and food insecurity in the region. This study analyses the potential economic impact of conservation agriculture in two sub-watersheds in central Ecuador utilizing a linear programming model and data from experiments in farmer fields. The model found that specific cover crops, crop rotations and reduced tillage designed to reduce soil erosion and increase soil organic matter can lead to increased incomes for farm households in a time period of as short as two years. It appears that conservation agriculture practices have the potential to improve the livelihoods of the rural poor in Ecuador because conservation agriculture activities entered the revenue-maximizing model solution for both sub-watersheds.
