Single Remote-Sensing Image Dehazing in HSI Color Space

In order to improve the visibility of a single hazy remote sensing multi-spectral image, we develop a novel and effective dehazing algorithm in HSI (hue, saturation and intensity) color space. First of all, the hazy image is transformed into HSI color space;then a linear regression model is built for saturation component image processing. In addition, we implement the improved dark channel prior method in the intensity channel processing. Compared with the traditional haze removal methods in remote-sensing images, the experimental results demonstrate that the developed algorithm can achieve better visual effect and better color fidelity. Both qualitative evaluations and quantitative assessments indicate that the proposed method achieves a better performance than the state-of-the-art methods.

Paradoxes in understanding the Efficiency Factors of Space Heating

Efficiency factors are here defined as the thermal energy performance indicators of the space heating. Until recently, the efficiency factors were assumed as one value for space heating located in any climate. This study addresses the problem of how the outdoor climate affects the efficiency factors of a space heating equipped with 1D model of hydronic floor heating. The findings show how the efficiency factors, computed with two numerical methods, are correlated with the solar radiation. This study highlights the paradoxes in understanding the results of efficiency factors analysis. This work suggests how to interpret and use the efficiency factors as a benchmark performance indicator.

Development of QSAAR and QAAR models for predicting fish early-life stage toxicity with a focus on industrial chemicals

We developed models for predicting fish early-life stage (ELS) toxicities oriented to industrial chemicals. The training set was constructed without data from the Office of Pesticide Programs Pesticide Ecotoxicity Database, the main source for the pesticide-biased training set used in our previous work (SAR QSAR Environ. Res. 29:9, 725?742). In addition to the descriptors from the previous study, we also used water solubility to develop the new models, which were evaluated against the test set used in our previous study so that we could focus on the effects of the different training set and the additional descriptor. The statistics for the new models were hardly better than those for the previous models, which suggests, contrary to our expectations, that pesticide-biased data can successfully be used to develop models for predicting the fish ELS toxicities oriented to industrial chemicals. Acute Daphnia magna toxicity was important for the predictive QSAARs in both studies. A distance-based method for defining the applicability domains indicated that water solubility was a key indicator for detecting underestimated chemicals. The comparison of fish ELS toxicities for chemicals presented in different literatures revealed the uncertainty of the experimental data, which may lead to the low predictivity.

The influence of biochar particle size and concentration on bulk density and maximum water holding capacity of sandy vs sandy loam soil in a column experiment

Biochar application to agricultural soils has been proposed as a way to increase crop production by improving soil chemical and physical properties. Liming potential and improved nutrient exchange on biochar surfaces are the most reported mechanisms. Wherever crops experience drought stress, improvements in soil water holding capacity (WHC) might also be an important mechanism. However, reported effects on soil structure and WHC are mixed. Therefore, we studied the effects of biochar on soil bulk density (BD) and WHC in a laboratory column study using two agricultural soils from Portugal: a sandy and a sandy loam soil. Mixed woody feedstock was pyrolysed at 620 degrees C, creating a wettable biochar that was used unsorted as well as sieved into large (2-4 mm) and small (0.05-1.00 mm) particles, mixed into the soils at 1, 5, 10 and 20% (by volume), and incubated for 10 days at field capacity to allow aggregation. Soil samples were analysed for BD and WHC using soil columns. We found biochar to decrease soil BD and increase maximum WHC, expressed as gravity-drained equilibrium water content, for both soils. The sandy soil was more responsive with significant effects at the lowest application rate (1%), while the sandy loam soil started to show significant effects at 5% biochar. Small biochar particles reduced the BD of sandy soil more, while large biochar particles caused a greater reduction in the BD of the sandy loam soil. The effect of biochar particle size on WHC was less clear, except for small particles at 20% volumetric concentration, which showed a 60% increase in gravimetric WHC.'When expressed as total soil water storage (SWS), 20% biochar incorporation to 15 cm depth would increase the total SWS of sandy soil from 0.56 mm (control) to 0.83-0.91 (mm), and of the sandy loam soil from 0.56 to 0.79-0.96 (mm), depending on biochar particle size. A linear model Based on Principal Component Analysis for Disease Prediction

Various classification methods are applied to predict different diseases, such as diabetes, tuberculosis, and so on, in medical field. Diagnosis of diabetes can be analyzed by checking the level of blood sugar of patient with the normal known levels, blood pressure, BMI, skin thickness, and so on. Several classification methods have been implemented on diabetes. In this paper, the main aim is to build a statistical model for diabetes data to get better classification accuracy. Extracted features of diabetes data are projected to a new space using principal component analysis, then, it is modeled by applying linear regression method on these newly formed attributes. The accuracy obtained by this method is 82.1% for predicting diabetes which has reformed over other existing classification methods.

The Factors Affecting the Performance of Marine Environmental Protection Enterprises

With the rapid development of coastal economy and marine development activities, marine environmental protection issues have become increasingly prominent, leading to the development of marine environmental protection enterprises which have gradually become a hot spot of concern. However, as China's marine environmental protection enterprises are mostly still at the stage of start-up and growth, it is urgent to maximize the value creation of marine environmental protection enterprises and optimize the value through the market value management. This paper selects 46 listed environmental protection companies as research samples, studies the management performance of them through factor analysis and multiple regression, and tests the relationship between various influencing factors and market value management performance. The study found that such factors as operational capacity, innovation capability, stockholder's rights drive, investor structure professionalism, and the number of disclosed mergers and acquisitions have a significant positive impact on market value management performance of marine environmental protection enterprises, while factors like capital structure, the number of litigations and arbitrations have a significant negative impact on market value management performance, and there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between ownership concentration and market value management performance. This research has certain enlightenment significance for marine environmental protection enterprises to improve the performance of market value management.

Robust regression: Testing global hypotheses about the slopes when there is multicollinearity or heteroscedasticity

A well-known concern regarding the usual linear regression model is multicollinearity. As the strength of the association among the independent variables increases, the squared standard error of regression estimators tends to increase, which can seriously impact power. This paper examines heteroscedastic methods for dealing with this issue when testing the hypothesis that all of the slope parameters are equal to zero via a robust ridge estimator that guards against outliers among the dependent variable. Included are results related to leverage points, meaning outliers among the independent variables. In various situations, the proposed method increases power substantially.

Ratio-based design hour determination for airport passenger terminal facilities

To avoid both over-design and under-sizing of airport passenger terminal facilities such as security checkpoints, the infrastructure is designed for a specifically determined design load. As such, the design load is considered for a short period of time, usually an hour of operation, during which peak, though not necessarily maximum, demand occurs. For strategic planning applications, future design loads can be determined by either fictitious flight schedules or ratio-based models which forecast the relationship between design load and annual demand. This study presents two ratio-based methods which allow the direct determination of design hour loads (DHL) for passenger terminal facilities. The unsaturated DHL model considers the relationship between observed passenger flows in the terminal and aggregated annual demand data. The saturated DHL model includes several operational constraints which limit the actual DHL, such as limitations in the runway system or the fleet mix operating at an airport. Both models are applied to two real-world airports, for which the DHL of the security checkpoint facilities is estimated from large datasets covering multiple years. Results are significant at the 5 % level and suggest that the proposed ratio-based methods are appropriate for airport strategic planning applications.

Environmental concerns and the depletion of fossil resources are the major factors that boost modern society towards bio-based and circular economy. To this end, the development of mathematical tools that can be used to perform rapid comparative analysis across multiple technology options is necessary. The aim of this work is to present a simple and accurate mathematical model, which describes the economics of the bioreaction section of a typical biotransformation technology. The functional dependency of fixed capital investment (FCI) and utilities consumption from parameters determined experimentally is developed using a regression model. The proposed model, which consists only of three equations, can be used to compare the economic performance of different bio-based technologies that could potentially reach commercialization. More specifically, it can be used to estimate, at the early stages of process development, the effect of final broth concentration (titer), fermentation time and aeration rate on overall process economics.

Establishing growth charts for proposed body shape and size index of the Pakistani population, using quantile regression approach

Background: Obesity leads to other fatal diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, depression, and some forms of cancer. Still, the well-known tool to measure obesity is the body mass index. But it usually failed in the measurement of adipose tissues. So, we present a novel anthropometric measure, called body shape and size index which is developed by the combination of major anthropometric determinants: body surface area, body mass index, weight, and height. Methods: This study is based on cross-sectional data consisting of 7224 individuals that were taken from the city Multan, Punjab, Pakistan. All the individuals, both males, and females, of age 2 years and above were included in the study except the pregnant women. The variables included in this study are gender, area (urban and rural), age (years), weight (kg), and height (meters). Growth charts of quantile regression are used for the inferential analysis of data. Comparison of proposed body shape and size index at different obesity levels has also been made to access the relationship of proposed body shape and size index with obesity. Results: The results show that the proposed body shape and size index has a great association with body surface area, body mass index, weight, height, and age. The proposed body shape and size index has a high negative association with body surface area, moderate negative association with body mass index and weight, and low negative association with height and age. According to growth charts of body shape and size index, after the age of 25 years, body shape and size index curves go upward while it smoothly goes downward at the age of 50 years but decreases in earlier ages. Body shape and size index showed a significant association with body shape and body size (body development) at the same time. Conclusion: Body shape and size index is found, generally linear with age, and increased with decreasing body mass index and body surface area. The proposed index has an indirect
