Although there is now a considerable volume of high-strain (<105cycles) fatigue data for uniaxial tension-compression and simple-bending conditions, relatively little information is available regarding the effects of stress and strain biaxiality. A method which has been used to study the effects of biaxiality on longlife fatigue strength is to subject thin-walled tubes to repeated internal pressure and an end load which is in phase with, and a linear function of, the pressure. The object of the present research was to use this method to study the influence of stress biaxiality on the high-strain fatigue behavior of a high strength, aluminum-4% copper alloy at room temperature. From a continuum-mechanics point of view, this material is completely elastic after the first few load cycles. Cylinder results for hoop to axial stress ratios of 2:1, 1:1, 1:2 and 2: −1 suggest that fatigue failure of this material in the life range 103to 105cycles is primarily dependent on the maximum range of tensile stress. This conclusion and a study of fracture surfaces led to the use of linear-elastic fracture mechanics to interpret the fatigue and brittle fracture behavior of these cylinder

We consider the problem of choosing a Boolean such that for any linear function there are input tuples which uniquely determine it among all linear functions. It is shown that the smallest possible number of input tuples in the domain of definition grows linearly with the number of variables. Previous work has shown that cross-over trial data can be analysed using within-subject linear functions. Scores that result from linear functions are graphed in quantile comparison plots in order to visualize the differences between factor levels. An example suggests how this visualization can be used to identify outliers or to provide a more specific interpretation of results. Additional examples indicate how this approach can be used to track carry-over differences or interaction effects. This paper compares sections on functions and linear functions from two Korean textbooks and an American standards-based textbook (University of Chicago School Mathematics Project [UCSMP] Algebra) to understand differences and similarities among these textbooks through horizontal and vertical analyses. We found that these textbooks provide different opportunities to learn (OTL). UCSMP Algebra places strong emphasis on real-life applications of linear functions rather than on pure mathematics and mathematical algorithms. Also, compared to Korean textbooks, UCSMP Algebra offers more OTL for students to solve, explain, and reason about higher level cognitively demanding mathematics problems than Korean secondary textbooks. Contradictory results, compared to previous studies about East Asian mathematics textbooks indicate the need for further study to compare secondary textbooks from more East Asian countries. Also, with the results of this study, we need to understand the results of international assessments more carefully.
