Penalty function-based precoding for downlink multiuser MIMO systems

In this paper, a novel linear precoding scheme is proposed for downlink multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The new algorithm uses the penalty function method to mitigate the co-channel interference and is formulated as a convex problem with general linear constraints. The constraints can be sum power, per-antenna power or per-antenna-group power constraints, hence the new algorithm is general and can be used in both single-cell and fully cooperative multi-cell scenarios. Moreover, the famous block diagonalization (BD) precoding can be considered as a special case of our method when a very large penalty factor is used. We study the optimal solution of this convex problem and propose an iterative algorithm to obtain the optimum based on the Lagrange dual method. Simulation results show that the proposed method significantly outperforms the BD method at low and moderate SNR values in terms of the weighted sum rate. (C) 2012 Elsevier GmbH. Spatial Reuse precoding for Scalable Downlink Networks

In this paper, we develop linear precoding schemes for MIMO downlink networks with quasi-static channels that are scalable, in the sense that they can be implemented with moderate complexity in networks with increasing numbers of cells and users. The principle that underlies the proposed precoding scheme is to exploit the decomposable structure of the equivalent channel matrix by designing the precoders at the base stations to be decomposable as well. Thus, the channel matrices and the designed precoders can be expressed as the Kronecker product of constituent matrices. For networks with a finite number of cells, the proposed structured precoding schemes enable inter-cell interference cancellation without the need for inter-cell feedback and provide more degrees of freedom than conventional interference avoidance schemes, while incurring a latency that grows only linearly in the number of cells. The proposed structured precoding schemes also enable a scaling approach for unbounded networks that we have called "spatial reuse precoding" (SRP). SRP is based on the observation that at each receiver, the signals from interfering sources that employ the same precoder arrive in the same subspace, regardless of the particular channel matrices between the interfering sources and the receiver. In some typical cellular architectures we show how an SRP scheme based on the proposed structured precoders can be designed to eliminate the dominant sources of interference without requiring cooperation between cells. In addition, we show that SRP can provide substantial performance gains in certain heterogeneous networks.

In this paper, we consider massive multiple input multiple output systems that employ linear precoding techniques and are impaired by transmitter-side nonlinearities and channel estimation errors. We present an analytical method for the statistical characterization of the transmitted signals and develop a general framework to obtain analytically, the performance of different precoding techniques under the assumption of imperfect channel state information and for different types of nonlinearities. Regardless of the particular nonlinear transmission scenario, it is shown that the performance penalty associated to the nonlinear distortion can be tolerable if the number of transmit antennas is greater than the number of independent data streams.

Generalized spatial modulation (GSM) activates n(t) out of N-t (1 <= n(t) < N-t) available transmit antennas, and information is conveyed through nt modulated symbols as well as the index of the n(t) activated antennas. GSM strikes an attractive tradeoff between spectrum efficiency and energy efficiency. linear precoding that exploits channel state information at the transmitter enhances the system error performance. For GSM with n(t) = 1 (the traditional SM), the existing precoding methods suffer from high computational complexity. On the other hand, GSM precoding for n(t) >= 2 is not thoroughly investigated in the open literature. In this paper, we develop a unified precoding design for GSM systems, which universally works for all n(t) values. Based on the maximum minimum Euclidean distance criterion, we find that the precoding design can be formulated as a large-scale nonconvex quadratically constrained quadratic program problem. Then, we transform this challenging problem into a sequence of unconstrained subproblems by leveraging augmented Lagrangian and dual ascent techniques. These subproblems can be solved in an iterative manner efficiently. Numerical results show that the proposed method can substantially improve the system error performance relative to the GSM without precoding and features extremely fast convergence rate with a very low computational complexity.

Recently, a structure of an optimal linear precoder for multi cell downlink systems has been described, and many other references have used simplified versions of this precoder to obtain promising performance gains. These gains have been hypothesized to stem from the additional degrees of freedom that allow for interference mitigation through interference relegation to orthogonal subspaces. However, no conclusive or rigorous understanding has yet been developed. In this paper, we build on an intuitive interference induction trade-off and the aforementioned preceding structure to propose an interference aware RZF (iaRZF) preceding scheme for multi cell downlink systems, and we analyze its rate performance. Special emphasis is placed on the induced interference mitigation mechanism of iaRZF. For example, we will verify the intuitive expectation that the precoder structure can either completely remove induced inter-cell or intra-cell interference. We state new results from large-scale random matrix theory that make it possible to give more intuitive and insightful explanations of the precoder behavior, also for cases involving imperfect channel state information (CSI). We remark especially that the interference-aware precoder makes use of all available information about interfering channels to improve performance. Even very poor CSI allows for significant sum-rate gains. Our obtained insights are then used to propose heuristic precoder parameters for arbitrary systems, whose effectiveness are shown in more involved system scenarios. Furthermore, calculation and implementation of these parameters does not require explicit inter base station cooperation.

Distributed Multicell-MISO precoding Using the Layered Virtual SINR Framework

In this letter, we address the problem of distributed multi-antenna cooperative transmission in a cellular system. Most research in this area has so far assumed that base stations not only have the data dedicated to all the users but also share the full channel state information (CSI). In what follows, we assume that each base station (BS) only has local CSI knowledge. We propose a suboptimal, yet efficient, way in which the multicell MISO precoders may be designed at each BS in a distributed manner, as a superposition of so-called virtual SINR maximizations: a virtual SINR maximizing transmission scheme yields Pareto optimal rates for the MISO Interference Channel (IC);its extension to the multicell MISO channel is shown to provide a distributed precoding scheme achieving a certain fairness optimality for the two link case. We illustrate the performance of our algorithm through Monte Carlo simulations.

We study the transmission techniques in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). We focus on the issue of utilizing the available CSIT by a single forward error control (FEC) code. We first analyze the system performance for the ideal coding case. We then develop a simple but efficient scheme for the practical coding case, which is based on joint FEC coding and linear precoding at the transmitter and iterative linear minimum-mean-square-error (LMMSE) detection at the receiver. Numerical results show that significant performances gains can be achieved by the proposed scheme.

Optimization of Integer-Forcing precoding for Multi-User MIMO Downlink

Integer-forcing (IF) precoding is an alternative to linear precoding for multi-user (MU) multiple-input-multipleoutput (MIMO) channels, with the potential to offer superior performance at a similar complexity. In this letter, a lowcomplexity suboptimal method is proposed to optimize the parameters of an IF scheme for any number of K users. The proposed method involves solving a relaxation of the problem followed by the application of a lattice reduction algorithm and is shown to have an overall complexity of O(K-3). Simulation results show that the proposed method achieves a higher sum rate than a heuristic choice of parameters and significantly outperforms conventional linear precoding in all simulated scenarios.

SVD-Based precoding for Single Carrier MIMO Transmission With Frequency Domain MMSE Turbo Equalization

This letter proposes an SVD-based precoding technique for single carrier transmission over frequency selective MIMO channels with frequency domain (FD) minimum-mean-squared-error (MMSE) turbo equalization. We consider the problem of optimizing the transmit power allocation over the FD channel eigenmodes subject to maintaining a target bit error rate of the turbo equalizer, and show that this problem can be efficiently solved by convex programming techniques. Results of the simulations conducted to demonstrate the superiority of the turbo equalizer with the proposed precoding technique, and to verify the accuracy of the analysis are presented in this letter.
