This paper focuses on linear precoding designs in multi-user multiple-input multiple-output block diagonalization (BD) relay systems with limited feedback. A base station employs spatial multiplexing transmission based on quantized channel state information (CSI) obtained from a relay. Then the relay transmits the received signal to users equipped with multiple antennas. In this paper, we propose a BD precoding scheme based on minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion, which results in a closed-form solution. We show that the proposed scheme is robust to both noise and channel uncertainties caused by quantization errors. Also, we extend the proposed scheme to the case with CSI feedback delays. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of our proposed schemes.

In this paper, we study the achievable throughput for regularized block diagonalization (RBD) precoding in multi-user MIMO broadcast channels at high SNRs. By applying an analytical framework for a high SNR affine approximation to capacity, we derive the multiplexing gains and the power offsets for RBD in two cases separately. In the first case, we assume that the aggregate number of receive antennas is less than or equal to the number of transmit antennas. It is found that RBD can maintain the same multiplexing gain as dirty paper coding (DPC) and block diagonalization (BD) precoding at high SNRs and has a smaller power offset than BD. The sum rate differences relative to DPC and BD are analyzed and bounded as simple functions of the system parameters. In the second case, we assume that the aggregate number of receive antennas is larger than the number of transmit antennas. Although RBD can still be performed, the achievable throughput is degraded with an increasing number of receive antennas. The benefit of spatial multiplexing is completely lost due to a unit spatial multiplexing gain at high SNRs.

The path and antenna correlations significantly degrade the system capacity in spatially-multiplexed multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems and increase bit error rate (BER) in orthogonal space-time block coded (OSTBC) OFDM. We develop adaptive dual-mode precoding to improve system performance with transmit antenna and path correlations. Both linear and non-linear Tomlinson-Harashima (TH) precoders are considered. In our proposed approach, precoding for maximizing capacity in spatially-multiplexed OFDM or precoding for minimizing error rate in OSTBC OFDM, is adaptively chosen at the receiver, and only one-bit decision information per subcarrier needs to be sent back to the transmitter. The precoding mode selection depends on the channel conditions. To determine the precoding matrix only the statistical knowledge of the channel is needed at the transmitter, which significantly reduces the feedback requirements. In spatially correlated channels, proposed adaptive dual-mode precoding individually outperforms either capacity-maximization precoding in spatially-multiplexed OFDM or error-rate-minimization precoding in OSTBC OFDM.

This work studies the design of linear precoders for cooperative multi-cell MIMO downlink systems with finite alphabet inputs. Traditionally, multi-cell MIMO downlink precoder designs rely on Gaussian input assumption, which may lead to performance loss when the true inputs admit discrete non-Gaussian symbols. In this work, we present optimized precoders by maximizing weighted sum rate (of finite-alphabet-input) under a set of single basestation power constraints. Specifically, we propose a simple gradient algorithm for general multi-cell MIMO downlink channel and a block diagonalization gradient algorithm while supporting interference cancellation.

An Efficient Modified Gauss Seidel Precoder for Downlink Massive MIMO Systems

Recently, as the demand for tremendous spectral efficiency has increased, the massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system has attracted attention in the wireless communication system. In massive MIMO, the zero forcing (ZF) precoder provides optimal performance. However, the complexity for process of matrix inversion is burden in terms of practical implementation. Therefore, many researches for approximate inversion of channel matrix have been performed in order to reduce the complexity. The typical linear precoder based on approximate matrix inversion is the Gauss Seidel (GS) precoder. The GS precoder provides the similar precoded signals to ZF precoder with low complexity. However, the GS precoder does not adopt parallel implementation because of inner structure. Consequently, precoder for the GS iterative method spends a lot of times in order to estimate precoded signal. Therefore, this problem makes the GS precoder impractical. In this article, the punctured GS (PGS) is proposed in order to mitigate the problem of parallel operation by modifying inner structure for the GS precoder. However, the performance for the PGS precoder is degraded due to modified inner structure. Therefore, the ordering PGS precoder which performance degradation due to modified inner structure is mitigated is additionally introduced. As a result, although the delay when precoded signal for the PGS precoder is obtained decreases than the GS precoder, the BER performance for the PGS precoder is degraded than the GS precoder. In contrast, the ordering PGS precoder provides improved BER performance with decrease of delay compared with the GS precoder.

Outage Probability of Dual-Hop Multiple Antenna AF Systems with linear Processing in the Presence of Co-Channel Interference

This paper considers a dual-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying system where the relay is equipped with multiple antennas, while the source and the destination are equipped with a single antenna. Assuming that the relay is subjected to co-channel interference (CCI) and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) while the destination is corrupted by AWGN only, we propose three heuristic relay precoding schemes to combat the CCI, namely, 1) Maximum ratio combining/maximal ratio transmission (MRC/MRT), 2) Zero-forcing/ MRT (ZF/MRT), 3) Minimum mean-square error/MRT (MMSE/MRT). We derive new exact outage expressions as well as simple high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) outage approximations for all three schemes. Our findings suggest that both the MRC/MRT and the MMSE/MRT schemes achieve a full diversity of N, while the ZF/MRT scheme achieves a diversity order of N -M, where N is the number of relay antennas and M is the number of interferers. In addition, we show that the MMSE/MRT scheme always achieves the best outage performance, and the ZF/MRT scheme outperforms the MRC/MRT scheme in the low SNR regime, while becomes inferior to the MRC/MRT scheme in the high SNR regime. Finally, in the large N regime, we show that both the ZF/MRT and MMSE/MRT schemes are capable of completely eliminating the CCI, while perfect interference cancelation is not possible with the MRC/MRT scheme.

A closed-loop multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transceiver combining space-time multilayer precoding and transmit selection is proposed. The transmitter design consists in optimizing the number of space-time transmit layers as well as the partitioning of the transmit antennas into the selected number of space-time layers. We show that this problem can be translated into jointly selecting, from a finite alphabet, two transmit matrices that define, respectively, the multilayer space-time code and the antenna mapping to be used. The parametrization of the proposed design takes into account all possible space-time layering schemes in between spatial multiplexing and transmit diversity for a fixed number of transmit antennas and linear precoder structure. Sufficient conditions for solution existence using a linear space-time zero forcing receiver are discussed. Simulation results compare the proposed transceiver with some MIMO schemes and corroborate the benefits of closed-loop multilayer selection in terms of capacity and bit error rates. Optimized Data Sharing in Multicell MIMO With Finite Backhaul Capacity

This paper addresses cooperation in a multicell environment where base stations (BSs) wish to jointly serve multiple users, under a constrained-capacity backhaul. We point out that for finite backhaul capacity a tradeoff between sharing user data, which allows for full MIMO cooperation, and not doing so, which reduces the setup to an interference channel but also requires less overhead, emerges. We optimize this tradeoff by formulating a rate splitting approach in which non-shared data (private to each transmitter) and shared data are superimposed. We derive the corresponding achievable rate region and obtain the optimal beamforming design for both shared and private symbols. We illustrate how the capacity of the backhaul determines how much of the user data is worth sharing across multiple BSs.

Physical Layer Security in Downlink Multi-Antenna Cellular Networks

In this paper, we study physical layer security for the downlink of cellular networks, where the confidential messages transmitted to each mobile user can be eavesdropped by both;1) the other users in the same cell and 2) the users in the other cells. The locations of base stations and mobile users are modeled as two independent two-dimensional Poisson point processes. Using the proposed model, we analyze the secrecy rates achievable by regularized channel inversion (RCI) precoding by performing a large-system analysis that combines tools from stochastic geometry and random matrix theory. We obtain approximations for the probability of secrecy outage and the mean secrecy rate, and characterize regimes where RCI precoding achieves a non-zero secrecy rate. We find that unlike isolated cells, if one treats interference as noise, the secrecy rate in a cellular network does not grow monotonically with the transmit power, and the network tends to be in secrecy outage if the transmit power grows unbounded. Furthermore, we show that there is an optimal value for the base station deployment density that maximizes the secrecy rate, and this value is a decreasing function of the transmit power.

Wavelet OFDM with Overlap FDE for non-Gaussian channels in precoded NOMA based systems

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is considered as a prominent multiple access technique for fifth generation (5G) systems mainly because of its high spectral efficiency (SE). NOMA based system employs superposition coding (SC) and successive interference cancellation (SIC) at the transmitter and receiver side respectively. Classical multi-carrier NOMA adopts orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) as a multi-carrier modulation (MCM) technique;however, high peak to average power ratio (PAPR) and cyclic prefix (CP) inclusion makes OFDM an inadequate choice for NOMA. To improve SE of the OFDM-NOMA, wavelet transform (WT) has been proposed for NOMA. This article proposes new physical layer techniques based on OFDM-NOMA and Wavelet OFDM (WOFDM) -NOMA for tactile internet and investigates their performance in the presence of Gaussian and non-Gaussian channels. Overlap frequency domain equalization (OFDE) is proposed as a robust equalization technique to improve the performance of SIC in the presence of Gaussian and non-Gaussian channels for OFDM-NOMA and WOFDM-NOMA. Moreover, to enhance the equalization efficiency of the OFDE, linear precoding (LP) in the form of Walsh Hadamard transform (WHT) is also recommended for OFDM and WOFDM based NOMA transceivers which improves the reliability of the network. Performance of the proposed precoded OFDM-NOMA and precoded WOFDM-NOMA with OFDE is analyzed in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and impulse noise for Rayleigh fading channel. Link level performance of the presented structures for downlink NOMA is evaluated in terms of bit error rate (BER), PAPR, SE and computational complexity (CC). Furthermore, performance of the proposed architectures is also compared in the presence of impulse noise having different intensities.
