The temperature range of silicon components may be substantially extended by using SOI devices. In this paper, we propose a new physical definition of the usual parameters appearing in the empirical models used for expressing the surface mobility. We also present a thorough experimental study of the mobility in thin film SOI MOSFET's, in the temperature range 298-623K. All data agree with the theoretical model, which may thus be used for a physical interpretation of the results from room to high temperature.

predictive models for generating side information in differential encoding of data (e.g., images) sampled at high densities are considered. A model based on incremental difference operators is used in place of the conventional linear predictive coding (LPC) paradigm. It is seen that, unlike standard LPC, this formulation is stable for high sampling densities. Moreover, this formulation leads to more efficiently encoded side information in this regime.

A high performance IPC (Inter-Processor Communication) controller for the multiprocessors of an ATM switching system is proposed in this paper. This IPC controller accommodates the ATM cell assembly and reassembly functions and allows high-speed interprocessor data transfer via ATM switch. The IPC controller structure consists of the segmentation part and the reassembly part for processing AAL type 5. The IPC protocol is implemented sliding window method. The real message ratio and the LPC controller performance is computed according to user packet size. The real message ratio is increased as the user packet size increases because of header overhead. And the maximum real message ratio is about 0.8 in maximum user packet size 496 bytes. The throughput is optimal at packet size 80.

We consider the lossless compression of high fidelity (e.g. 16-bit) digital audio using adaptive linear prediction. Both linear predictive coding (LPC) and least mean squares (LMS) predictors are considered. Preliminary results are presented for the compression of industry standard Sound Quality Assessment Material (SQAM) samples from 16 bits to 1.5-3 bits. Previous results by others on the same audio source was in the 8-bit range.

This paper describes a dual rate 8kb/s / I6kb/s low delq CELP speech coder with a 5ms frame length. Our studies have focused on the design of a classified structure based on both a long term (voiced / unvoiced) and a short term segmentation of the speech signal. This classifcation enables to combine a backward and forward LPC structure in a same codec. The bit allocation can then be better optimized according to the characteristics of rhe input signal and the desired bit rate. Results of formal tests are presented and show that the quality is equivalent to the G729 ITV-T codec at 8kb/s (preliminary version of October 94) and outperforms significantly G728 at 16kb/s.

We present spectral excitation coding (SEC), a speech codec based on a sinusoidal model applied to the excitation signal. A phase dispersion algorithm allows the same model to be used for voiced as well as unvoiced and transitional sounds. The phase dispersion algorithm significantly improves the perceived quality resulting in more natural reconstructed speech. A new technique for variable dimension vector quantization called nonsquare transform vector quantization (NSTVQ) is used for quantization of the harmonic magnitudes. The SEC system at 2.45 kb/s achieved an MOS score 0.8 points higher than the 2.4 kb/s ZPC-10 standard. A preliminary 1.85 kb/s SEC system which uses zero-bit magnitude quantization is also presented. Informal listening tests indicate that the quality of the 1.85 kb/s system exceeds that of the LPC-10 standard.
