A Priori model reduction and error checking in large-scale linear programming applications

Model reductions in large-scale linear programming models can be accomplished by carefully analysing the domain of definition of both the variables and constraints in a mathematical model description. Significant savings in terms of the model size can be obtained. Using the GAMS modelling language for a group of constraints in an oil refinery production model, several domain reductions are illustrated. Error checking in large-scale models can be accomplished by letting the modelling system check for symbolic mistakes and data *** error checking requires the belief that any kind of mistake imaginable will in fact be made. Experiments with data and set modifications in an oil refinery production model have indicated not only that mistakes are made, but also that most can be caught. Several error checking statements concerning the process input-output table of the refinery model are provided as typical illustrations of error detection in large-scale linear programming models. This approach to preventing errors complements existing methods for computer-assisted analysis of large-scale linear programming models. © 1987 Oxford University Press.

Implementing a blending optimization model for short-range production planning of cement quarry operation

An application of the linear programming based blending optimization model for short-range production planning of the cement raw materials is presented. The benefits of the model are established through a case study of an existing cement manufacturing operation in the northern part of Pakistan. A successful model implementation has ensured significant cost savings, reduced employee time for preparing schedules, a sustained supply of raw materials, and better coordination and engineering control among various divisions of the operation as compared to schedules produced manually.

Improving envelopment in data envelopment analysis

Data envelopment analysis defines the relative efficiency of a decision making unit (DMU) as the ratio of the sum of its weighted outputs to the sum of its weighted inputs allowing the DMUs to freely allocate weights to their inputs/outputs. However, this measure may not reflect a DMU's true efficiency as some inputs/outputs may not contribute reasonably to the efficiency measure. Traditionally, to overcome this problem weights restrictions have been imposed. This paper offers a new approach to this problem where DMUs operate a constant returns to scale technology in a single input multi-output context. The approach is based on introducing unobserved DMUs, created by adjusting the output levels of certain observed relatively efficient DMUs, reflecting a combination of technical information of feasible production levels and the DM's value judgments. Its main advantage is that the information conveyed by the DM is local, with reference to a specific observed DMU. The approach is illustrated on a real life application. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. While revenue management (RM) is traditionally considered a tool of service operations, RM shows considerable potential for application in manufacturing operations. The typical challenges in make-to-order manufacturing are fixed manufacturing capacities and a great variety in offered products, going along with pronounced fluctuations in demand and profitability. Since Harris and Pinder in the mid-90s, numerous papers have furthered the understanding of RM theory in this environment. Nevertheless, results to be expected from applying the developed methods to a practical industry setting have yet to be reported. To this end, this paper investigates a possible application of RM at ThyssenKrupp VDM, leading to considerable improvements in several areas. © 2010, The Author(s).

Traditional approaches to efficiency analysis have focused on similar firms that use the same technology. However, firms in various applications operate with different technologies, adapting to different production environments. In this paper, we propose aggregate production framework for measuring the efficiency of firms having different technologies. We introduce the concept of aggregate production sets that describe all possible activities in the economy and show how to use it for evaluating efficiency scores. Then, we specify two aggregate production models, which provide upper and lower bounds on efficiency scores. For use in practice, we incorporate Data Envelopment Analysis into our framework. This enables to implement our framework through linear programming.

A decision model is formulated for the planning of pro- duction for a large centrally managed governmental agency with multi-production facilities. The concepts of linear economics and mathematical programming are utilized to develop the model as a single-period planning tool for the efficient allocation of resources and production effort. It is assumed that the governmental agency desires to optimize the conversion of its input resources to outputs for all its production facilities. Under this assumption, the two separate problems of effectiveness maximization and cost minimization for the agency as a whole are considered. The questions of data collection, parameter estimation, and management utilization of the model are also addressed. A specific formulation of the model is presented for the decision problem of the maintenance and overhaul of the major end items of equipment within the logistical system of the Marine Corps.
