In India and other developing countries, irrigation has received particular attention for stimulating economic growth. Increase in agricultural productivity through better inputs is considered the key to economic development and self sufficiency. Considering the cost increases incurred by the state-run electricity utilities in rural electrification and the uncertainties pertaining to the supply and the price of liquid hydrocarbon fuels, it becomes imperative to identify other options for irrigation water pumping. Much work has been done in recent years in India and elsewhere on the use of alternative technologies for this purpose, and the present work attempts to develop a linear (mixed integer) model for determining the cost-effective technology options at the micro level. The energy required for irrigation is estimated. This is followed by a mathematical description of the developed model. The authors also discuss the technoeconomics of different energy resource and technology options for the irrigation sector. The technologies include solar photovoltaics, water pumping windmills, gasifier and biogas plants coupled to diesel engines operating in the dual-fuel mode, electric pumpsets, and diesel pumps in the independent mode. The developed model is solved for typical conditions that exist in India, and it is shown that there are conditions in which alternative energy technologies make economic sense.

Scenarios are a useful tool to study the effects of changes in the socio-economic and/or biophysical environment on agricultural land use. For the analysis of these scenarios an operational methodology, denominated USTED, has been developed. The methodology is based on a linear programming model in combination with GIS, crop growth simulation models, and expert systems. The data requirements include quantitative descriptions of land use systems and technologies, attribute data on e.g. prices and chemical compositions, and georeferenced data on farms and soils. Sustainability is incorporated in the methodology by a limited number of quantified sustainability parameters. The linear programming model analyses, on the basis of different farm types, the effect of different scenarios on land use. Customized computer software (MODUS) operationalises the integration of the different models. The methodology is illustrated with a case study for the Neguev settlement in the Atlantic Zone of Costa Rica.

The problem of geometric programming subject to max-product fuzzy relation constraints with discrete variables is studied. The major difficulty in solving this problem comes from nonconvexity caused by these product terms in the general geometric function and the max-product relation constraints. We proposed a 0-1 mixed integer linear programming model and adopted the branch-and-bound scheme to solve the problem. Numerical experiments confirm that the proposed solution method is effective.

User Utility Oriented Queuing Model for Resource Allocation in Cloud Environment

Resource allocation is one of the most important research topics in servers. In the cloud environment, there are massive hardware resources of different kinds, and many kinds of services are usually run on virtual machines of the cloud server. In addition, cloud environment is commercialized, and economical factor should also be considered. In order to deal with commercialization and virtualization of cloud environment, we proposed a user utility oriented queuing model for task scheduling. Firstly, we modeled task scheduling in cloud environment as an M/M/1 queuing system. Secondly, we classified the utility into time utility and cost utility and built a linear programming model to maximize total utility for both of them. Finally, we proposed a utility oriented algorithm to maximize the total utility. Massive experiments validate the effectiveness of our proposed model.

In this paper, we address the maximization of the protected demand of a set of commodities that must be routed on a given capacitated network. We define the protected demand of a given routing solution as the demand that is protected, on average, when a single link fails. We consider that the protection paths might be partial link disjoint. The aim is to find a routing solution, which includes the decision on whose commodities are to be protected, that maximizes the total protected demand. We propose integer linear programming models considering three types of path protection: 1+1, 1:1 and 1:1 with preemption. We present computational results showing that the use of partial disjoint protection paths enables to protect more demand for the same network resources on all three types of protection.

Text simplification aims to rewrite text into simpler versions, and thus make information accessible to a broader audience. Most previous work simplifies sentences using hand-crafted rules aimed at splitting long sentences, or substitutes difficult words using a predefined dictionary. This paper presents a data-driven model based on quasi-synchronous grammar, a formalism that can naturally capture structural mismatches and complex rewrite operations. We describe how such a grammar can be induced from Wikipedia and propose an integer linear programming model for selecting the most appropriate simplification from the space of possible rewrites generated by the grammar. We show experimentally that our method creates simplifications that significantly reduce the reading difficulty of the input, while maintaining grammaticality and preserving its meaning.

This paper focus on the routing, modulation level and spectrum allocation (RMLSA) problem in the next generation datacentre networks, which own the advantages of both Elastic Optical Networks (EON) and Software Defined Networking (SDN). We proposes an Integer linear programming (ILP) model for this problem. Simulation results show the ILP model achieves an outstanding load balancing performance.

Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) represent one of the most promising approaches for improving the quality of life, allowing remote patient monitoring and other healthcare applications. In such networks, traffic routing plays an important role together with the positioning of relay nodes, which collect the information from biosensors and send it towards the sinks. This work investigates the optimal design of wireless body area networks by studying the joint data routing and relay positioning problem in a WBAN, in order to increase the network lifetime. To this end, we propose an integer linear programming model which optimizes the number and location of relays to be deployed and the data routing towards the sinks, minimizing both the network installation cost and the energy consumed by wireless sensors and relays. We solve the proposed model in realistic WBAN scenarios, and discuss the effect of different parameters on the characteristics of the planned networks. Numerical results demonstrate that our model can design energy-efficient and cost-effective wireless body area networks in a very short computing time, thus representing an interesting framework for the WBAN planning problem.

For the study of the complex interconnections in an IoT-driven world, an engineering case was developed to teach engineering students the interrelations and requirements for a robust, controlled and secured system incorporating all challenges of the modern IoT-system. As a case the charging problem for electric batteries (as for electric cars) was explored, both from the client (user at the loadstation) side as from the delivery side (service provider).
