In this paper, the uncertainty of the demand in newsvendor problems is characterized by interval probabilities. The characteristics of interval probabilities, the method for estimating interval probabilities from subject and decision criteria with interval probabilities are addressed. The newsvendor models under interval probabilities are proposed for obtaining the optimal order quantity.

In this work a new method for surface reconstruction from an initial triangular mesh is introduced. The method transforms the mesh to a quadrilateral one and then builds a smooth surface on top of it. The present approach is efficient for large collections of triangular patches including difficult situations such as sharp junctions and n-patch vertices. During the reconstruction process the number of mesh elements is considerably reduced. The possibility of parallel computation mate a method efficient in practice. The method is illustrated by building several free form surfaces from a triangular mesh.

In many real-life situations, we come across problems with imprecise input values. Imprecisions are dealt with by various ways. One of them is interval based approach in which we model imprecise quantities by intervals, and suppose that the quantities may vary independently and simultaneously within their intervals. In most optimization problems, they are formulated using imprecise parameters. Such parameters can be considered as fuzzy intervals, and the optimization tasks with interval cost function are obtained. When realistic problems are formulated, a set of intervals may appear as coefficients in the objective function or the constraints of a linear programming problem. In this paper, we introduce a new method for solving linear optimization problems with interval parameters in the objective function and the inequality constraints, and we show the efficiency of the proposed method by presenting a numerical example.

Data envelopment analysis-an application to turmeric production in North Western Region of Tamil Nadu

The main objective of this research is to identify and analyze the sources of technical inefficiency in turmeric crop farming system in north western region of Tamil Nadu from a sample of 180 turmeric growing farmers. A non-parametric approach, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) has been used to estimate Technical Efficiency Scores (TES). Results indicate the presence of technical inefficiency in turmeric farming system. The average technical efficiency score is 79 per cent with the maximum score of 95 per cent and minimum score of 59 per cent. The potential to increase the technical efficiency score of turmeric growing farms is found to be 17 per cent.

Using the results related to dynamically equivalent realizations of reaction kinetic systems, we analyze the dynamical properties of mass action reaction networks on which the well known structure based theorems of reaction kinetics are not directly applicable with respect to given range of certain rate coefficients. We introduce a transformation matrix to describe parametric changes, and show that if the appropriate transformation matrix has been found, parameter ranges for which certain dynamical properties can be ensured may be determined via the solution of a linear programming problem. The method is illustrated by numerical examples.

A special nonlinear bilevel programming problem (BLPP), whose follower-level problem is a convex programming with a linear objective function in y, is transformed into an equivalent single-level programming by using Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (K-K-T) conditions. To solve the equivalent problem effectively, a new genetic algorithm is proposed. First, a linear programming (LP) is constructed to decrease the dimensions of the transformed problem. Then based on a constraint-handling scheme, a second-phase evolving process is designed for some offspring of crossover and mutation, in which the linear property of follower's function is used to generate high quality potential offspring.

This paper deals with a repetitive control problem for the cases where the period of periodic disturbances to be rejected is uncertain but is within known lower and upper bound. A new adaptive repetitive control system with on-line estimation of the period is proposed not only to guarantee stability of the overall system but also both to reject any periodic disturbances with the uncertain period and to reduce sensitivity against any disturbances, for example, non-periodic persistent ones. The design problem is reduced to a simple and feasible l(1) norm minimization problem. The controller can be obtained easily by solving a simple linear programming problem. Simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed controller for rejection of periodic disturbances and sensitivity reduction.

In a distributed storage system, the storage costs of different storage nodes, in general, can be different. How to store a file in a given set of storage nodes so as to minimize the total storage cost is investigated. By analyzing the min-cut constraints of the information flow graph, the feasible region of the storage capacities of the nodes can be determined. The storage cost minimization can then be reduced to a linear programming problem, which can be readily solved. Moreover, the tradeoff between storage cost and repair-bandwidth is established.

A Fuzzy Data Envelopment Analysis (FDEA) is a popular technique to measure the relative efficiency of a Decision Making Unit (DMU) with respect to other DMUs under uncertain/imprecise information represented in form of fuzzy input and fuzzy output. However, in a real life application, due to higher order of uncertainty, the fuzzy set may not be a suitable choice, as the membership value alone cannot represent the input/output information precisely. Therefore in the paper, we extend the FDEA model to Intuitionistic Fuzzy Data Envelopment Analysis (IFDEA) model, namely, Parabolic Intuitionistic Fuzzy based Data Envelopment Analysis, where the input and output are demonstrated by Parabolic Intuitionistic Fuzzy Numbers (PIENs). Further the alpha-cut and beta-cut approach are used to convert the parabolic intuitionistic fuzzy inputs and outputs into their corresponding intervals and to compute the parametric efficiencies of the given DMUs. Additionally, we have used the section formula to defuzzify the parabolic intuitionistic fuzzy numbers into their crisp form to execute the optimization problem. Finally, the cross-efficiency technique is used to rank the DMUs.

This report introduces two approaches to the efficient portfolio selection problem, wherein the criteria and the constraints are linear with respect to control variables. The first approach consists of unconditioned optimization of the average expected efficiency value of a portfolio without imposing any additional constraints on the structure of selected portfolio. For this scheme the problem of effective portfolio formation is reduced to two linear programming problems, solving these for an efficient frontier may be effectively accomplished in closed form. The second scheme considers an additional set of group constraints, which can also be reduced to the problem of finding the Pareto fronts of two linear programming problems.
