Multi-agent search for a moving and camouflaging target

In multi-agent search planning for a randomly moving and camouflaging target, we examine heterogeneous searchers that differ in terms of their endurance level, travel speed, and detection ability. This leads to a convex mixed-integer nonlinear program, which we reformulate using three linearization techniques. We develop preprocessing steps, outer approximations via lazy constraints, and bundle-based cutting plane methods to address large-scale instances. Further specializations emerge when the target moves according to a Markov chain. We carry out an extensive numerical study to show the computational efficiency of our methods and to derive insights regarding which approach should be favored for which type of problem instance.

A two-time-level model for mission and flight planning of an inhomogeneous fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles

We consider the mission and flight planning problem for an inhomogeneous fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Therein, the mission planning problem of assigning targets to a fleet of UAVs and the flight planning problem of finding optimal flight trajectories between a given set of waypoints are combined into one model and solved simultaneously. Thus, trajectories of an inhomogeneous fleet of UAVs have to be specified such that the sum of waypoint-related scores is maximized, considering technical and environmental constraints. Several aspects of an existing basic model are expanded to achieve a more detailed solution. A two-level time grid approach is presented to smooth the computed trajectories. The three-dimensional mission area can contain convex-shaped restricted airspaces and convex subareas where wind affects the flight trajectories. Furthermore, the flight dynamics are related to the mass change, due to fuel consumption, and the operating range of every UAV is altitude-dependent. A class of benchmark instances for collision avoidance is adapted and expanded to fit our model and we prove an upper bound on its objective value. Finally, the presented features and results are tested and discussed on several test instances using GUROBI as a state-of-the-art numerical solver.

A comparative assessment of linearization methods for bilinear models

In this article, optimization problems with bilinear constraints involving one discrete variable are studied. Several industrial problems present bilinear non-convex constraints which are difficult to solve to global optimality. For this purpose models must be reformulated what in general terms increases the problem size. This article proposes two disjunctive transformation techniques which are compared to other approaches presented in the literature. An analysis is made comparing qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the methods employed. In order to implement proposed transformations, three industrial cases are studied: trim-loss in a paper mill, cutting stock in the production of carton board boxes and the purchase, inventory and delivery optimization problem. All of them are reformulated and solved using the strategies included in the paper. Several instances of each problem are evaluated and their results are analyzed comparing performance of the different methods. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Exact Solutions of the Nonlinear Fin Problem with Temperature-dependent Coefficients

The analytical solutions of a nonlinear fin problem with variable thermal conductivity and heat transfer coefficients are investigated by considering theory of Lie groups and its relations with lambda-symmetries and Prelle-Singer procedure. Additionally, the classification problem with respect to different choices of thermal conductivity and heat transfer coefficient functions is carried out. In addition, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian forms related to the problem are investigated. Furthermore, the exact analytical solutions of boundary-value problems for the nonlinear fin equation are obtained and represented graphically. (C) 2020 The Authors. Published by Atlantis Press B.V.

Power system equipment outages are one of the most important factors affecting the reliability and economy of power *** is crucial to consider the reliability of the planning *** this paper,a generation expansion planning(GEP)model is proposed,in which the candidate generating units and energy storage systems(ESSs)are simultaneously planned by minimizing the cost incurred on investment,operation,reserve,and *** reliability cost is computed by multiplying the value of lost load(VOLL)with the expected energy not supplied(EENS),and this model makes a compromise between economy and *** the computation of EENS makes the major computation impediment of the entire model,a new efficient linear EENS formulation is proposed and applied in a multi-step GEP *** doing so,the computation efficiency is significantly improved,and the solution accuracy is still *** proposed GEP model is illustrated using the IEEE-RTS system to validate the effectiveness and superiority of the new model.

A recently developed numerical method, multidomain quasilinearization, is applied on a steady laminar, natural convection boundary layer flow of MHD viscous and incompressible fluid from a vertical permeable flat plate with uniform temperature in this paper. Nondimensionless variables are used to transform the governing equations to a system of nondimensional nonlinear partial differential equations. Then the resulting equations are solved numerically by using multidomain quasilinearization method. The numerical results for tangential velocity, transverse velocity, and temperature, skin friction are calculated and shown in various tables and graphs. © 2019 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Control Design for Nonlinear Systems via Controller with Quasi-fixed Parameters

The paper presents an approach to design a control of nonlinear dynamical systems based on the extended linearization technique of a mathematical model of an object such that a given quadratic cost function is minimized. In this case, the coefficients of the nonlinear controller are determined by solving Riccati matrix equation with state dependent parameters. A realizability problem of the controller of this sort is computational complexity of the realtime solution. The proposed approach solves the problem by controller coefficients searching at each control time subinterval of the whole control time interval. The presented methodology is illustrated by designing chemotherapy administration for the cancer treatment. The mathematical model of the cancer growth includes interaction between tumor cells, healthy normal cells and activated immune cells. Numerical results show effectiveness of the solutions obtained. © 2018

Rough linearization By One-Dimensional Rough Paths

In this paper, we propose a linearization method of nonlinear control systems by using rough path analysis. The linearization is achieved by the addition of rough signals, which are designed by functions with unbounded variations such as a sinusoidal wave having infinitely-large frequency Therefore, the proposed method is considered to be an extension of the analysis of Lie bracket motions such as the approximation algorithms by Liu and Sussmann in 1990’s, or, the transverse function approach by Morin et al. in 2000’s. Note, however, that, the characteristic feature of the method is to derive controllable linear approximate models for nonholonomic systems even if no Lie bracket motion is generated. Instead, another motions appear based on the similar effects of Wong-Zakai correction terms in stochastic analysis, provided that any stochastic signals are never dealt with in this paper. The validity of the method is confirmed by a few simple examples of linearization problems for nonlinear control systems. © 2018

On the Fractional Variable Order Cucker–Smale Type Model

In the paper the Cucker-Smale type models with a fractional variable order operator are considered. The asymptotic stability of a class of linear fractional variable order discrete-time systems is used to study a consensus in the nonlinear fractional variable order discrete-time systems. Basing on a linearization method of the considered multi-agent system we give the sufficient conditions that guarantee the consensus. Finally, an example illustrates our results. © 2018

Nonlinear Control for Semi-active Suspension with Input Constraints

A nonlinear controller design method based on quarter-car model of semi-active suspension is proposed for input constraints problem. Taking the system nonlinear characteristics and input constraints into account sufficiently, an auxiliary system is introduced to combine backstepping method to cut down vibration of semi-active suspension. In the design process, we use a Nussbaum function to compensate for the nonlinear term arising from the input constraints. Due to the absence of any linearization method, the control input is limited to a certain range while maintaining the nonlinear characteristics of the system. The simulation results show that the suspension system can move toward stability quickly in the condition of input saturation, and can effectively improve the ride quality of the vehicle. © 2018
