With the increasing popularity of smart devices and the rapid development of Internet of things technology, more and more devices need to be connected to Internet to provide better service for users. How to connect smart devices to cloud platform and get better cloud service is an important problem. Problems existing in the existing platform, such as connecting devices process complex and constrained cloud services. This paper presents a connecting framework of smart devices based on linux container technology, each of these smart devices corresponds to a Docker container in the cloud, the services required by smart devices are packaged in the corresponding Docker image, Developers can define the required services and ignore whether or not be supported by the platform. Smart devices can be connected to this platform by implementing a rest-based web service.

Android OS has found its usage, not only in smartphones and other areas of smart devices, but also in automotive and many other industries, as its applications grow more and more over time. Even though Android OS is based on a linux kernel, some problems arise while trying to execute Android applications on other linux kernel-based operating systems. Execution of Android applications on an Android emulator was an acceptable solution until their growing complexity demanded more hardware resources. On the other hand, linux containers were developed and became more popular. Hence, executing Android applications natively on other linux operating systems became possible on systems with limited hardware resources. Nevertheless, minimum system requirements for this solution are not clearly defined, but could be very useful in the planning phase, when choosing a target platform for a specific project. In this paper, minimum requirements for system resources for executing Android applications in linux containers have been assessed, and its advantages compared to executing them on an Android emulator have been described.

In recent years, the development of the Internet of Things (IoT) has largely been supported by the parallel development of the Cloud computing capacities. Cloud computing offered elastic and on-demand computing power able to host and support crucial IoT functions. However, the proliferation of connected objects poses the problem of the confidentiality of the data produced. This proliferation also threatens the performances of the supporting networks. To tackle those problems, the research community has recently turned to Fog Computing. In this paper, we present Cloud4IoT, a platform able to perform horizontal (roaming) and vertical (offloading) migration of IoT functions. We implement our demonstration using a Kubernetes cluster organised in three tiers: Cloud, Edge and IoT gateways. Our first use cases shows how IoT function roaming can be used in the context of health care data exploitation. The second use case exploits the IoT offloading capacity of our platform to optimize the remote diagnostic of mechanical engines.

Nowadays, more and more enterprises and research institutes choose to build mini-datacenters and deploy private cloud environments to meet growing business and research needs. To make users can run different application frameworks on the same datacenter, Cao et al. [5] proposed a new service model named ClaaS (Cluster as a Service) and developed a lightweight prototype system named Docklet which is based on LXC (linux container). Docklet faces a problem of resources waste and abuse due to our free policy. This paper introduces the monitoring and billing modules of Docklet in order to solve this problem. Monitoring module provides users and administrators with a clear, real-time and detailed monitoring interface to understand the statues of running applications and the usage of physical resources. Billing module uses these data to remind users to release unnecessary resources. An experiment and observations show that our proposed monitoring method is effective and lightweight and our proposed billing model increases the utilization of physical resources of a mini-datacenter.

Realistic and scalable testing systems are critical to evaluate network applications and protocols to ensure successful real system deployments. container-based network emulation is attractive because of the combination of many desired features of network simulators and physical testbeds . The success of Mininet, a popular softwaredefined networking (SDN) emulation testbed, demonstrates the value of such approach that we can execute unmodified binary code on a largescale emulated network with lightweight OS-level virtualization techniques. However, an ordinary network emulator uses the system clock across all the containers even if a container is not being scheduled to run. This leads to the issue of temporal fidelity, especially with high workloads. Virtual time sheds the light on the issue of preserving temporal fidelity for large-scale emulation. The key insight is to trade time with system resources via precisely scaling the time of interactions between containers and physical devices by a factor of n, hence, making an emulated network appear to be n times faster from the viewpoints of applications in the container. In this paper, we develop a lightweight linux-container-based virtual time system and integrate the system to Mininet for fidelity and scalability enhancement. We also design an adaptive time dilation scheduling module for balancing speed and accuracy. Experimental results demonstrate that (1) with virtual time, Mininet is able to accurately emulate a network n times larger in scale, where n is the scaling factor, with the system behaviors closely match data obtained from a physical testbed;and (2) with the adaptive time dilation scheduling, we reduce the running time by 46% with little accuracy loss. Finally, we present a case study using the virtual-time-enabled Mininet to evaluate the limitations of equal-cost multi-path (ECMP) routing in a data center network. © 2015 ACM.

This paper presents a novel approach to the study of multi-technological networks based on linux containers and software emulators. We illustrate the architecture and implementation issues of a modular and flexible testbed (NetBoxIT) that supports the virtualization and the concurrent, real-time execution of several independent emulators on a single, multi-core hardware platform. Distinct virtual networks can be instantiated, and connected to synthesize heterogeneous networks configurations. NetBoxIT is also an open platform, which can be interfaced with external networks and nodes, enabling the evaluation of true users' applications and protocols. We examine its performance under different viewpoints (scalability, computational load, timing overheads, and realism) and we show how the proposed testbed architecture leads to a general-purpose, reliable, and economical tool for assessing multipart networks with respect to real-world applications. Moreover, we discuss which are the current and future technologies that can be introduced to reduce the testbed timing overheads and to further improve performance. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. In this work, we present a novel approach that leverages linux containers to achieve High Availability (HA) for cloud applications. A middleware that is comprised of a set of HA agents is defined to compensate the limitations of linux containers in achieving HA. In our approach we start modeling at the application level, considering the dependencies among application components. We generate the proper scheduling scheme and then deploy the application across containers in the cloud. For each container that hosts critical component(s), we continuously monitor its status and checkpoint its full state, and then react to its failure by restarting locally or failing over to another host where we resume the computing from the most recent state. By using this strategy, all components hosted in a container are preserved without intrusively imposing modification on the application side. Finally, the feasibility of our approach is verified by building a proof-of-concept prototype and a case study of a video streaming application.

TZ-container: protecting container from untrusted OS with ARM TrustZone

containers are widely deployed on cloud platforms because of their low resource footprint, fast start-up time, and high performance, especially compared with their counterpart virtual machines. However,the Achilles' heel of container technology is its weak isolation. For an attacker, jailbreaking into a host OS from a container is easier than attacking a hypervisor from a virtual machine, because of its notably larger attack surface and larger trusted computing base(TCB). Researchers have proposed various solutions to protect applications from untrusted OS; yet, few of them focus on protecting containers, especially those hosting multiple applications and shared by multiple users. In this paper, we first identify several new attacks that cannot be prevented using the existing solutions. Furthermore, we systematically analyze the security properties that should be maintained to defend against these attacks and protect a full-fledged container from a malicious host OS. We then present the TZ-container, a TrustZone-based secure container mechanism that can keep all these security properties. The TZ-container specifically leverages TrustZone to construct multiple isolated execution environments(IEEs). Each IEE has a memory space isolated from the underlying OS and any other processes. By interposing switching between the user and the kernel modes,IEEs enforce security checks on each system call according to its semantics. We have implemented TZcontainer on the Hikey development board ensuring that it can support running unmodified Docker images downloaded from existing repositories such as https://***/. The evaluation results demonstrate that the TZ-container has a performance overhead of approximately 5%.

Industrial automation is entering a new era of the Industrial Internet with enhanced computing, communication, and storage capabilities provided by cloud computing and field devices. The paradigm of automation systems is shifting from the ISA-95 pyramid to the two-layers architecture: industrial cloud and edge computing. Industrial software is also evolving under the new architecture in ways for which dedicated software applications are no longer suited. Service-based industrial cloud and edge applications provide maximum flexibility, interoperability, and efficiency by combining the IEC 61499 standard, microservice architecture, and container technology. This article provides orchestration methods and deployment procedures for the OT-IT hybrid industrial edge applications. The feasibility of the proposed approach is demonstrated by an industrial case study with accompanying performance analysis.
