operating system represents one of the most complex man-made systems. In this paper, we analyze linux operating system (LOS) as a complex network via modeling functions as nodes and function calls as edges. It is found that for the LOS network and modularized components within it, the out-degree follows an exponential distribution and the in degree follows a power-law distribution. For better understanding the underlying design principles of LOS, we explore the coupling correlations of components in LOS from aspects of topology and function. The result shows that the component for device drivers has a strong manifestation in topology while a weak manifestation in function. However, the component for process management shows the contrary phenomenon. Moreover, in an effort to investigate the impact of system failures on networks, we make a comparison between the networks traced from normal and failure status of LOS. This leads to a conclusion that the failure will change function calls which should be executed in normal status and introduce new function calls in the meanwhile. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. linux operating system (LOS) is a sophisticated man-made system and one of the most ubiquitous operating systems. However, there is little research on the structure and functionality evolution of LOS from the prospective of networks. In this paper, we investigate the evolution of the LOS network. 62 major releases of LOS ranging from versions 1.0 to 4.1 are modeled as directed networks in which functions are denoted by nodes and function calls are denoted by edges. It is found that the size of the LOS network grows almost linearly, while clustering coefficient monotonically decays. The degree distributions are almost the same: the out-degree follows an exponential distribution while both in-degree and undirected degree follow power-law distributions. We further explore the functionality evolution of the LOS network. It is observed that the evolution of functional modules is shown as a sequence of seven events (changes) succeeding each other, including continuing, growth, contraction, birth, splitting, death and merging events. By means of a statistical analysis of these events in the top 4 largest components (i.e., arch, drivers, fs and net), it is shown that continuing, growth and contraction events occupy more than 95% events. The structures and behaviors of modern software systems are more and more complicated, thus the modeling of the runtime software systems is difficult. In this paper, we model the runtime linux operating system (LOS) as a weighted network to investigate the execution process of LOS. The topologies of the weighted LOS network are analyzed and it is found that the weight distribution follows a power-law distribution. For better understanding the execution process of LOS, we explore the manifestations of LOS components. The result shows that the component of process management plays the key role in the execution process of LOS. Moreover, an assessment of the reliability of LOS is proposed by considering the execution status of LOS as a discrete time Markov chain. The reliabilities of 10 LOS versions ranging from versions 3.15 to 4.4 are compared and the result shows that the reliability declines. Our work may shed a light on the testing and monitoring processes of software systems.

In this paper, a related document monitoring strategies based on virtual file system (VFS) is studied. Then the common file search methods and string matching methods are summarized for the security inspection of the confidential computer running the linux operating system. The study of this paper has important engineering value for improving the effect of the confidential computer security management work in the future.

Nowadays, the energy issue has become a hot topic in many fields, therefore, the mobile electric energy efficiency detection system with considerable advantages in energy service is proposed. It can efficiently detect the state data and energy efficiency data of energy-using equipment, and analyze the data through an energy analysis model then a corresponding energy assessment report is generated. A mobile electric energy efficiency detection system based on linux QT is introduced in this paper, which provides a feasible idea for embedded energy efficiency monitoring. QT GUI library is used to develop the system interface, which can display and query the real-time data, events conveniently. After a series of tests, the system can detect the energy efficiency accurately.

It describes the new wireless order system based on linux system through the wireless network, terminal operating system, and terminal graphic display system-QT and database server. This article selected the wireless LAN way to achieve data transmission. Wireless LAN is of virtues of conveniently -connected-to network, reliable communication, low cost, flexibility, mobility and high throughout, and so on. In the design of terminal, we use MagicARM2410 as the development platform. In the design of server, we used the linux operating system of desktop version, and we established a MySQL database.

Applications of an embedded system have been expanded throughout the years. It is usually observed in the digital consumer market where cell phones are replaced by smart phones and internet tablets. More functionality is brought into one single purpose system for giving the enhanced services to the users. The linux Kernel based operating system is used in most of these electronic devices. The biggest protests about linux are the size and speed at which it boots. The users expect these devices to have fast boot up time and a small amount of memory. In multiple real-time systems, many linux versions are used that need a large level of accessibility and negligible downtime when updating systems. This results in advancing linux boot time and size optimization. The objective of this paper is to keep the researchers up to date about linux Optimization techniques. First of all, this paper survey the various boot time optimization techniques and size reduction techniques with respect to conventional linux system. It then implements the efficient size optimization technique for ARM based Raspberry Pi board. The findings reveal that the operating system image builds after size optimization technique is 25% lighter in size than original image and boot-up time diminishes by half.

TPF: a dynamic system thrashing protection facility

operating system designers attempt to keep high CPU utilization by maintaining an optimal multiprogramming level (MPL). Although running more processes makes it less likely to leave the CPU idle, too many processes adversely incur serious memory competition, and even introduce thrashing, which eventually lowers CPU utilization. A common practice to address the problem is to lower the MPL with the aid of process swapping out/in operations. This approach is expensive and is only used when the system begins serious thrashing. The objective of our study is to provide highly responsive and cost-effective thrashing protection by adaptively conducting priority page replacement in a timely manner. We have designed a dynamic system Thrashing Protection Facility (TPF) in the system kernel. Once TPF detects system thrashing, one of the active processes will be identified for protection. The identified process will have a short period of privilege in which it does not contribute its least recently used (LRU) pages for removal so that the process can quickly establish its working set, improving the CPU utilization. With the support of TPF, thrashing can be eliminated in its early stage by adaptive page replacement, so that process swapping will be avoided or delayed until it is truly necessary. We have implemented TPF in a current and representative linux kernel running on an Intel Pentium machine. Compared with the original linux page replacement, we show that TPF consistently and significantly reduces page faults and the execution time of each individual job in several groups of interacting SPEC CPU2000 programs. We also show that TPF introduces little additional overhead to program executions, and its implementation in linux (or Unix) systems is straightforward. Copyright (C) 2002 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

Undertaking modelling investigations for Computer-Aided Drug Design (CADD) requires a proper environment. In principle, this could be done on a single computer, but the reality of a drug discovery program requires robustness and high-throughput computing (HTC) to efficiently support the research. Therefore, a more capable alternative is needed but its implementation has no widespread solution. Here, the realization of such a computing facility is discussed, from general layout to technical details all aspects are covered.

Host-based misuse intrusion detection using PCA feature extraction and kNN classification algorithms

This paper presents the design and performance evaluation of a host-based misuse intrusion detection system for the linux operating system. The proposed system employs a feature extraction technique based on principal component analysis, which is called Eigentraces, of operating system call trace data, and k-nearest neighbor algorithm for classification. The design is evaluated on the ADFA-LD dataset which entails one normal and six attack classes. Feature vectors are formed from fixed-size system call trace raw data through windowing and the principal component analysis, and serve as templates for the training phase. Classification of system call trace data that is in the form of feature vectors which are formulated through the Eigentraces procedure is accomplished using the k-nearest-neighbor algorithm. Two variants of the misuse intrusion detection system designs were evaluated through a simulation study on the ADFA-LD dataset: one design considered only two classes, namely normal and attack classes while the second design considered seven classes, namely one normal and six attack classes. In both cases the proposed design demonstrated very high performance. In overall, the misuse intrusion detection system was able to detect the attacks and predict the type of the attacks.
