The computing cluster built at Bologna to provide the LHCb Collaboration with a powerful Monte Carlo production tool is presented. It is a performance oriented Beowulf-class cluster, made of rack mounted commodity components, designed to minimize operational support requirements and to provide full and continuous availability of the computing resources. In this paper we describe the architecture of the cluster, and discuss the technical solutions adopted for each specialized sub-system. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Characteristics of solid state drives in designing I/O scheduler

An efficient I/O scheduling scheme for solid state drives is presented. The proposed scheme fully exploits the characteristics of solid state drives: no data access overhead and asymmetric read and write performance. Through implementation on linux operating systems, it is shown that the proposed scheme significantly improves the performance of I/O subsystems for solid state drives.

Time Synchronization Between EtherCAT Network and External Processor

We employ an external processor to distribute the master computing load in the EtherCAT networked control system and develop a method for time synchronization between the linux on the external processor and EtherCAT network. The synchronization between the linux on the external processor and EtherCAT master is performed by using general-purpose input/output and shared memory, and the synchronization accuracy is significantly improved by compensating for the system time setting latency and general-purpose input detection latency in the EtherCAT master. The developed method is implemented as part of the master application without modifying the EtherCAT protocol or requiring an excessive computational load. By performing extensive experiments and analyzing the results, we demonstrate that the developed method achieves the synchronization error means less than 1 mu s with standard deviations less than 5 mu s between the external processor and EtherCAT network. This synchronization accuracy can be acceptable for various networked control applications based on linux.

Saint Louis University created a 24/7 remotely accessible "computer laboratory" where students receive full server administration privileges to use in developing their server, networking, security, and database administration skills using the linux operating system. The university's decision to outsource the computer lab to MDK was simple. The resulting partnership provided each student in a senior-level undergraduate Web Applications and Architectures course with a virtual linux server as well as full administrative rights.

Soft control of scanning probe microscope with high flexibility

Most commercial scanning probe microscopes have multiple embedded digital microprocessors and utilize complex software for system control, which is not easily obtained or modified by researchers wishing to perform novel and special applications. In this paper, we present a simple and flexible control solution that just depends on software running on a single-processor personal computer with real-time linux operating system to carry out all the control tasks including negative feedback, tip moving, data processing and user interface. In this way, we fully exploit the potential of a personal computer in calculating and programing, enabling us to manipulate the scanning probe as required without any special digital control circuits and related technical know-how. This solution has been successfully applied to a homemade ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscope and a multiprobe scanning tunneling microscope.

Disaggregation Method for an Aggregate Traffic Flow Management Model

A linear time-varying aggregate traffic flow model can be used to develop traffic flow management strategies using optimization algorithms. However, there are few methods available in the literature to translate these aggregate solutions into practical control actions involving individual aircraft. In this paper, a computationally efficient disaggregation algorithm is proposed by employing a series of linear program and mixed integer linear program methods, which converts an aggregate (flow-based) solution to a flight-specific control action. Numerical results generated by the optimization method and the disaggregation algorithm are presented and illustrated by applying them to generate traffic flow management schedules for a typical day in the U.S. National Airspace system.

Power-efficient real-time scheduling based on multi-granularity resource reservation for multimedia services

Recent advances in mobile technologies have led to improved quality of multimedia services (QoMS) in a variety of mobile devices. Because multimedia has become a major form of content consumption for mobile users, satisfying user expectation on QoMS in energy-restricted mobile devices is critical. This need has motivated us to develop an aggressive and conservative low-power work demand analysis with multi-granularity (lpWDA-MG-AGG/CON) algorithm, designed to minimise power consumption in mobile devices by utilising a dynamic voltage scaling technique while simultaneously ensuring QoMS based on a resource reservation scheme. In addition, the authors analytically showed the schedulability of the proposed scheme under the rate monotonic scheduling policy. For performance evaluation, the authors implemented the two lpWDA-MG algorithms and several existing algorithms in a linux operating system. Specifically, the authors measured power consumption with a power metre and determined that the proposed algorithms consume about 40% less dynamic power than the other existing algorithms. Moreover, the authors found that the proposed algorithms ensure acceptable QoMS.

Possibilities and ways of design, implementation and application of microcomputer based embedded SCADA and RFID systems implemented on linux platform are considered, proposed and described in the paper. It is proposed to use open source hardware and software microcomputer technologies for design and implementation of the systems. Major possibilities and advantages of implementation and application of such systems are described. One such practically designed and implemented system that performs data acquisition and appropriate control is presented and described. Technologies used to realize the system, as well as embedded application of such solution are described. The system hardware was implemented using open source microcomputer boards, RFID and other sensors, WiFi router and additional electronics. The system software was implemented using open source tools and programs and linux operating system. The system was realized using modular approach. It enables easy system expandability, simplifying maintenance and adapting of the system to user requirements and needs. Access to system monitoring and control is possible using web based user interface and command line interface. It is achieved balance between functionality and cost of the system. Main advantages of the system compared with standard SCADA and RFID systems are low cost of the system, optimization according to user requirements and needs and low consumption of electrical energy.
