With the development of embedded technology, we are supposed to further develop embedded monitoring system of low cost, which attracts much attention. This system, however, is not suitable for household application from the aspect of cost. In view of this, we designed an approach of realizing monitoring via capturing pictures and video stream with USB camera based on ARM9 platform. This approach has advantages of low cost and high performance, so it can be widely used for anti-theft alarm, video door bell, etc.

A scalable bandwidth guaranteed distributed continuous media file system using network attached autonomous disks

Repository for continous media data differs from that of the traditional text-based data both in storage space and streaming bandwidth requirements. The file systems used for continuous media streams need to support large volumes and high bandwidth. In this paper, we propose a novel scalable distributed continuous media file system built using autonomous disks. Autonomous disks are attached directly to the network and are able to perform lightweight processing. We discuss different ways to realize the autonomous disk, and describe a prototype implementation on linux platform using PC-based hardware. We present the basic requirements of the continuous media file system and present the design methodology and a prototype linux-based implementation of the distributed file system that supports the requirements. We present experimental results on the performance of the proposed file system prototyped using autonomous disks. We show that the performance of the file system scales linearly with the number of disks and the number of clients. The file system performs much superior to NFS running on the same hardware platform and can deliver higher raw disk bandwidth to the applications. We also present bandwidth and time sensitive read/write procedures for the file system and show that the file system can provide strict bandwidth guarantees for continuous media streams.

Ad Hoc Wireless Networking and Shared Computation for Autonomous Multirobot systems

A wireless ad hoc network is introduced that enables inter-robot communication and shared computation among multiple robots with PC/104-based single board computers running the real-time application interface patched linux operating system. Through the use of IEEE 802.11 ad hoc technology and User Datagram Protocol, each robot is able to exchange data without the need of a centralized router or wireless access point. The paper presents three key aspects of this novel architecture to include: 1) procedures to install the real-time application interface patched operating system and wireless ad hoc communication protocol on a multiple robot system;2) development of a Simulink (R) library to enable intercommunication among robots and provide the requisite software-hardware interfaces for the onboard sensor suite and actuator packages;3) methods to rapidly generate and deploy real-time executables using Mathwork's Real-Time Workshop (TM) to enable an autonomous robotic system. Experimental test results from the Spacecraft Robotics Laboratory at the Naval Postgraduate School are presented which demonstrate negligible network latencies and real-time distributed computing capability on the Autonomous Spacecraft Assembly Test Bed. A complete manual is also included to replicate the network and software infrastructures described in this work. Also, the developed Simulink (R) library can be requested from the authors.

Detection of ESD-Induced Soft Failures by Analyzing linux Kernel Function Calls

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) into a functioning system can cause temporary upsets - soft failures. Subtle soft failures can reduce the reliability of system and cannot be detected by conventional methods based on external equipment or operation system (OS) log. This paper presents a proof of concept for a novel methodology for detection of ESD-induced soft failures through analyzing kernel function trace recordings of the operation system. The method is based on recording linux kernel function calls during normal operation and after ESD stress injection. The recorded information is visualized in forms of graphical maps of function execution and system call distribution for each process to highlight ESD induced changes. The experimental data shows that soft failures manifest themselves as changes in the function maps and the call distribution within the observed processes. This novel method is capable of detecting subtle system upsets which are not observable for the user through standard I/O or attached equipment.

Software ageing process as an evolving dynamic system

Software ageing is correlated with available computing resources of the computer system. These available resources evolve with time, reflecting the developing mechanism of the ageing process. This study is the first to consider a degrading computer system as an evolving dynamic system. The authors proposed a non-linear dynamic model of software ageing, where the coefficients are estimated using a dynamic inversion method, and conduct controlled software experiments, where the experimental conditions are controlled to expedite ageing. The model can be used to forecast mutations of resource variables such as the buffer, cache and central processing unit usage, which have a direct impact on software performance. The stability of the model is assessed by the Jacobi matrix method, and the results show that, when part of a resource has become unallocable, the linux operating system can readjust the resources to keep the system's performance stable. This process repeats until some of the resources are exhausted, when the system will crash or hang. This study provides hints on the ageing mechanism of computer systems, which are rarely reported in the past.

linux bugs: Life cycle, resolution and architectural analysis

Efforts to improve application reliability can be irrelevant if the reliability of the underlying operating system on which the application resides is not seriously considered. An important first step in improving the reliability of an operating system is to gain insights into why and how the bugs originate, contributions of the different modules to the bugs, their distribution across severities, the different ways in which the bugs may be resolved and the impact of bug severities on their resolution times. To acquire this insight, we conducted an extensive analysis of the publicly available bug data on the linux kernel over a period of seven years. We also justify and explain the statistical bug occurrence trends observed from the data, using the architecture of the linux kernel as an anchor. The statistical analysis of the linux bug data suggests that the linux kernel may draw significant benefits from the continual reliability improvement efforts of its developers. These efforts, however, are disproportionately targeted towards popular configurations and hardware platforms, due to which the reliability of these configurations may be better than those that are not commonly used. Thus. a key finding of our study is that it may be prudent to restrict to using common configurations and platforms when using open source systems such as linux in applications with stringent reliability expectations. Finally, our study of the architectural properties of the bugs suggests that the dependence among the modules rather than the unreliabilities of the individual modules is the primary cause of the bugs and their impact on system reliability. Research on vehicle traveling data recorder is introduced in this paper, which takes S3C2410 (ARM920T) microprocessor as the core and takes linux as the operating system. The proposed vehicle traveling data recorder can implement the real-time data acquisition and storage, and the information can be displayed and the audio alert can be sounded through a human-machine interface. The software design of this paper put emphasis on the storage of data, especially the accident and fault data. The proposed system can efficiently collect the status data related to the security performance of the automobile and integrate them, which can implement a real-time monitoring and diagnosing for the vehicle safety state. This system has a good prospect in the field of automotive electronics.

A new method, based on the Radio Frequency Identification Technology, has been proposed to get the vehicle running state parameters in this paper. Vehicle traveling data recorder (which is also called automobile block box) can accurately record the state parameters of the automotive traveling process, which can offer a real, effective and scientific legal basis for the analysis of traffic accidents. The data stored in the traditional vehicle traveling data recorder can only be read after parking, so the traffic law enforcement departments can't keep abreast of whether the driver has speeding and other violation behaviors on a section of highway. This system adds a radio frequency identification module on the base of the traditional vehicle traveling data recorder, which achieves non-stopping to get the vehicle's running parameters on some section of highway. It helps the law enforcement travel department monitor the vehicle's running status, which can more effectively curb speeding and other violations. This system has a good prospect in the field of automotive electronics.
